RPG Superstar™ General Discussion

Just browsing through the various discussions, I'm noticing there are a lot of first time entrants this time around.

I'm curious just how many of us there are.

And why...

Was it the shift from wondrous items to weapons, armor, etc?

For me, personally, this was the first year that I had both time and opportunity. The first round twist was icing. :D

Well, I was considering entering last year, but I didn't find inspiration soon enough. Overall I didn't think about it until too late. So I resolved to enter this year after not getting anything in last year.

This year I found nearly instant inspiration and got my first draft done the night of the announcement, but with help refined it over 4 or 5 drafts with friends before submitting. Thank you to those that helped me, your experience aided my submission greatly.

I am looking forward to seeing what other people have come up with and am starting to seriously think about maps, just in case I should make it into the top 32. Best of Luck to everyone!

First timer here!

My decision to submit was also due to having time and actually noticing the Superstar announcement ahead of time this year. The change from wondrous items to the current set of items helped too. I came up with my submission quicker than I did with a wondrous item.

Marathon Voter Season 8

Can I count as a first-timer if the last time I entered was the first RPGSS in 2008? As best I can recall, when I got the announcement email for this year I was like "enh, why not...". I think the reason I did this year but not the others is more of a subconscious confidence thing.

The past year has had some pretty intense play sessions where the DM and party upped our game, to the point where the party is using a google doc spreadsheet to maintain discussion of how our character abilities and spells can potentially synergize, so we have a lot of set plays to quickly call upon. I feel like I'm at my peak for knowledge of the rules, balance, potential exploits, and how to make things interesting.

WELCOME FIRST TIMERS! I love seeing so many new people getting involved with the contest. Looking forward to seeing your names in the Top 32, if not this year...some time soon I am certain.

Hi,

I'm a first timer as well. I missed the superstar last year so I decided to join this year on time, so, here I am.

Good luck everyone, hope to see some of the first timers in the next round as well :)

Stay positive.

Present. I did submit an item but I'm more interested in all the cool stuff people can come up with.

I'm also a first timer! I figured it would be a good learning experience to push me out of my comfort zone, and boy was it. I can't wait for the voting to see what other people have come up with!

First timer as well. My entry was for fun so I'm more looking forward to other people's stuff.

I was pushed to do this by freinds, becuase my dream is to be an RPG Developer of somekind. I'd love to write a module.

I've always wantd to participate in this event, but I normally don't have the confidence to.

It took about a year of egging from various sources for me to try this year's challenge.

My names in the hat, I might as well give it the best that I got.

I would also like to welcome all of the first timers! I am still quite a novice at this (last year was my first year). I hope to see at least one first timer make it to the Top 32 (even if I am not as lucky).

Good Luck! And try not to stress out before/during/after the voting!

Star Voter Season 8

I'm a fist timer. I was going to enter last year but I ended up having to work too many holiday hours to finish my submission in time.

Good luck all.

ADVICE: If you don't make it don't give up...keep trying 32 is a small number and many great items are there but don't make it to the very top. Learn from the experience and keep at it.

Also if you do make it, try not to get bogged down on the feedback in your thread. Get to work on the next task right away. I did that the first year and my later entries suffered since I was too caught up on what people were commenting about my item that I lost valuable editing time.

I didn't even know that RPG Superstar existed until last year, by which point I'd missed it.
I'm an aspiring novelist (though unpublished, so still keeping the day job), so this competition is right up my alley. I actually already have my monster and encounter ideas. It was the magic item that had me stumped. I almost missed out because it took me so long to figure out what I was going to submit!

Dedicated Voter Season 8, Star Voter Season 9

I'm a first-timer, and I've been doing pretty involved design-work for my home game, but I only just heard about this contest through ENWorld. I've played RPGs for a long time and I've been on the internet for a long time, but my chocolate never quite mixed with my peanut butter. I'm very excited to be a part of RPGSS this year, though!

I have read about the submissions each year and thought, that is really awesome. I decided it was my year to submit something. I've been running and playing in games for years now, and the switch away from Wondrous items gave me a lot more options. I can't wait to see what happens this year, especially as I am now a part of it!

First-timer. I blame Owen and his foul twist. That and my ideas for items are generally *not* Wondrous Items, so I was already "in the groove," as it were.

So - TAA-DAA!!

Well, win or loose it was/is a good experience. I'm not sure how far I'll get. I think I did everything right. It's a good thing the formulas work the way I do math.

Is that an unfair advantage?

I really only found out about Superstar recently (sometime shortly after 2014 had been won I believe), and I'm interested in testing out my design chops. I'm feeling good about my entry, so here's hoping others like it! :)

I was actually a first timer (and only-timer) when I entered in 2011. Looking back, I would definitely say to not be too discouraged if you don't make it in your first time. Instead, make sure to follow the contest closely (what missteps contestants make with entries, what things they do well) and bone up on your Golarion lore (it tripped me up and I've seen it trip up other contestants). I don't know if I would have done better if I had more experience with the contest but I definitely think it wouldn't have been a bad thing.

But if you do get in your first try, then good luck! I would use the remaining time before the Top 32 are revealed to practice your cartography skills just in case.

Star Voter Season 8

I just started playing Pathfinder this Summer. I enjoy writing, so when I heard about the contest, I thought I would give it a shot.

Congratulations to all our new contestants!

You all have made a bold and exciting decision. It can be tough to put your work out there for everyone to read and critique but it can also be very rewarding (and not just if you make the Top 32). This is a chance to learn and grow not only as a designer but as a player or GM. I wish you all the best of luck and hope you have a good time.

Welcome aboard!

Just the expansion of submission options alone is probably driving a lot of new traffic, going from "Propose an X" to "Propose an A, B, C, D, or E".

The options are also more "mainstream" and approachable. "Wondrous item" is actually kind of specific due to what it excludes. As well, a lot of less experienced players may not have used Wondrous items regularly enough to be sufficiently comfortable with them to hazard a proposal. Pretty much everyone has had magic armor, weapons, and rings and can picture ways characters would use them and get relevant inspiration for new items. The new format casts a higher quality net a few size categories larger.

I'm also a first-timer and am happy to see so much support for all of us 'noobs' :) I came across the contest last year after it had already begun and only by chance saw a post on the Paizo Blog last week that reminded me that RPGSS 2015 was about to begin anew!

Best of luck to all, worst case we will get some free feedback on our work!

cheers,

This will have been my first year entering as well. I've been playing pathfinder for only a little more than a year, so I can only hope that I can compete with the stellar examples that I've seen looking back at previous years.

(While this is my first time to actually enter, I've watched RPGSS with varying degrees of intensity since the very first one. I'm not an early adapter, what can I say. But I always knew I would enter.)

This is me as well. I was running a news blog on the short-lived and ill-fated Gleemax when the first RPG Superstar came along and so followed it closely so I could report on it.

And then I ended up working for...that other company and couldn't enter due to strict non-competition rules as part of my employment (as part of the community management team).

I was laid off back in March so...

Now, I can finally enter and so here I am. :D

By submitting, you're already ahead of at least 95% of the other forum members.

It's also good practice, for your own games, even if it doesn't get you into the top 32.

I encourage every player I know to try their hand at GMing, because it's only by doing so that you realise what's involved, and that appreciation leads them to become better, more considerate players.

Similarly, everyone should design an item for their home game, and a monster, a spell, a class, a feat, and so on.

Liberty's Edge Star Voter Season 8

I'm a first timer here, too.

To be honest, the basic reason I didn't enter last year (or possibly even the year before) is that I mostly spend time on this site on the Pathfinder RPG forums specifically, and thus have an annoying tendency to miss the announcement for things like this.

This year, I caught it in time. :)

So...that's my (extremely prosaic) reason.

This was the first year I was conscious it was coming up, and I had an idea so I just figured I'd give it a whirl. It got my mind off some life problems for a few hours at least.

The decision to try was eleventh hour, as was the actual writing, so I won't be surprised if it doesn't make it this year. But getting my hands back into design is a good thing.

First timer for RPGSS or any other type of contest.

Last year I went home for christmas, and while avoiding family in the basement, I discovered the contest. Thank you paizo for getting me through the holidays!

This year I figure I would have even more of an excuse to hide out in my old dungeon if I actually had an entry in ;)

First time for something that wasn't specifically for a campaign I was participating in.

My entry is the first time I've designed or submitted anything for any RPG, contest, or public review of any sort outside of technical documents at work. Granted, I write those all day, so they don't count.

I do create new items for home games on occasion, but they rarely leave the table that I'm playing at, and are usually tailored to the specific player and not intended to be balanced for overall play, or even sold to NPCs.

I've watched the proceedings of RPGSS since the first contest, because my husband and a friend of ours each placed twice (although once was as an alternate) and I wanted to support them. I never entered before because I don't consider myself a game designer, I never had an idea for a wondrous item, and most importantly I do not actually want to win the contest, I have no desire to write an adventure module.

Unfortunately they changed the round one rules from wondrous items to arms & armor, rods, staves and rings, which I did have an idea for, so I entered without really thinking about the fact that I still have no desire to win the contest or write an adventure. If I place in the Top 32, I'm not even sure what I will do. I may just lose my mind and go for it.

Star Voter Season 8

I've been following the contest and playing/running Pathfinder since it first came out. I've considered entering for a few years now but always talked myself out of it due to school or lack of ideas. After entering and doing well in a monster design contest earlier this year, I realized I should really just go for it; while I didn't have as much time to work on my idea as I would have liked, I've entered and that's already a step up from the last few years.

Star Voter Season 8

Another first-timer here, to the boards (obviously, since this is my first post :P) as well as to the contest.

My gaming group convinced me to enter something. It was my first time designing anything other than an adventure for the group (and to call my adventure-making process "designing" is a lot more credit than I deserve). I don't expect to win, but finding out how much I enjoyed the process is something of a win in itself, for me.

Good luck everyone! Looking forward to seeing what you all came up with.

She made Top 16.

Whee! I played 3.0 and 3.5 for a decade and started playing Pathfinder a few years ago, but I didn't delve too deeply into it. My wife and I have gotten progressively more interested in the system over the past 8 months. This is the first RPGSS contest since I first heard of RPGSS, so I entered! I'm not expecting to get anywhere, personally, but I am looking forward to seeing a lot of awesome entries and inspiration from all of you.

As an occasional amateur (very occasional! And very amateur.) game designer, this isn't purely new territory to me, but a lot of the restrictions are. I had three or four ideas that I discovered weren't new, and were already done in some fashion or other by Kobold Press! Even outside of RPGSS, the competition to be original seems fierce. Small, but fierce.
