[PFS] Kitsune Bloodrager

I was looking to create a Kitsune Bloodrager for PFS.

I know the stats don't work that well for the class, but the concept works well for me.

I would like to go natural attack focused, working with Vulpine Pounce, but if that really doesn't work, then I suppose I could go a different way.

I am not sure how to go with the stat array, Bloodline, or feats.

Any advice?

Grand Lodge

Also, is there an archetype that works best with this?

The Exchange

just a quick write up
Str 14
dex 14(12)
con 16
int 8
wis 8(10)?
cha 14

feat Power attck?
blood line Abyssal/ draconic (gives claws)

can you give us more details for or ideals for what you are aiming for (and LVL?), is their a good story or theme and what are your aims with this class? also what are you willing to give up ie crossbloded?

Grand Lodge

Well... Bloodrage will raise your strength, so you could perhaps get away with 14 base Strength. Not ideal, but it can work. That's 10 of your 20 point buy with PFS.

Hmmm...

STR: 14
DEX: 16
CON: 14
INT: 10
WIS: 10
CHA: 12

While raging you'll have 18 STR and 18 CON.

Grand Lodge

Those are some good stat arrays.

I like the idea of working towards the Vulpine Pounce, and hitting with all attacks.

Abyssal does seem cool.

The Crossblooded seems a bit heavy on drawbacks, but maybe there is away around that.

Blood Conduit seems cool, for the free Improved Unarmed Strike, which opens up Feral Combat Training later, allowing for Brawling armor to effect claws.

Rage Shaper seems cool too, but I am not sure how to maximize that.

Liberty's Edge

If you're going the natural weapons route, rageshaper is good for a damage die increase to your claws. You could add on crossblooded to that to trade gain some of the better abilities like haste/displacement while raging instead of some of the abyssal or draconic bloodline powers.

I have an tiefling abyssal/destined crossblooded rageshaper who's going to be picking up cornugon smash and a cruel amulet of mighty fists, and eventually dazing assault. Between that and Intimidating Prowess as a bloodline feat, and carrying a horsechopper to trip at 20 feet, he should be able to make GMs cry.

I'll admit, beyond 25 feet he's not that great, but having Vulpine Pounce would probably fix that some, especially with the 2d8 claw damage

Grand Lodge

I just noticed the Abyssal claw don't seem to have a time limit.

Is this intentional?

Liberty's Edge

Okay, so looks like you just posted about everything I was going to suggest. If you're looking at a solution to the will save problem, I took the destined bloodline for the Fated Bloodrager power. So scaling luck bonus to AC and saves, which, at 8th level and with Fate's Favored is a +3 to all saves. So still 1 behind on the Will, but ahead on Fort and Ref. I also took Iron Will for the low levels before I could take the power, and I'm still stuck on whether I want to retrain out of it.

I think the time limit is your rage rounds

Liberty's Edge

It says you have them while bloodraging. Or at least it should. I haven't checked my hard copy, but it's in the PDF.

Grand Lodge

Hmm, the Desitned/Fate's Favored combo seems nice.

I am guessing Power Attack is the best choice for first level?

Liberty's Edge

That's what I took, it's really hard to say no to power attack with 3 primary natural attacks, even if it means a terrible will save for a couple levels.

Grand Lodge

I still can't find the text for Bloodline powers being only available during Bloodrage.

Do you know where I can find that text?

Liberty's Edge

When a bloodrager enters a bloodrage, he often takes on
a physical transformation inf luenced by his bloodline
and powered by the magic that roils within him. Unless
otherwise specified, he gains the effects of his bloodline
powers only while in a bloodrage; once the bloodrage ends,
all powers from his bloodline immediately cease, and
any physical changes the bloodrager underwent revert,
restoring him to normal.

That's right from the bloodrager bloodlines section.

Claws (Su): At 1st level, you grow claws while bloodraging.

And that's from the Abyssal claws ability.

Grand Lodge

Thank you.

Would Raging Vitality be a better choice at first level?

I have had experience with pretty brutal scenarios at first level.

hmm I don't think rageshaper effects the kitsunes bite or the abyssal claws because they are not gained through a polymorph spell. the claws are gained by supernatural means. the kitsune shapechange goes in the wrong direction but being as you presumable shift back with the same ability it might work, in general I'd say the bite is part of your natural form and Isn't gained when you change back.

The Exchange

I would still recommend power attack a majority of your damage as an pouncing natural attacker will come from static modifiers (power attack, str bonus, arcane strike, etc) I would also recommend a amulet of mighty fists to get past Dr because from what ive seen that is what hampers the multi attack characters.

The Exchange

ok quick build that I came up with on the top of my head
Abyssal kitsune blood rager
Str 14
dex 12
con 16
int 8
wis 10
cha 14
trait: reactionary, something for will saves
Feats
lvl 1 Power attack
3 iron will or wpn focus
5 arcane strike
6(bloodline) toughness
7 swift kitsune changer
9+BL ragepower* greater fort or Intimidating prowess
11 vulpine pounce
13+ dazing strike

*don't know if it flys in PFS

LVL 1 you have a two attacks +4 for (d6+6) and a bite for +4 d4+6 HP 14 not too bad

LVL5 you get a big upgrade to your attacks +7 (d8+11) with power attack and arc focus (this is without ability score increases and magic items) and it only gets better from here on out

things you should buy amulet of mighty fist at least +3 bonus to get past dr (furious, courageous, holy are nice as well)

cloak of resistance: you come across a lot of save or suck and your party will thank you when you are not dominated.

some kind of armor: not big but the little damages really add up

Str belt: increases damage so good

boots of springing/ speed: cause its that nice

this is just a quick build and I am in no way a barbarian/ bloodrager expert so don't take too much to heart. Also remember it is not always necessary to min max or Win in PFS so make something fun.

Grand Lodge

Is that better than the Crossblooded Abyssal/Destined with Fate's Favored, or is the drawback too much?

To be honest I don't know I'm just throwing out a simple skeleton build so people will add onto or take away as they see fit.

Grand Lodge

I am not sure if taking not Raging Vitality, at some time, is something I would be comfortable with.

Going unconscious, and losing all bonuses, and bonus hit points, seems like quite the death sentence.

Maybe, I am worrying too much.

Contributor

I would probably grab either fey, destined, or elemental as my bloodline.

Elemental has extra damage when you bloodrage, which will be nice since your Strength is likely going to be on the lower side. Fey is very flavorful and has awesome maneuverability coped with some excellent bloodline spells. Destined has flat-out numeric advantages, such as an on-use attack roll bonus and a passive saving throw bonus. Abyssal is also good because of the extra Strength bonus that you get at high levels, but you'd have to deal with the stigmatism that comes from having a very obviously demonic battle form while raging. I'd have to look to see which I like better.

In terms of archetypes, the rageshaper is somewhat thematic for the kitsune because of its emphasis on shapechanging, and as a result it might be worth your time depending on what your final build looks like. The idea of shapeshifting into a Tiny fox with a Small creature's bite attack is amusing, but it might not be practical.

Grand Lodge

Well, here is what I have, as a rough build:

Kitsune Bloodrager:
Unnamed Hero
Kitsune bloodrager (crossblooded) 1 (Pathfinder RPG Advanced Class Guide 15, 83, Pathfinder RPG Advanced Race Guide 192)

Fate's Favored Increase luck bonuses by 1.
Low-Light Vision See twice as far as a human in low light, distinguishing color and detail.
Power Attack -1/+2 You can subtract from your attack roll to add to your damage.

Grand Lodge

By the way, I have no idea how one would make the Rageshaper archetype work.

There just doesn't seem to be enough transmutation spells, especially those granting natural attacks, on the Bloodrager spell list, to take advantage of it.

Be on a team with a brown-fur transmuter. (Or have one as a cohort.)

Then eat everything.

Grand Lodge

Well, in PFS, you never know who you teammates are going to be.

Dark Archive

Just saying, but Fae bloodline is a better fit thematically. Kitsune being magical trickster creatures and all. Mechanically, I thought they weren't a bad bloodline.

blackbloodtroll:
Well, at higher levels, you can always get a wand of Beast Shape II to turn into an arsinotherium. 6d8 gore, or 8d8 if you dip ranger for Improved Natural Attack, can be pretty scary with Improved Vital Strike and Furious Finish. Especially once you can cast true strike on yourself as a free action.

With Strong Jaw, that would be 384 base damage.

Grand Lodge

I am not interested in the traditional Kitsune flavor.

At least, I feel no need to bound by it.

Grand Lodge

Any thoughts on the posted build?

Would it be better to take Steadfast Personality to remedy Cross-blooded Shaperager's wis penalty? It should cancel out the penalty and you can take power attack at level 3

Assuming I have the following stat:

STR 12
DEX 16
Con 14
Int 10
Wis 10
Cha 16

The Feat should give me +3 Will Save so I'll have +1 will save over -2 Will Save from Drawback.

Grand Lodge

I don't have 3XP on this PC, so I can still do a full rebuild.

Didn't Steadfast Personality get some kind of wacky nerf, along with the incredible amount of other nerfs in the recent slew of errata?

Scarab Sages

I don't think it's nerf though I'd like to read the slew of errata that you mentioned.

Whether it was a nerf depends on the build. It applies to all Will saves now, instead of just mind-affecting (so now it also protects you against negative energy, glitterdust, and... uh...). But it replaces Wis with Cha, instead of just adding it (unless you have a Wis penalty, then it still adds). So it's a nerf if you had a positive Wis modifier to start.

Also, it's now untyped instead of an insight bonus. So it's unusable by Paladins, and it no longer stacks with Charmed Life on Swashbucklers. But if you go 10 Wis, it should be good for a Bloodrager.

Grand Lodge

Are not untyped bonuses also typed bonuses, depending on what determines the bonus, because of complicated unwritten rules?

It's an untyped charisma bonus. It stacks with literally everything except other untyped charisma bonuses.

If it was a typed charisma bonus, it would stack with literally everything except other bonuses of the same type, just like always.

I've never really seen these rules as that complicated. Also, they're written explicitly in an FAQ.

Grand Lodge

Yes. The one that notes that some untyped bonuses don't stack, because they have dual sources, and may share one of their dual sources, with another untyped bonus, which also has dual sources.

This means a Bonus can be both from a feat, and an ability score, at the same time, meaning it has dual sources, and bypasses the rule for untyped bonuses being able to stack.

Dual sources, and "typed" untyped bonuses, are not covered in written rules.

The "FAQ" is an errata, which must call upon unwritten rules, to function.

So, in the example above, Steadfast Personality does not stack with Divine Grace, as it is no longer a single source Insight Bonus, but a dual sourced Untyped Bonus.

BBT, How do you plan to take advantage of the Fate's Favored?

One thing I looked at when trying to build a Kitsune Bloodrager was multi classing with Archeologist. One level of Archeologist gets you a luck bonus from your perform and some nice class skills plus the ability to use wands with Bard spells. It would also get you earlier access to Arcane Strike if you were going that way.

You will want to get Raging Vitality by 5th level.

Grand Lodge

Destined Bloodline takes advantage of Fate's Favored.

Also, now, new Feral Combat Training makes Brawling armor do nothing for Claws.

Will need to replace the feat choices.

Thoughts?

You aren't going to go maximum health barbarian first level and then rebuild later?

Grand Lodge

Possible.

The advantage of maximum health level 1 barb is he does pretty solid damage, and can have an ok ac if you carry a shield

Scarab Sages

If you can stand the name, Bloody-knuckled Rowdy will do equivalent damage to the claws build and still make use of the brawling armor.

Are you going to do anything more to try and shore up the weak Will save?

I admit that I don't like the Crossblooded Rager mostly because of what it does to Will saves. Making a well known weakness in the class even weaker is nasty.

You are using 2 traits and the Fated Rager bloodline power so that at 4th level you are breaking even with what a normal bloodrager would have as a bonus to Will saves while raging. When not raging, you are still behind what you would be without cross blooded.

Grand Lodge

These are some concerns I have had as well, but I am not now, how I would alter the build.

I know I complained about the "FAQ", but Steadfast Personality might be a valid option.

With things currently muddled, I wonder if anyone has some more suggestions to save the build.

Thoughts?

Pathfinder Starfinder Maps, Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

What were you looking to get out of the Destined Bloodline? It looks like you are going for a natural attack build, thus the abyssal.

Grand Lodge

Destined was for the luck bonus to AC and on saving throws, which would be increased by Fate's Favored.

Scarab Sages

How much extra luck bonus you will gain from taking Destined with fate's favor anyway?

Grand Lodge

+1.

Having a unique flat bonus of +2 to AC and all Saves at 4th level is hard to look past.

Especially, as it applies to Flat-Footed/Touch AC.

Contributor

My PFS Kitsune Bloodrager is Level 8 now.

This is basically what I used to build him, though instead of pumping Strength like I do in this guide, I started taking a bunch of Intimidate-focused feats, like Intimidating Prowess and Cornugon Smash.
