OK Pathfinder RPG by Paizo, Pathfinder and Paizo fans, if you have been wondering about our project, Pirates of the Bronze Sky, wonder no further. This video tells you of our plans and better still, where you can get the Pirates of the Bronze Sky Playtest PDF. Enjoy!

By the way the link is at the Louis Porter Jr. Design Facebook page

Thank you. Downloaded and perusing now.

I'm intrigued. Watching the video now and eager to get to the download.

Hmmm. Didn't see the page where we're actually supposed to download the file. (May have missed it as I was listening to the video more than watching it.)

Funny. The link you're posting clearly says his page, the hyperlink text is clearly to his page, and yet for me it goes to my own homepage. Odd.

Okay, I just read the PDF... and WOW!

I already have 2-3 character ideas buzzing around my head! This seems like a perfect setting to use the Airships (D20) book I have sitting on my shelf (to this day one of my favorite and most coveted D20 supplement). Heh, oh wait, I see you have it listed on the OGL Listing.

Speaking of which... I KNEW this post caught my eye for a reason. I recognize the Pirates of the Bronze Sky and New Avalon from the Sky Sailor core class book. I was wondering why I couldn't find anything more about the setting in that book when I first purchased it. Now I know.

I'm curious about the skystones and how they influence how skyships work. I was working on a similar setting of a sky planet, but haven't gotten too far myself with it other than a few concept ideas and some races. Mister Porter Jr., if you would like any help with content for this setting, I'm more than willing to offer some.

BTW, I LOVE the analogies to the birth of a certain nation and it's struggles, as well as the analogies for a certain writer/diplomat/founder. Kudos!

Thanks for sharing, Louis!

Is there any way to get the link for people who neither have nor want a Facebook account?

HERE is the download of the alpha play test for Pirates of the Bronze Sky.

AND:

LINK to the Dungeon Magazine/Polyhedron issue that contains the Spelljammer: Shadow of the Spider Moon article, the Polyhedron cover of which apparently led to Louis working on PotBS...

- SotSM is awesome - fantastic Spelljammer goodness and absolutely mind glowingly beautiful artwork. Seriously good stuff.

Given that Drop Dead Studios latest Kickstarter is the airship heavy Skybourne things are looking good for steampunk and magi tech, planesfaring and all things sky ship.

Dark Archive

Thanks. I still own SotSM, I even used it twice for Pathfinder, first time during the Alpha and later in 2010. It would probably work far better these days.
I still don't get why publishers try to support Facebook by hiding information there.

I hate Facebook. Despise it and all it stands for.

But I also create websites for a living, and Facebook is, quite sadly but inevitably, the fastest- some would say only- way to reach thousands of people in one go. And their friends. And their friends' friends...

And Zuckerberg...

There's a difference between posting information also on Facebook and posting information solely on Facebook.

I have far, far better response on G+ than FB. I don't mind either, but I never share personal information on either, rather I promote products I create, develop and am seeking feedback on. In other words I use social media, but I don't use it socially.

On topic, about 4 months ago, I posted a deck plan for a Spelljammer-like ship, and Louis commented on my post, asking if anyone else would be interested in seeing a Spelljammer-ish conversion to Pathfinder. I think I got the first heads up that Louis was doing this concept.

We are looking into add the unique races for the setting with their start so you can play them if you like.

If you search Pirates of teh Bronze Sky at RPGNow you can find some more material that we produced for the setting.

Oh yes, we used the American Revolution as the basis for the setting. I am a big history fan and buff so there is a GREAT chance on anything I create for campaign settings usually has a historical connection.

I was under the impression that the genesis of PotBS was almost four years old at this stage - had been a sort of stop-start affair. Maybe it was one of Louis other concepts...

@Louis - when DID Chris Field write that play test stuff?

Oceanshieldwolf wrote:

Maybe so, I'm making no claim to first knowledge. Louis commentted on my FB page a few months back with the hint he was doing something, but was the first I heard anything about it.

I'm just as likely to be incorrect Michael. :)

You know what, I have those as well. The Tocarra and Kaylethon race pdfs. Unless there are more. Absolutely looking forward to anything you guys do with this setting.

Oh, and Louis, I do the teh thing all the time also. That, plus my laptop cannot keep up with my typing speed.

Written by Chris Field? The guy that created Black Tokyo and swarms of low quality and juvenile (and often rape focused) sexual content?

Uh... no thanks. Why you'd want to associate your company with that mess is beyond me.

Yes it is.

Last year he turned it back over to me. I have been so focused on Obsidian Apocalypse I placed this on the back burner. Now it is on the front burner.

Tocarra and Kaylethon were the first two races that we created for the setting. I wanted to do another one but I never really created anything that go me excited...YET...

I have work with Chris on dozens if projects and I found him to be professional and an innovative designer. While his personal product line is a little adult for my taste, he does pull off some VERY solid and creative gaming design. Here is a list of products he has done for LPJ Design over the years. Just look at the reviews and make your decision on his work and what other people thought.

You can always say no and just walk away. No one is forcing you to look at Pirates of the Bronze Sky, but I think you would be missing out on something interesting and different. I mean it is free, what is the REAL risk?

I'm making my decision based on what I think from having seen his work. It ranges from thinly veiled fetish and wish fulfillment in Otherverse (check out the "everyone bones" festival- that includes young teenagers) to reprehensible-for-shock with Black Tokyo (there are at least a dozen feats powered by or used for orgasming or raping people, and one that lets you stab people to death with your 10 foot long penis).

And plenty of rules flaws and trap options to boot, if you can even see them past the thick coating of filth.

The risk is wasted time and, if this becomes a commercial product, someone getting funding to clog up the industry with more of that. I browsed through the document in case I was wrong. It seems like a pretty stock points of light setting. And then I noticed a bonus feat called "Lovers in Every Port". It isn't defined anywhere, but I can sure as hell guess that it's more of Field's creepiness worming its way in.

So he caters to a wide audience. Maybe a little...odd, but there is obviously a market for it (just look at Japanese h**tai and it's popularity in the U.S.).

That feat is in the Sky Sailor pdf. It's no more risque than any feat associated with Calistria. Actually, its more tame than some of the official feats I've seen. I'd post the feat, but I can't see whether it's Open Game Content or not.

But as I stated this is owned and created by LPJ Design and NOT Otherverse, so that should not be an issue.

OK. Thank you for your opinion.

Ok so what you have told me is that you are not interested. OK thanks for your time, and I will get back to informing those who are actually interested.

You can post it, I don't think Chris will mind.

I'll hold on posting it unless Aratrok really wants to take a look at it.

As for other races in New Avalon, I'm sure tengu are located somewhere, right? For my sky-world campaign, I had an elven race based off of the elves from Allods Online. Basically, winged elves with magic/translucent butterfly-like wings. If you've never heard of Allods Online, it's basically a WoW-clone set on floating continents with Player/Guild run airships. One of the human factions seems heavily Russian-themed.

Are you spying on my computer right now?

.... LMAO

Did you call them Glimmerwing Elves? If so then you must be spying at MY computer...

Other races I had as playable(Paizo and Other published races) included:

Monkey Goblins,
Hadozee (flying-squirrel/apes)
Gathlain
Strix
Wyvaran (winged kobolds...sort of)

...

This thread made me want to watch Treasure Planet... So I did. Heh.

So I found the most recent write up for the Tocarra race while going through files on Pirates of the Bronze Sky. While It is still in draft development phase, I thought you might find it interesting. Feel free to make you comments in this thread.

Tocarra Racial Traits

The Tocarra have quite extensive sexual dimorphism between their two genders and this is reflected in different bonuses and penalties for each of their genders suited to their differing roles within the tribes. The following racial traits are shared by Tocarra of both genders.

Monstrous Humanoid. The Tocarra’s are similar to humanoids, but with gargoyle-like physical traits.

Normal Speed: A Tocarra’s base land speed is 30 ft.

Climber (Ex): Tocarra have powerful feet, which are almost a second pair of hands, but specialized for digging into and clinging to rock faces, aiding them in climbing and holding themselves in place. Tocarra receive a +4 racial bonus on Climb checks, and may always take 10 or 20 on a Climb check, even if danger or distractions would normally prevent them from doing so.

Strange Soul (Su) Tocarra beliefs along with their unnatural physiology, so different from that found in the top-side of the lands, makes them impossible to raise. Tocarra receive no benefit from resurrection or raise dead spells, and can only be returned to life by Wish, Miracle or a similar high-level effect.

Tocarra Male Racial Traits

Ability Score Modifiers: +2 Strength, +2 Dexterity, -2 Charisma. Male Tocarra are lean and powerfully built, with long muscles like coiled hemp rope.

Patagia (Ex): Male Tocarra have patagia, a membrane or fold of skin between the forelimbs and hind limbs on each side, rather than true wings, and while they can glide. They take no damage from falls (as if from feather fall). In addition, Male Tocarra can move up to 5 feet in any horizontal direction for every 1 foot you fall, at a speed of 60 feet per round. Male Tocarra cannot to actually gain height, merely coast in other directions as you fall. If subjected to a strong wind or any other effect that causes you to rise you can take advantage of it in order to increase the distance you can glide.

Stony Skin: Their dense, pebbly skin gives male Tocarra a +2 natural armor bonus to armor class.

Darkvision: Male Tocarra have darkvision, allowing them to see perfectly in the dark up to 60 feet.

Bone Spurs (Ex): Tocarra have vicious claws on their prehensile feet. Their bone spurs are a secondary natural attack form that inflicts 1d4 + ½ Strength modifier point of slashing damage.

Tocarra Female Racial Traits
Ability Score Modifiers: +2 Dexterity, +2 Wisdom, -2 Strength. Female Tocarra are noticeably smaller and weaker than the males, but stronger willed and more perceptive. This inherent wisdom helps them to guide the tribes.

Flight (Ex): Female Tocarra have full grown wings. This ability functions as the witch’s flight hex using the Female Tocarra’s Hit Dice as the witch level for the hex. Female Tocarra who already have the flight hex add two to their level when determining the duration of this ability.

Stony Skin: Female Tocarra have slightly softer hides than the males, and receive a +1 natural armor bonus to armor class.

Darkvision: Female Tocarra have darkvision, allowing them to see perfectly in the dark up to 30 feet.

It looks solid. Only thing with the females would be that they can only 'fly' if their wings aren't bound. I can see clever players saying, "Well, it doesn't say specifically that they NEED their wings to fly. It just says that they can fly using the same rules as the witch's flight hex."

Might want to add that caveat to the description.

Also, on that note, it might be simpler to use the 'gliding wings' racial trait like the tengu has for the male Tocarra, and the 'flight' racial trait for the female tocarra. Gliding wings is 3 RP, and Flight is 4 RP (for a Fly speed of 30ft, it's +2 RP for each additional 10 ft.). You can still call them Patagia and Flight, respectively.

EDIT: Why did I not notice before now that you had a "Skyships of Nova Avalon" PDF at DTRPG until today!? I must be blind...

We have keep that one very quiet since we didn't have a campaign setting.

I can't seem to figure out the link, and that dropbox link expired

Sorry, but the dropbox link was only for a limited time. Once we get feedback from people we will be doing an update to that file.

Well, I like it. I'm already trying to think of what one of my character's skyship will be like stat-wise.

Warhawk7 wrote:

That is something that I wanted to work on from the start, making cool custom made skyships. I think everyone wants a cool vehicle like Slave-One or the Millennium Falcon and I want to give them the ability to do that. If the ship exist in science fiction or fantasy genre, I want to find a way to create it in Pirates of the Bronze Sky. I mean come on, who does want to create a Shadow Battle Crab from Babylon 5 for their game?

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

Why create a shadow crab if you can have a White Star?

There must a be a hole in your mind, Louis. :p

White Star FTW... any day.

Awesome Design? check
Medium Cruiser Weaponry? check
Adaptive Armor? Check
Flies like a big fighter? check
Can outrun a Shadow Battle Crab AND jumpgate explosion? Quadruple Check

Grand Lodge

Was hoping to do the playtest as well, but all the links I've found have expired or don't exist.

EDIT: After watching the video, it seems I missed about by two days. =(

I want a ship that screams in your mind as it passes by you.

My response to that is...

*sigh* I love that series. Was so glad to get it all on DVD.

Louis, will the various airship-related gear and instruments from the Airships sourcebook be viable in this setting?

You mean from Skyships of Nova Avalon (PFRPG)?

By the way, here is the list of Races that we have planned for the Pirates of the Bronze Sky setting:

1. Azlati (nomads of living wind)
2. Drow
3. Dwarves
4. Elves
5. Gnomes
6. Halflings
7. Half Elves
8. Half Orcs
9. Humans
10. Kayletheons (prodigiously strong, four armed Rhinoceros humaniod mercenaries)
11. Tocarra (gargoyle like savages)

I didn't see non-combat navigational-type equipment, such as the orb compass or airspeed monitor.
