Venture Teller Play b'Post |
Please introduce yourselves.
We will officially begin Friday May 28, but I will be traveling for much of that weekend and busy with RL. As such expect mostly role-playing banter to start and we will get into the game more earnestly after June 2.
Nightkit |
Nightkit is a female rogue wearing formfitting black leather armour, a knee length black cloak, with a tanned face and dark hair. So, hiding in dark places - not a problem. She has a short sword on one side and a dagger on the other.
Hi. Call me Nightkit - my adventuring name. I'm a sneak and peek person and prefer to be flanking with someone. Looking forward to adventuring with the rest of you.
Malakar Wandermore |
Malakar is a recent emigrant from Cheliax. Outside of Absalom (where he's only been a handful of months) and a recent trip to Tamran in Nirmathas, he has not been outside of Cheliax.
"Hello hello Nightkit. I'm Malakar the Great Powerful Magnificent Halfling.". A small head pokes out from his robe. "And this is Margrave the Marten."
"Unfortunately for you, I will not be flanking. Unless you want me dead. But I may know a creature or two that would love to help."
Markus Stonewarden |
The dwarf enters the room, and brightens seeing Malakar and Nightkit aleady there. The lights shine from this shaven head, and his beard is short and well-kept. Malakar, Nightkit, great to see you both again! Do you know each other? Kit, Malakar and I are just back from Tamran and rooting out Aspis spies there. the normally quiet dwarf seems overflowing with words this time. And Malakar, Kit and I were in Galt not that long before! Problems with pumpkins there.
Realizing there are others in the room, Markus bows deeply, his aestectic's robes almost strange on a dwarf. Greetings, I am Markus Stonewarden. A retired peace officer from the Five Kings, and of late, a world-traveler! He smiles, setting his pack and walking stick down to one side.
Grigory Reinhold |
I'll also be out and about over the weekend and likely won't have much of a chance to post before Tuesday.
A tall, broad figure draped in studded leather armor sidles in and tilts back a wide-brimmed hat, revealing a heavy, furrowed brow, a nose that looks to have been broken a time or two and square jaw with two long, sharp teeth protruding slightly upward from under his lower lip.
He nods to Nightkit.
"Good ta see ya again, Kit."
"Grigory," he offers, by way of an introduction to the others. "Or Grig. Whichever ya like."
Nightkit |
Hi Grigory. Likewise. Let's just hope that this job isn't as ... erm ... annoying as the last one. Although the ending was pretty sweet.
Oh yeah ... the pumpkins. She frowns a bit. I've been avoiding pumpkins ever since.
Merida Bowie |
A young red-haired woman in studded leather armor with a dark bow slung over her back and a longsword on her hip approaches the group.
"Grigory! Nightkit!" she exclaims and dashes forward, grabbing the ranger and the rogue in a big hug. "So good to see you again!"
Then she seems to remember her manners. She walks around and shakes hands, smiling exitedly.
"Hi, I'm Merida... Merida Bowie! This is my second mission!"
After introductions, Merida proudly shows Kit and Grig her new bow.
"Isn't she a beauty? Finely crafted darkwood... and now I can use all of my strength when pulling back the string, making the arrows hit way harder than with my old bow!"
Merida is a very chipper young woman who is easily excited and sometimes a bit naive.
But you do not want to incur her wrath... unless you want to become the target of her - more or less ;-) - well-aimed arrows...
Grigory Reinhold |
"Good ta see ya, Merida," Grigory responds.
"Hope our second mission got less skunks than the first. An' maybe that new bow'll make tha arrows hit what yer aimin' at better, too," he jokes.
Grigory studies Malakar, Tristan and Markus.
"Merida, Kit and me was just out babysittin' a sleepwalker all through the mountains not too far from here. I'm pretty good at trackin' and what not, but we didn't dare give 'im a head start on us or he'd try ta throw hisself offa cliff or inta a swamp or start tusslin' with any kinda creature that got in his way."
Tristan Beowulf Derexhi |
You have already been on a mission! But why did you not just wake up your sleepwalker. No Obviously you needed to find where your sleepwalker was going Tristan fidgets with a light crossbow of excellent quality [b]Tristan new field agent at you service
Nightkit |
Fourth counting this one Nightkit replied. Merida and Grigory will notice that the black knee length cloak Nightkit is wearing is a new addition to her ensemble, as is a wand currently stuck under her belt.
Anyone proficient in healing wands? she asks.
Grigory Reinhold |
"This is my second," Grigory tells Tristan. "An' yer right. Had ta follow him cuz he didn't remember nothin' once he woke up an' he kept gettin' hurt on his way ta where he was sleepwalkin' to."
"I can use a wand if it's one like Leon's, but it's fine with me if somebody else wants that job."
Noticing the new gear of his companions, he feels compelled to upgrade his own equipment before they embark on the next adventure.
Nightkit |
Nightkit shows it to Grigory. It's a Cure Light Wounds wand, fully charged.
I'm fairly sure it is she replied. His wand saved my life quite a few times so I thought I'd better get one of my own. And if you have to use it on others, sure.
Grigory Reinhold |
"Nice. That wand did come in handy with all the trouble Kalky got us into."
"Got myself a fancy lookin' axe. Supposed ta work good against demons an' such. Got a nicer bow, too, Merida," Grigory mentions. "Now maybe I can stay outta skunk sprayin' distance next time."

Hi all, Thank you for your patience (and your roleplay). I am excited for this table to get going. If you have not already done so. please look at slide three (link above) for handout Number 1.
Please make a DIPLOMACY (GATHER INFORMATION) or KNOWLEDGE (GEOGRAPHY, HISTORY, OR LOCAL)& RP your findings with evereyone.

Nightkit |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Looks easy enough. Go to a museum and look at an item. As long as it's not in the Blakros, this should be a walk in the park.
diplomacy: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
Fort Korvosa she says. Built by the Chelish as a fort on the entrance to Varisia. The city of the same name grew up around it ... and rumour has it it's full of imps, otyughs and shrew-flies - whatever those are. Anyway, Korovosa was named after this field-marshal who led a bunch of troops into Vaeisia to take on the Shoanti tribes, and got bogged down. They had to be rescued by this gentleman explorer ..... oooooh ... what was his name .... oh yeah ... Montlarion Jeggare.
Markus Stonewarden |
Markus, will ask around with Nightkit, trying to get her more information... but is too heavy-handed and constable-like in his demeanor, getting no where.
Aid Another, Diplomacy: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
Tristan Beowulf Derexhi |
History, Golarion geography or people. Not my area of expertise and no one will tell me anything around these parts. Taverns are not the most reliable sources of information. Now if you wish to know of the arcane or the elemental planes or more interesting things I could help you
Merida Bowie |
Merida also joins Nightkit in asking around.
Aid Diplomacy Take 10: 10 + 0 = 10
Her friendliness and positive attitude results in some useful information. (Nightkit gets +2 on her result.)
Malakar Wandermore |
Knowledge (history): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
Malakar nods at Nightkit. "I remember reading about Fort Korvosa in some old tomes my old master roommate had. Interesting place. Didn't think I'd ever visit."
Nightkit |
With Merida's help, Nightkit finds out about the Pathfinders who followed the armies around and examining all the sites in their wake. She does howeverm refuse to use the word 'plunder'. That, she blames on the Aspis Consortium.
Nah, never been either. Still should be interesting.
Markus Stonewarden |
Markus shakes his head in the negative as well, Had a distant cousin in Janderhoff who wrote a letter once from Korvosa to my father, said it was a place to be very careful always; but not much more than that...
Venture Teller Play b'Post |
Looks easy enough. Go to a museum and look at an item. As long as it's not in the Blakros, this should be a walk in the park....
Onto the museum...
The museum’s striking marble edifices rise above the surrounding terrain. Upon their arrival, the party is greeted by the museum’s current curator, a portly man adorned in a frock coat and ruffled blouse.
“Welcome to my museum Pathfinders! I am Mercival Jeggare, the head curator.” The scholarly figure gestures toward a grand entryway dotted with displays of weapons, artwork, and fossilized remains. “Come in, come in! Always a pleasure to host members of the Society. I assume this is in regards to the missive I received from Mr. Shane?”
Nightkit |
Just out of curiosity Nightkit asks. Does this museum have.. or had .... any .... erm ....unusual events occur ... like what happens in the Blakros?
Markus Stonewarden |
Markus waits silently for the scholar's response, observing everything around them while the others talk to him. Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Malakar Wandermore |
Malakar is always intrigued with museums and wonders why Nightkit keeps mentioning the Blakros's. "Lovely place you have here.". Malakar looks around, eyeing any ancient artifacts in the room.
"Did Shaine detail what we were hoping to find here?"
Merida Bowie |
Merida shakes the hand of the head curator a little too enthusiastically.
"Hi, I'm Merida, Merida Bowie! Yes, Venture-Captain Shaine sent us here. Thank you for welcoming us!"
Venture Teller Play b'Post |
Looking at the woman in black Jeggere's spine straitens and his eyes widen. "Unusual events? I should think not. Not that I believe a tenth of the stories coming from that place." He continues proudly.
“Most of the exhibits displayed here were collected by my family and ancestors. Of particular note is the esteemed Montlarion Jeggare. Never once have strange energies animated any of these, no monkeys, no dinosaurs, no flying masks or shapechanging walls."
"Thank you, Malakar was it?" he says turning to the halfling. "Yes thank you it is quite lovely. In recent years, the collection’s expanded to include treasures from other all over Golarion. Why just this morning, we procured several Tian antiquities. Presently, some personal effects of Monlarion's are undergoing restoration for public debut. Antiques from Korvosa’s founding, vestiges of conquered Shoanti tribes, and ancient rune-etched artifacts account for the bulk of the collection."
To the second question he answers, "No no he did not. Well not more than Monlarion Jeggare's Shoanti collection." He pauses for a moment, "Shall I point you to that collection then?"
Please feel free to ask other questions, I will answer them in a retcon as necessary.
Then when you are ready The head curator directs you to the largest gallery. "It has the largest collection of shoanti artifacts."
A massive glass-walled case dominates the center of the gallery and holds three bound volumes of the Pathfinder Chronicles. To the south, a table bears two metal chests as another holds two wooden reliefs.
Nightkit |
Oh you'd be surprised Nightkit cheerfully replied Still, we came to examine the Jaggare Collection, specifically something called the 'Speaking Artifact'. No idea what that could be though. Do you have any idea what Master Shane would have meant by that?
Venture Teller Play b'Post |
The scholar puts a hand to his lips as he is thinking. “I am unsure. Adding an enchanted mouth could make an artifact speak, I suppose. A ‘rider’ may suggest someone mounted or else a proviso or alteration of some prior statement or decree.”
Also: I added Mercival's picture to the slides. :)
Grigory Reinhold |
Grigory, naturally suspicious, attempts to gauge the genuineness of Mercival's responses to the questions about the museum and its contents.
Sense Motive + Favored Enemy: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Malakar Wandermore |
"I'd love to read those Chronicles sometime. They look important." Malakar says under his breath. "Are there any oddities in the Shoanti collection? Or what are we to find there?" he asks.
Venture Teller Play b'Post |
Grigory finds the curator pleasant and helpful, though he prioritizes preserving and maintaining his museum’s collection over any other concern. "Ah, here we are: The Grand Gallery."
Skylights illuminate this gallery. Exhibits displayed within decorative alcoves include several wooden totems and tools. More wood-carved pieces rest within a raised exhibition area to the north.
A massive glass-walled case dominates the center of the gallery and holds three bound volumes of the Pathfinder Chronicles. To the south, a table bears two metal chests as another holds two wooden reliefs.
Malakar heads to the glass case when suddenly, a resounding “crack!” and cascade of wood dust heralds the fall of an enormous glass skylight before it shatters upon the marbled floor.
What is that? screams Mercival. "Insects! Keep them away from anything wooden, or paper, or well anything plant-in origin!" [ooc](anything marked P on the map)
Two swarms of flying bugs descend into the room.

Markus and Nightkit, please remember to dot into the discussion thread :)
Grigory Reinhold |
"Should probably try not ta burn the place down, so killin' 'em with fire's probably a bad idea," Grigory suggests as he pulls out his club and charges toward the nearest swarm, swinging it wildly.
Club attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
Club damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Markus Stonewarden |
Following Grigory's lead, Markus steps forward, swatting at the swarms, unsure of the most effective thing to do here. Malakar, try your magic that you do!
Flurry of Blows: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Fob1 Dmg: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Flurry of Blows 2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
FoB2: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
5' step, Flurry of blows
Venture Teller Play b'Post |
Grigory clubs the insects, several crushed bodies stick to his weapon when he withdraws it. Markus crushes several more, and also becomes covered in the destroyed remains. No matter how many the crush however the swarm is unaffected.
Grigory realizes these are shrew flies, insects that voraciously consume all plant matter. He also remembers that a swarm is immune to weapon damage.
The swarms each move to one of the artifacts, eliciting screams from Mercival. As they attack and eat the artifact, hundreds of them also bite at Grigory.
green swarm damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
orange swarm damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
Round 1 (slide 5)
Grigory Reinhold (21): clubs swarm
Markus Stonewarden (20): punches swarm
Green swarms (19): move over artifact
Orange swarms: move over artifact

Nightkit (13): <-- here now
Merida Bowie (10): <-- here now
Malakar Wandermore (5): <-- here now
Tristan, Nightkit, Merida and Malakar are up! Grigory and Markus can also act in round two after the other four go.
Nightkit |
Nightkit whips off her cloak and grabs the artefacts in order to wrap it up tight and protect it from the shrew flies Hopefully the cloak of protection is tough enough to take it.
Also, maybe her leather armour would be a more tasty target
Malakar Wandermore |
Malakar groans. "WE NEED TO PROTECT THE PAPERS!" The halfling focuses hard on the orange swarm. "Stay away!"
Malakar carelessly flings some acid at the swarm.
Acid Dart: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4
He turns around and calls out, "There's another swarm over here! Help me before the swarm eats me alive!"
Venture Teller Play b'Post |
Alas, Malakar's dart manages to hit only a single fly which demolecularizes into smoke. Unfortunately taking a single fly out of thousands is ineffectual.
Grigory made the check, and learned the swarm is immune to weapons (including SLA which targets a single creature.) Would you like to try something else? This offer stands for Markus as well, since you technically went after Grigory's check.
Nightkit unrobes and covers one of the artifacts. Nearest one is in the swarm, do you want to go after it or the next nearest (due north) artifact?
Tristan Beowulf Derexhi |
nature: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19 Thanks malakar Surely this is not your first infestation where are your materials for dealing with these things Tristan heads for the mos distant objects (double move)
Markus Stonewarden |
Copy that!
Markus will instead grab the nearest artifact, scooping it in his arms, and moving away from the swarm of insects. I don't have anything better to affect them with, does anyone have a torch!?! the dwarf calls out.
Merida Bowie |
"I have alchemist's fire and acid!"
Merida hectically searches her backpack for the vials, grabbing the first one she can get hold of. (move action)
which vial: 1d2 ⇒ 2 (1=acid, 2=alchemist's fire)
"Fire in the hole!" she calls out before taking a 5-foot-step back and throwing the vial at the (green) swarm in front of her.
alchemist's fire + PBS: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 4 + 1 = 19
fire damage + PBS: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
+50% damage against swarms, if I remember correctly.
Also, 1 splash fire damage to all squares surrounding the square where the vial lands. Sorry, people!
On the round following a direct hit, the target takes an additional 1d6 points of damage (also +50% vs. swarms).
Grigory Reinhold |
"Weapons aren't doin' nothin'. There's too many of these shrew flies," Grigory shouts, exasperated.
"I got a sheet of canvas we can toss over the stuff they's tryin' ta eat if that'll buy us some time," he mentions.
Venture Teller Play b'Post |
"Canvas?!? yells Mercival. "Isn't that cotton, these bugs will eat right through it! though if it is made of wool or leather, it should not be a problem
The pathfinders begin quarantining the artifacts from the swarm. In Merida's case this means burning a large swath of the insects away.
