When sampling from a large pool, it can be kind of surprising how few you have to look at before some repeat. (The odds of SOME object repeating are much higher than the odds of a PARTICULAR object repeating.)
Think of those demonstrations where you don't actually need that many people before having good odds two of them have the same birthday. You just can't predict which people with what birthday. For each item you're seeing repeated, there are several you haven't seen at all.
Though someone last year (and the year before) did some more advanced statistical analysis to determine the overall entry pool from the repeat rate.

I've seen one specific item 7 times, twice in a row once. I hate this item. I have never voted for it and I want it gone. It is cool conceptually, but executed so poorly with, essentially, made up rules that I want to slap someone. Stop showing me this item. Even worse, stop putting it up against other garbage items because it is making me vote for crap.
Side note: are there always lots of just terrible items, or am I just unlucky/too picky?

There are always lots of bad items along with meh items beside the good. They tend to be hard to place in this analysis when being compared to each other, so they seem to come up a lot. When the cull occurs things will improve greatly.

Weirdly, this has happened to me exactly twice so far. I cast a vote and then the next two items are the exact same two items, but switched (the left one becomes the right, etc.). Not only have I seen quite a few items show up many, many times, but, this exact repeat has seemed exceedingly unlikely.
Anyone else encounter that particular bit of strangeness?

I feel like this voting system is trying to judge exactly how much I hate certain items. For every "eh" item I get to vote on, I'm voting on at least a dozen terrible ones. I've not seen any item I have liked repeat (and "like" is a loose term here), but the worst of the worst return again and again.
Are there great items out there? Has anyone seen one?
There are some I've seen so many times that are so bad, I just wish I could talk about them and how bad they are.

I have seen this as well. It could be coincidence or it could be an anti-bot and/or sanity check. Say you voted for the left item five times in a row, maybe they swap the two items just to see if you are paying attention.

Remember that you're helping decide the Top 32, and even if there are only 320 entries this year (and there have been far more than that in previous competitions), that means that 90% of what you're looking at isn't Top 32 material.

Of course they're there! I saw one just before I hit 'submit' :)
In all seriousness though, the middle of the pack will be seen more often.
Were you looking over my shoulder when you saw that? :P

Well, on top of all that, in order for it to be a complete sorting algorithm, you will necessarily need to be shown repeats. If it shows you A vs. B, and you say B is better, then shows you C vs. D, and you say C is better, it knows B>A and C>D, but it doesn't know if B>C. So if it then shows you A vs. C and you say C is better, then it can complete the equation as B>C>A>D. Since we have such a gigantic sampling pool, it's hard to see this as an end-user.
I mean, if you compare six points of data (six items) using this method:
A vs. B: A is better
C vs. D: D is better
E vs. F: E is better
...sorts as three distinct pairs: A>B, D>C, E>F.
Then asking the following:
A vs. D: A is better
(A>B, A>D>C, E>F)
D vs. E: E is better
(A>B, A>D>C, E>D, E>F)
B vs. C: C is better
(A>D>C>B, E>D, E>F)
A vs. E: A is better
(A>E>D>C>B, E>F)
B vs. F: B is better
(A>E>D>C>B>F)
And this complexity is only with six data points. We're looking at upwards of, what, 700 entries at this point?

To make matters even more complicated, Voter #101 votes like you described above, but Voter #374 thinks A and D are better, and votes that way.... It gets messy in a hurry....

I've seen doubled repeats a few times (A v. B, followed by B v. A). It usually happens immediately next to itself, but there has been a few times where I'm certain I've got the same pair at a way later time.
I'm paranoid that I'm going to reverse my judgement on these.
Most of the time it isn't a problem, but there have been a few times where my judgement came down to something really nit-picky (like a forgotten comma, or the fact that the creator likes gnomes). When it was close to a tie I could easily vote differently at different points in the day.

If it makes you feel any better, reversing your vote would basically change A>B or B>A to A=B, which is still better than A?B.
