Limits to refluffing class abilities?

Pathfinder Society

I have a Ranger that I want to have the Witchguard archetype but she will not be acting as protector to a Witch. Instead, she travels with an Oracle that is her charge. Of course, in a house game, it would be easy enough to do this with the GM's approval however I'm uncertain whether or not this would be acceptable at a PFS table.

Any thoughts?

The archetype does not specifically mention withces in the mechanic part of it, instead it only speaks about "spellcaster". I think you're safe.

Even the Patron ability says that you can choose any patron so you not restricted to ones gained from witches you're actually guarding.

Sure the fluff kinda breaks down, but that doesn't really matter in PFS.

Well, the thing that gives me pause is that a Patron is a Witch class ability and the Ranger archetype specifically mentions learning arcane magic rather than divine. I'll be shorting myself out of some spells since an Oracle only gets Mystery spells at 2nd and 4th rather than every level 1-4 but I figure it's a fair trade off for not following the archetype to the letter.

You are going to have to choose a Witch Patron, as that's a mechanical change, rather than just a "refluff". However, the Defend Charge ability will work perfectly fine with the Oracle.

I'd just select a Witch Patron that's thematically similar to the Oracle's mystery (Ancestors or Wisdom for a Lore Oracle, for example).

That's pretty much what I did. The Oracle is a Life Oracle so I took (will take at 4) the Healing patron. I guess since I've chosen a Patron, I will be entitled to the 4 spells from it instead of the 2 from my Oracle's Mystery.

It seems like this is not much of a stretch, as I suspected. Thanks guys!
