Why Do Dragons Serve Dragotha?

Age of Worms Adventure Path

I mean, dragons are supposed to be smart. How does it serve Brazzemal's or Ilthane's interests to bring about a future in which they're killed and infested with Kyuss worms? Are they being tricked? Does Dragotha have some sort of magic dragon-controlling powers?

Some people/dragons just want to watch the world burn?

I don't think Illthane knew the full story, but I have not read this AP in a while. If Brazzemal was the dragon who shows up during the siege on the giant city then I don't remember him having any reasons written into the story. Maybe he was promised riches or an exemption(from the worms), or both. If he felt like Dragotha and Kyuss could not be stopped he might have felt that he should fight for the winning team if he has to live in a craptastic world.

Actually, most of those dragons have reasons, but it's stuff like "wealth" or "excuse for slaughter". I dunno, it seems a bit dodgy to me. One of them is actively shooting for demilichdom, and the other is explicitly only there because Dragotha scares him, but the rest don't make a ton of sense to me.

Sovereign Court

With Ilthane I think she did know the whole story and was nuts enough to want it to happen. She possibly even had thoughts of being Dragothas consort?

With Braz I think he had been previously dead and Dragotha got him back up. So loyalty out of fear, plus greed for riches and power are the motivations there. The other 3 named dragons work for Braz and prolly have no idea about his real motivations.

The Exchange

It might be they are all in the same boat as Dragotha was, being they are out of favour with Tiamat, and have thus taken refuge with Kyuss.

Sovereign Court

Actually, as I am about to start this book on saturday I have reread closer and have seen why each of the dragons are present.

Necrozyte is using Dragotha to gain power to kill Tiamat

Braz is helping out of loyalty for Dragotha rezzing him

Ilthane is just nuts

Verimox is scared of Dragotha and is only there out of fear.

Xyzanth is present because Dragotha promised him slaughter on an immense scale.

Of all of those, I suspect only Ilthane had any inkling of what was really going on.

Remember that the motivations of many of these dragons will never be made clear to the players. We agonize over them because we're the DM's. However, many times the players will just assume that the dragon has a good reason to be there, get deaded, and then get looted.

Though, I often give my major villains the bonus feat Expository Backstory. As a free action they may expound as much of their motivations as they want. This does not count against their limit for the number of free actions usuable per round. Such exposition may last long enough for stars to burn out and still fit into a 6-second round.
