We're under 40 hours left now.

I understand the desire to check and recheck your entry, but the site has been having a LOT of downtime lately. So much so that Paizo even posted a warning on the subject.

Please don't wait until right at the last hour tomorrow to submit, because if that is the middle of another 6 hours of downtime, then you're O-U-T!

I submitted my entry and then had a minor panic as I realized I will be travelling for two weeks right after the holidays. I relaxed when I realized that I come back a couple of days before round 2 starts. Perfect!

So, is a 52 year old getting a full set of X-Wing miniatures for the X-Wing miniatures game really sad or really cool? >.<

Hmm, for description we could have something like... (and this is deliberately passive, bad and downright awful...)

This fully automatic hand crossbow could fire 20 shots per round!

Unfortunately, it always jams after the first shot is fired.

Fortunately, you can always fire first before initiatives are called.

Unfortunately, if you fail a straight DC 10 luck roll, you will always go last as you extricate yourself from the tangle of crossbow wire and misfired bolts.

Grin.

p.s. The Slave 1 miniature was the killer - I could only get it from a "rip you a new one" collector site? With postage, it ended up being just over 100 quid (or 160(ish) US dollars). For one mini, just one >.<

Cry.

Fortunately, I had finished my Christmas Shopping, so it wasn't so bad. Just the wrapping left to do.

Really cool!

(Said the 35 year old who owns over 40 X-wing miniatures, including the new YT-2400 and the VT-49 Decimator).

Anthony, I need to send you a Vassal tutorial so we can grab a game or two while voting.

Big guns range 5 - everything else range 3 - bad news tie pilots, you have to get into its firing range before it is in yours :P

Then again, when you are in range, it's like hitting a barn door the size of Texas...

Ok, who rolled the "1" ? :D

Star Voter Season 8

Anyone into the Star Trek miniatures game? Anyone?

*sees self to the door*

Orloff, I'd collect those, too ... but only after I glutted myself on SW. There are some *marvelous* Trek ship designs - I'm a fan of the Reliant and the "Federation tug" style, as well as the Cardassian ships, the Runabout, the Defiant, and whatever the Maquis ship from Voyager is called. Amongst others.

Then I would have them fight each other in mixed fleets...

...and it would be glorious!

"Sender's Remorse" is pretty common at all levels of game writing. A project's deadline is always at some point, and it's not unusual for me to look at something of mine that's already in print and think "Oh, I should have done this instead."

You submitted. That means you're already putting yourself in pretty rarified company. Congratulations!

If I don't make the top 32 this year I'll know it's because I didn't go with the stripped down version of my item.

I'm hoping fortune favored the bold and the risks I took pay off.

(Intentionally vague it's another Superstar Forum Game.)

Yes I waited for the last minute to make my item and had a great idea for another one as I was about to hit send. Fact is, I only came up with this new concept last night (before hitting send was realizing it could be a superstar submission) so it's not like I would have used it anyway if I'd done this dealie over the weekend like I intended.

Star Voter Season 6, Star Voter Season 7, Star Voter Season 8

Well I didn't wait until the last minute (submitted with 3 minutes to go!) but I've had to drag my item kicking and screaming to life (it started as my Wondrous Item idea and wouldn't go away!) and its taken until the last minute to get it right.

Now the waiting...

Good luck everyone!!!

I entered, with some time to spare, but a lot closer to the deadline than I'd have liked.
The shorter timeframe really took me by surprise this year; I was away from the boards a few days, and by the time I caught up with the message that RPGSS had begun, it was already over the halfway point.

Me too. I almost didn't enter this year because I didn't think I'd have enough time to formulate an idea together. But I ended up making my submission an hour before the deadline. Inspiration is a fickle mistress.

I on the other hand was not bothered by the shorter time frame... my long, considered, tinkered with, play tested, tinkered with some more, polished, submissions from previous years never amounted to much... so this year I decided before hand that I was going to think on my feet... Therefore, I pulled my submission out of my ass over the course of about 20 minutes yesterday afternoon. Let's see if spontaneity gets me further than forethought in this case.

This is what happened to me, too. Especially annoying because I *love* the Wondrous Item I had planned to submit.

That said, I'm happy with the item I did enter, and I doubt three extra days would have improved it. Although maybe then I would have caught the minor(?) error I found five minutes after I hit submit.

I know how you feel. Worked on a single item (well, with two variations) for four days, then realized why it definitely wasn't Superstar-worthy and had to start over from scratch. Today.

Got it iron out, proofread, and submitted with 8 minutes to spare...

...and then noticed I had made a pretty egregious typing error about two hours later. Whoops. At least I'm still very happy with how it turned out.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 16 aka jeffh

I entered literally at the last minute. It was an item I really liked the concept of and was trying to do for my own game, but some of the advantages I envisioned it having didn't translate well there and it gradually dawned on me that it was a better Pathfinder idea than it was a Fantasy Infinity idea. The Pathfinder version was much easier to write up, though I had to drop some of the fluff for word count reasons. (Minor bit of info about the item edited out - didn't realize that was against the rules, sorry!) The only part that was hard was pricing it, which I'm still not sure I nailed.

Scarab Sages

Flavor's fine, insofar as describing what the item looks like, and how its powers manifest.
But not when it tries to tell a story about the creator and/or previous owners.

The point of the contest is to make items that could be crafted by future NPCs in future products, or the PCs themselves. Not to set the canon in stone, that the Axe of Screeching Riffs can only be wielded by Dread Lord Manglespleen van Halen, of Earsplitter Castle.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 16 aka jeffh

The bit I dropped basically consisted of explaining what *sort* of person is most likely to make my item, and why it might be significant to them. No detailed backstory, just a minimal suggestion for one way it could fit into the world.

Dedicated Voter Season 8

Tiny gods, but I'm glad I'm not the only one that decided to think on their feet. I kept reading about people tinkering with their ideas and thinking "well crap. I've had this idea for months, but I just wrote it up, double checked some rules, completely forgot how to format forum posts, and hit submit."

All that said, I'm happy with it.

That sounds like something that won't hurt you then - older hands have had "no backstory" beaten into them over the years, so it might even be a good thing.

One of the lessons that I have learnt is to trust the GMs and Players, give them the magic, leave it to them to work the rest out.

It sounds like you have done this (by accident maybe), so all cool.

Well, at least I'm not the only one who completely missed the first 3+ days of this year. I checked the boards for anything around the 7th or 8th went crazy about delivering exam assignments and suddenly it was the 14th and there we go. As it is I ended up submitting later than I should have liked, on the day of passing an exam I had been coiled up in for most of the preparation time. Here's hoping that counts for something?

Still, for once my idea isn't competing with a dozen other after the send and the wondrous items I wanted to make and the three other ideas that I was supposed to used... none of them really feels quite so unique.

I think the short deadline and the twist added on top of it, will have left some out due to simply missing it or time constraints. But I think it is a challenging experience to work inside deadlines like that. And honestly, when 3 pages a day is a necessary at universities, what's 300 words?

I just did realize I didn't third time, through grammar and spell check and remove incidental passives (has anyone else found passives all over to be a side effect of academic writing?). Have to go do that. Even if it doesn't matter now. And sketch a handful of maps. Somewhere in between the next exam and now.

Honestly, having my doubts about the time viability of submitting. Sigh.

Well, I hope no one ended up trying to submit just that one minute past time. Voting soon now. Well, so late today (18th) that it might as well be tomorrow in this part of the word.

Maybe that's why textbooks and [poorly written] RPG sourcebooks are such a chore to read. There's just no action!

Oh yeah. It drives me nuts, particularly because I have two English brains, one for my creative writing major and one for my professional/technical writing minor. But yeah, I find passives everywhere now.
