PFS Improved Familiar Question

I'm after a 7th level Improved Familiar. I can not get this familiar till my character is level 8 (due to multi-classing).

I just leveled up to 7th level (6th level magus) and can grab both a feat and a arcana. I was originally going to grab the arcana allowing a Familiar and a feat which I'd then retrain at 8th level to Improved
Familiar.

...but I got to thinking. Can I grab both the arcana allowing familiars and the Improved Familiar feat as a 6th level magus and then once I level up, pay the gold to then get myself that 7th level Improved Familiar?

Prerequisites for feats are more like corequisites than prerequisites (the feat section explicitly says you can take a feat at the same level you take the prerequisite for the feat). So, yeah, you can totally take the arcana and the feat and then pay 1400 gp (200 gp per magus level) to swap the familiar next level.

Thanks. That's what I thought and I figure it's cheaper then retraining.

It depends on what other class you have. The Improved Familiar feat says it depends on the Arcane Spellcaster level.

This means that you have to be a 7th-level magus, or have a class that adds to that level. Not just a 7th-level character.

Right, which is why he won't be getting the familiar he wants until 8th level, when he takes his 7th level of Magus.

You can grab the feat as early as Caster Level 3rd.

Just don't "acquire your new familiar" until your Caster Level is where you want it.

My 6th level Magus get's both the familiar and improved familiar feat when he reaches 7th level (has 1 level multi-class).

Does it cost gold to "acquire your new familiar" in PFS?
and can you skip the normal familiar step?

Improved Familiar gives you one free swap [i]at the time you take the feat[i]. Any changes after that (like when you hit 8th and want the new familiar available at CL 7) will cost the 200 gp per level.
