So I was looking at the Blackblade and was wondering, can it be a special material?
I can not find anything saying it must be the normal steel some of them are, however, it is a free item, and a hunk of adamantine is about 3k gold, on top of the 2300 price tag of a +1 weapon.
I then reread the Unbreakable ability. If the weapon could not start as mithral, could you reforge it as mithral after it gets broken?

On a side note, that isn't how "reforging" works. Reforging takes an item and heats it back up and works it, typically to repair cracks and such.
Reforging does not change the base metal type. That is called "starting from scratch."

the black blade, technically, is not a weapon but a symbiotic alien intelligent being.
IT's specifically created as a tribute to a certain pair of blades in books by michael moorcock (mourn blade and storm bringer)
The specifics of their creation/existence are intentionally ambiguous as to be left up to the individual magus… but as far as composition, as the rules currently are they cannot have special materials abilities (like silver, or the ability to by pass DR via adamantine) largely because they are made or something else (alien matter) what that something else is is up to the player… but its NOT mithral or adamantium etc...
