[Kobold Press] Caster Level for Theurge base class

Product Discussion

The theurge base class recently came out:
http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/3rd-party-classes/kobold-press-open-design/ theurge

The question I have is does it have 1 caster level for both Arcane and Divine or two different ones?

Also what happens when you prestige this class?
Theurge Qualifies for Eldrich Knight eventually. When you add +1 exisiting arcane caster level do you progress both spell sides or just one?

Or would you need a class that is ambiguous +1 to exisiting caster level either arcane or divine like loremaster to progress both at the same time?

Ofcourse this is the case if it has just 1 caster level that is considered both arcane and divine. Unless im misreading something.

thoughts?

The theurge is an arcane caster, therefore it advances normally through Eldritch Knight.

Where are you seeing it's just an arcane caster? It prepares both types of spells.

This question would be best asked in the 3rd Party Forum. I've flagged it for removal so you can better get an appropriate answer.

The real question here is:
Since Theurge qualifies for Mystic Theurge at level 3, would you gain two theurge caster levels per level and could thus go for Theurge 3 / Mystic Theurge 10 for a caster level of 23 at level 13?
(That was sarcasm)

Anyway. My personal impression of Kobold Press is that while their stuff is often flavourful and evocative, it is also often horribly broken or at the very least needs tons of clarification and more than average Game Master administration.

In other words, ask your GM. There is no official "both Arcane and Divine" class that could be used as precedent.

I actually answered this in the New Paths Compendium forum, but here's what I said:

The Eldrich Knight says +1 level to existing *arcane* spellcasting class, so I'd say a theurge/eldrich knight would only have his effective arcane caster increase, while his effective divine caster level would remain equal to his theurge level.

If a theurge would take a prestige class such as Loremaster, which gains new spells per day as if he had also gained a level in a spellcasting class he belonged to before adding the prestige class, he would follow the rule detailed in the prestige class which say: a character having more than one spellcasting class before becoming a loremaster must decide to which class he adds the new level for purposes of determining spells per day.

Does that help?

@Dusk_Shine: I'm going to have to respectfully, but strongly disagree with you. In my humble opinion, Kobold Press consistently puts out top quality material. Certainly, no company is perfect, not even Paizo, but to make a comment like "Kobold Press stuff is also often horribly broken or at the very least needs tons of clarification and more than average Game Master administration." seems rather harsh.

Kobald? Is that a shrill little humanoid with no head hair?

I didn't say 'just'. It IS an arcane caster, so it advances normally through EK. The fact that it is also a divine caster doesn't factor in.

@Marc Radle: Yeah, I have to be fair: The main reason KP stands out to me is because I *like* KP, the fluff at least. I don't notice many flaws from other publishers because I don't read them as much. But the thing from KP I'm most familiar with is the Savant class, which... has problems.

As far as the Mystic Theurge thing goes, I'd take a cue from Rogue Genius Games' Magister class, which 'highly recommends' you not be able to use one class to fulfill both requirements of the MT; you can only use it to fulfill one prereq of 'ability to cast X Level (arcane/divine' spells'.

Fair enough! The savant is kind of a unique case though - it's a very complex class specifically for players and GMs ready, willing and able to adjudicate things when necessary. The savant shouldn't be used as a base line to judge all Kobold Press classes or material by a long shot! :)
