Jeff Harris 982 wrote: dare I attempt Champion status.... Well, it is a nice row of titles you have. Technically you should wait til next year to get Champion.
Been seeing a lot of barbed rings that tighten - at least 4 unique ones.
Whoa, such useful mid level armor for just 5k gp?
got yourself an rather impressive tag yourself Mr. Alexander Bennett, well done there.
new themes on my voting page:
weapons sharp enough to cut reality open and trigger teleport effects
weapons that alter/change selff the wielder when they stab somebody
hide armor of a specific type of aminal
hey, hello star voter tag

Considering it's mostly venting, you're not missing much. :)
Not yet Star Voter, and already saw one item for the 5th time.
I dedicate this post to the templates that were harmed during this competition.

Why yes, I would like a full-color illustration of your item. I need a tie-breaker factor.

Sorting thru my folder (I'm pack ratting everything) I see the racist item. An unfortunate choice and likely accidental racism but yeah down
vote.
Beware of designing off of a real life culture and emphasizing the worst stereotypes about them.

Adding new bingo square to next years bingo sheet. Armour of fitting in.
Looking for that perfect gift for evil bloodless wizards this season? Come on down to RPGSuperstore for all you soul sucking rod needs!
Hard to shop for Lich on your list, what a bout a rod of Innardsnibbling!?
shy Fighters lurking in your foyer? What about armour of bob, yes they can get comfortably lost in the crowd at your New Years party!
And for the little ones clockwork gnome Combes that'll have their hair standing on end!
So when you think of Chrizmas think of me, the Sheild with a snake on my face vomiting out gifts for your whole party!
Pretty sure I've seen that pairing before as a pairing.
"Gnarl" and all iterations of it, seems to be a polular word.
Also, no lie, I literally just got goose bumps reading the description of one ring. Bravo to you, and I would be hard pressed to upvote anything that ring goes up against. Bravo.

Did the dwarfs of golarion discover a million tons of mithril when I wasn't paying attention? There's no reason to make that from mithril
That's not fair! Your magic item description shouldn't be allowed to make me cry!

Of course i want to spend 100,000's of gold on something that may kill me just as well as kill my enemy.

Summary from my last two voting sessions:
So now I think I've seen most things enough that the trends are starting to cancel each other out for me.
Oh, there's another one that does that. Well, do you do it better than the others then? Not really? Well, you can't be blamed for the others doing it well. Blah. Whatever. What do you ACTUALLY do that makes you not just this spell.
Honestly though I am starting to get some situations where I look once at each item, frown at one of them, red them both and then frown some more. Usually at the timer, because obviously I'm going to be voting for that one. Again.
There are about as many items that I have seen more than one, as there are items that I have seen only once.
Positive themes: Special materials that ACTUALLY make sense with what this one does. Move things around in innovative ways. Change something from what it usually does in a subtle but neat fashion.
Indifferent themes: Unstoppable force (/teleportation). Unmovable wall (/typically shields). Wind/mist and the void seems to be interchangeable (bit sad, but all three are themes I like). Ooze. Blood. Snakes. Plants.
Annoying themes: Exaggerated gore for no good reason. Goblin item (honestly, I love Goblins, but what's with throwing goblin flavor on something for no obvious reason? It WILL NOT make me vote for an item that does nothing I haven't seen in the Core Rulebook only with goblin flavor attached). Angel/good force item for no purpose other than it's shiny.
Rods somehow do not annoy me. At least not a few of them, which seem to do the thing they do really well, and for which, honestly, sure, it could be a wondrous item, but a rod makes fine sense.
Finally have seen some staff that don't just make me go: "yeah, but like every other staves, I want to like you, but I just plain don't need you for anything, ever".
Armors and weapons seem to be fairly random.
Rings I seem to dislike more than I like them. There's good rings, but there's far between those.
Shields do some nice things, but there's also some sad ones.

Why do so many of these armors that sprout wings and grant flight seem to have perfect maneuverability? It makes no sense to me. If you're going to be able to perfectly maneuver, don't give me something as clumsy as wings. Just give me a badas.. er, awesome aura, and let me zip all over the place....
If your item is part of a "set", ie. a complete suit of armor of "someone specific" exists out there somewhere without this [redacted] item or this is one of "x number" of rings/rods/staves, then you do not have the correct type of item for this contest. You have created a unique item or an artifact.
Thank you, I didn't know that word could be used in that way, now I do. The dorsal part of my brain thanks you.

And this, my friends, is the design space where Super Stars are made.
Overpriced vs. hilariously underpriced. Overpriced it is.

Oh, and enough with the items that are so clearly cursed - in which I include items which do something nice that's really powerful, but also something really horrible (like, say kill you?) - it's either cursed, artifact or at best an item plot device, which provides a short cut to something, that I (GM mode) would never let a player do with just one item. There's a reason it's a plot or sub-plot: I don't actually intend for it to happen without something interesting happening along with it...
And items that only ever work if you're wearing/using them when you die. Chances are, an item that does nothing until you die will get one look, tossed in the bag and sold or left there. Most people would probably prefer an item that gave them a slightly better chance of surviving to something, that did something weird once they died.
Aaand that's enough for now.

I totally just got this item. Well it was one that would fit these lines, though there are probably more than one. Seriously, why would you name any item that, let alone that one? Maybe there is pun in there that I'm missing? I don't get it. It definitely tips the balance to the item it is paired with.
Oh no! You're a very well designed shield that got stripped of formatting because you don't know the forum formatting and didn't use the template!
You got my upvote, I hope others take the time to read you.

Or permanently maim you O.O
Unremarkable shield with built-in spell ability vs. unremarkable weapon with built-in spell ability.
The positive is that together they are less than 150 words.

That's two items with the numbers 0 1 2 and 5 in the name! not in that order.

All right, after hitting Dedicated yesterday, I'm taking a break. Dragon Age still needs to be beaten, after all. I'll live with knowing someone else has seen my item.
But I have found my personal pet peeve for the year: unlimited, game-changing, immediate actions. If your entry reminds me of how guilty I felt playing a Panther Style monk, then I'm going to have to look twice at your item to make sure it says AWESOME and not just POWER.

Items, stop just telling me things happen. Saves are a mechanic for a reason. So many items missing them for some mean effects.
I wonder if I get Champion, will I see my item at least one more time.

Those words really don't mean what you think they do. Is this someone who didn't bother reviewing their item? Or is it someone who isn't yet fluent in English and had to use Google Translate? Does that make a difference?
Oh, looking at the other item, guess not. Not this time!

Or permanently maim you O.O There's some scary stuff in here. What on earth do these peoples' games look like? Are they sure they don't want to play Call of Cthulhu instead?
And by "taking a break" I meant "after voting twenty more times."
Does voting addiction have a saving throw?
The google doc I'm using to keep all the items I see is well over 200 pages and it's starting to buckle a little

Whenever I see an entry that looks like that, I give them the biggest benefit of the doubt that perhaps it was someone who is under 18 and excited to be entering along with dad, mom or another older sibling.
We also do have a lot of ESL entrants, among the notables - Christine Schneider, 2008 Champion from Germany and Jacob Trier, twice Top 16 contender who is Danish. I am certain there are others, but they are the two who I know the names of and their accomplishments off the top of my head, so please do not be offended if I do not know you personally. Introduce yourself to me in a PM!
If that item I voted for 10+ times makes the top 32, it is only polite to send me a thank you card.
Ok that item is gettign used in a game soon, it's evil and the party can't use it making it an excellent scene enhancer without adding party wealth bloat. Nice job.

Just remember everyone, if there is a cull, you will need to see you item again...
Lackluster item that I've seen 4 times already (and managed to vote for it all 4 times) vs obviously broken item that had such a good premise, but ultimately is just an underpriced item with possible penalties that should never affect a moderately competent player.
Lackluster item for a fifth time it is!
that item description envinces an image of Courtney love but I'm still going to up vote it
