Pets / livestock of the non-human races

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Do the major non-human races (elves, dwarves, halflings, gnomes)have their own species/breeds of domesticated animals or they keep the same ones that humans do?

In the original D&D elves had elven dogs (cooshee) and elves cats (Caitshee).Do these exist in the Pathfinder setting?

Any body know?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Sometimes.

The "X of Golarion" books (where X is a race) sometimes have suggestions, and outside of Golarion or within the realm of GM invention there are all kinds of animals.

On the flip side, the majority of those creatures have the same stats as regular animals of one sort or another.

Without digging through the sourcebooks (it's late right now) I'll throw out a few that spring to mind from various settings:

Dwarves: Along with specialized "deep cows" which look like miniature buffalo, dwarves are known to occasionally domesticate Gorgons (at great difficulty) or at least contain and hunt them for their use as living weapons and their strange, stone-fed meat. Moreover there are a few clans who wear specialized stone armor and ride oversized rust-monsters into battle against their metal-equipped foes.

Elves: Along with winged cats and elven dogs, elves are known to make great use of Elk and trained birds for riding, hunting, and spying.

Halflings: Halflings breed the best riding dogs around, from racers to heavy lifters, and are also proud to have stolen and adopted the Riding Rat from ratfolk trainers.

Gnomes: Riding lizards are obvious, but the REAL trick to gnomes is their tendency to just try to tame weird things for the sake of the novelty. When Frigglish Tamwylde rode into town on a giant, colorful toad, everyone was impressed. When he started chasing the hallucinatory three-legged hyena cicadas everyone was unsurprised.

Half-Orcs: Everybody knows about the wolfriders and the warg riders, but it's the Riding Birds of the great plains that are truly a half-orc bailiwick. Pioneered and popularized by a great chieftain and leader of the dispossessed and otherwise unwanted half-orcs of the area, the cry of "kweh!" and the thunder of clawed feet became a well-known terror for enemies of his tribe.

Those were awesome, thanks!
