templates on PC, using spell-like abilities to charge items.

Rules Questions

So I have seen a lot of almost answers or straight up contradicting ones. How do you handle a PC that wants a template? There are rules for lowering a CR as lvl increase. While the template increase as the HD lvl goes up. They almost balance out to keep it at a +1 or 2 for most templates, as a power gamer I'm all for that. But the recently built "balanced" player side says that's a no go.
Also alot of the templates give you spell like abilities. Could you use said abilities to charge a staff or does it have to be a spell slot?
Thanks in advance

OK, lets for example take the Half-Celestial Template.
CR: HD 5 or less, as base creature + 1; HD 6–10, as base creature + 2; HD 11 or more, as base creature + 3.

So unless the characters are starting at level 2 say no. If you are newish to running say No anyways, as it will cause some issues.

When the Character gets to level 5 (everyone else should be level 6) his CR goes to +2 HOWEVER he has enough character levels to buy it down to 1 (as per Monsters as PC's) Appendix 4 in the bestiary. So he continues to level and just atay one level behind.

At level 10 (when everyone else is level 11) he should add one mor eto his CR. Since it is not reduced below half (round up) he now effectivley adds 1 more to his level.

This can be done one of two ways.
Option 1) Everyone levels to 11, he stays at level 9. He is now SLIGHTLY below everyone for one level.

Option 2) Everyone levels to 11, he goes to 10 and then when everyone levels to 12, he stays at 10. He will now be SLIGHTLY above everyone for one level.

I would run it as Option 1 because the player is choosing the template.

BIG CAVEAT: With that said, not all templates are equal just as not all classes or monster races are equal. If you allow players to do this you may end up opening a can of worms where either the template/Race meshes extremely well making it an overpowered combination or the template/Race does not mesh at all making it a very Underpowered combination. IF YOU CHOOSE TO DO THIS IT WILL REQUIRE MORE WORK FROM THE GM BALANCING NOT ONLY ENCOUNTERS BUT THE PARTY.

With that said for players it can be lots of fun and I am particularly fond of Rogues who are racially Advanced Dopplegangers:)

One GM to another, avoid templates on PCs if you can. They add a lot of trouble when trying to figure out appropriate CRs. Most are not really appropriate for a PC anyway (lich and vampire being the most common ones looked at)

That said, it is do able. I had a player be a natural lycnthrope (with no ability to spread the curse) but only if they traded in 1 level. The trade is more pronounced on spell casters then it is on martials as the +1 to hit is often made up for in feats or ability increases, where as it is harder to make up for a lower CL and slower spell levels. Not to mention a number of abilities tied to class levels (wild shape, animal companion, monk fists).

Cool thanks guys. @ughbash that makes a lot more sense then what i have been seeing in the threads. @dafydd that's a neat idea i might have to steal that.

any input on the charging of items bit?

@charging staffs

It is a grey area. There is an FAQ that SLA can be used in crafting items(debated whether that is just weapons/wonderous items or all magic items), but I do not know if that would extend to recharging a staff. My instinct is yes, but my brain fails to find any ruling to help it.

What the player wants to make is a half fiend/ Goblin. saw a thread where the DM did alternate things depending on the fiend parent. I.e. a succubus would get charm spells and wings, different form a bearded devil, no wings and other spells. I liked this idea but I'm thinking it could be a whole can I don't even want to open. could a player add extra limbs to a "base" class as a lot of fiends have those and i don't see anything i can take out to balance and not sure how OP extra limbs are?

and how would figuring out the PC's SR work out? it says CR+11 ... :/ that seems like it could get wonky fast. would you use its class lvls in place of its CR?
