Tropes of the 2015 Superstar Class
1) Earthbreakers- not bad but they are this year's Torc
2) Dimensional Door items- I even made one in another thread!
3) Diarming Shields- which is oddly specific
4) Trees- because "I AM GROOT"
5) Thieving rings- not quite as baqd as the thief replacement items off last year.
The good news is several of these are done really well, the bad news is the good sometimes gets lost in the shuffle with the bad.

don't forget swords that are only good for judgmental holy warriors of light, because the rest of the world just isn't PURE enough to have a sword of awesomeness
that item would have been awesome if costed appropriately.
the rest of us have to make due with swords of mediocrity

...and for the DeathQuaker crack I just had to vote for an item I swore I would never vote up because the opposing item was just far too hokey!

There's a whole lot of chain shirts, hide armor, and full plate. Would liked to have seen more variation in armor types. There are a few, and one in particular is just kooky and cool enough to make my Top 32.

We have that, it's called a +2 Greatsword!

Yeah, there are a lot of items where it seems like the designers wanted to stretch into a particular design space, but weren't comfortable stepping away from what they thought were the "best" types of items. It messes with the theme and ends up making items seem disjointed.
Example: Let's say I want to make a suit of armor with earth-based abilities. Down and dirty stuff. Rough. Unfinished. Something that would serve a fighter well. While a shiny set of mithril full plate would arguably be the best stuff mechanics-wise, I should be looking at this like a designer, not an optimizer. Mithril doesn't scream "earthy." In fact, it's the opposite. If I want to fit my theme, I'd go with stoneplate. Designed right, the magic armor should be attractive enough to get someone to wear it, even if its base type isn't optimal.
*Edit: I picked this theme because I hadn't seen it in any items. Now, of course, I suddenly get earth-themed items. However, these aren't displaying the point I was making above.
