Imagine all the clunky ways a less Superstar designer might have tried to create that item (something involving [Redacted] transforming into [redacted] when exposed to [redacted], perhaps). As written, [Redacted] is a perfect example of a designer re-purposing existing mechanics to create entirely new flavor without having to invent a new rules subsystem.

Unless, of course, you aren't talking about [Redacted]. In that case, never mind.

That was the most enjoyable post that I seen in a while.

Well, if we're talking about [redacted] it could have been Superstar, but it didn't go far enough. It was an interesting idea, using the [redacted] theme, but then you have all the spell requirements of the item, like [redacted], which are present in the flavor text, but don't actually manifest into a mechanical ability. If the [redacted] just does [redacted], then why saddle it with extra crafting requirements that don't add to the overall product? If it had been a [redacted] that can only use the [redacted] ability when [redacted], and during that time all [redacted] cause a [redacted] effect, that would have put it into Superstar level for me.

Unless we are talking about [redacted], in which case I can't speak to it because I don't think it has come up for me in voting yet.

I think we should petition the Messageboard folk to create a redacted tag that could be applied to words and replace them with a thick black line, or maybe bunnies.

Next year, I'm going to submit an item named [Redacted]*

* I'm not actually going to do this.

Any post containing [redacted] should change the poster's avatar to a crotch shot of that retraining Valeros image with a suggestive black bar added to it.

Closing in on 2000 votes and just seen an item for the first time. Then it showed up in the next pairing. Then two more pairings down the line it shows up again. Clearly trying to make up for lost time. (Fortunately for all, it's not a bad item and won two out of three pairings.)

Think name of item has a typo, but not sure...

I distinctly remember during my item-testing period, that my pit crew instructed me not to use the phrase "As per" when referencing an effect of a spell.

Example:

"Illuminates a 20-foot radius as per the light spell." = Wrong :(

"Illuminated a 20-foot radius as light." = Right!

At least, this is what I was told. DISCUSS!

I won't ding you for that, it's your word count after all :D

That said, Template Fu, says the second entry is the mostly correct form used in existing items... or at least in the one's he found on a quick PRD scan ;)

You should have said "as light spell."

But even that is inconsistent...

Amulet - "allows its wearer to utilize plane shift."
Amulet - "just as a nondetection spell does"
Bead - " like a resilient sphere spell"

This variance is why I won't get too upset about which way you went, however, if you use "as" or "like" constructs, I will expect to see "spell" after the spell name :D

I also hate spellcasters, but I think magic items are the wrong place to address that since, barring highly unusual circumstances, spellcasters are the ones making this stuff.

It is the "Cull." As in:

cull
noun
1.a selective slaughter of wild animals.
2.an inferior or surplus livestock animal selected for killing.
verb
1.reduce the population of (a wild animal) by selective slaughter.
synonyms: kill, slaughter, destroy, harvest
2.send (an inferior or surplus animal on a farm) to be slaughtered.

As opposed to:

purge
noun
1.an abrupt or violent removal of a group of people from an organization or place.
verb
1.remove (a group of people considered undesirable) from an organization or place in an abrupt or violent manner.
synonyms: remove, get rid of, expel, eject, exclude, dismiss, sack, oust, eradicate, clear out, weed out
2.evacuate one's bowels, especially as a result of taking a laxative.

These are not pleasant terms and I've said before that maybe we should use a less harsh word for this event. Any suggestions?

Cull is definitely better than purge and I don't think we can—or should—soften it. To be a professional writer requires a thick skin and no matter what you call it, being cut will hurt...if you are aware of it. Remember they don't actually list whose items were culled. There is only the confirmation of seeing your item post-cull to know that it wasn't removed.

By leaving it as cull, it accurately describes the removal process and the inherent harshness of the cut. "Cut" could be used, but as anyone who was part of a tryout for anything could tell you it is no better. Cull is what emerged and barring overwhelming support for another term, cull it most probably shall remain.

While I believe your heart is in the right place, I think a few of those very accurately portray how I feel about a few of these items I have to keep seeing.

In the spirit of fair play, rather than use a word like purge, cull, or reduction, why not use a word that has a positive connotation... suggesting we are uplifting certain items as opposed to cheering about the "Crap Item Smackdown."

There's that item that doesn't seem to do anything again.

It's got spells in the construction requirements. I wonder if they left out a paragraph somehow?

Thats the first interesting Earthbreaker hammer I've seen.

Fills a niche design space, but I would seek it out as a player on a certain type of quest.
