Re-exploring

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

I'm still somewhat new to this so I have what may look like simple questions.

1)How many times can you re-explore a location? That is if I have Blessings and Allies, could I re-explore 3 or 4 times?

2) When other players play cards to help me (esp in an encounter or acquisition of an item), do they have to be at my location or can all of the other players play cards to help me)? That is can each other player play a weapon card to help me against a monster.

Thanks to all of you. Merry Christmas.

1. There is no limit other than there being cards to be explored and ways to explore.

2. The card itself will include any restrictions. If it doesn't mention location, then location doesn't matter.

But there aren't a lot of weapon cards that can help another character defeat a monster. So in that case, you are probably talking about having to play a bow to add to a check at another location, so in that case, location matters because the bow weapons say "at another location."

Merry Christmas right back at you.

Everything Hawk said, but remember that only the character attempting the check can play a card or power that determines the skill for the check (the ones that say "For your combat check"), and only one such card or power may be played, even if they are different types of cards.

It's important to keep in mind the maxim "cards do what they say, cards don't do what they don't say."

So, if it says "a check" or "any check", it means any check, by any character. If it says "your check", it means your character's check, and only that. If it says "at your location" or "at another locations", if means exactly that, if it doesn't say any of these, it means at any location. And so forth. Just look at the text.

Ah, ok so as long as there are cards to re-explore, I can keep re-exploring and re-exploring using several Blessings that I may have in my hand? As for playing cards to assist me, what I was referring to was players playing cards to assist me in a check or battle (sorry I wasn't clear). For example, if I'm checking to get through a barrier or open a chest, can several players play cards to help me get through the barrier or open the chest? Or, more to the point, let's say I encounter a monster, villain, henchman, etc. and I am using a longsword, can other members of my party who are not at my location give me a throwing ax and another player give me a spear and so on? Keeping in mind Zaister's important maxim reminder that if their weapons cards don't specify a location, I can use them at my location regardless of where the other members of my party are.

If that ax and spear say they can be used on other players, yes. You can't use their "For your combat check" to add to someone else, because it isn't their combat check, and only one of those types of powers can be played each check. However, some weapons do have powers to assist other players.

You've got a couple of things that would prevent something like that.

First, and maybe this is just an accidental use of the wrong term, but they can't give you cards at that point. Giving a card to another character is a specific part of the turn, and has very particular rules. So, unless you have another card that you can play that allows you to give cards outside of that part of the turn, you can't give card.

Second, those cards you mention all say "for your combat check". So other players can't play them on your combat check, because your combat check isn't there combat check. i.e. If you are making a combat check and I have a Throwing Axe, I can't play it because the power on the Throwing Axe says "For your combat check." And it isn't my combat check, so it doesn't apply.

Third, because all those cards say "for your combat check" they are examples of cards the determine which skill you are using for the check. And the rules say you can only play 1 card to determine the skill. So even if you had all 3 of those weapons, you could only play 1 of them.

Fourth, during a check (or a step of an encounter) each player can only play 1 card of each type. So even if all the previous thing wasn't true, you could still only play 1 weapon.

So, if you are attempting a combat check:
1. Every player could play a blessing to add to your check, regardless of their location.
2. Players at other locations could play cards like the shortbow, which have a power to add to a combat check at another location.
3. Other players at your location could play cards like Allying Dart +1, which adds to a combat at the location of the character playing it.
4. If you were making a Strength check via your weapon, any/every player could play the spell Strength, regardless of their location.

So, the basic rules are:

One card of each type by each player for the check (or other step of an encounter).
Only one card can be played to determine which skill you are using for the check.
No one can defeat, acquire, evade, succeed or fail your encounter or check for you. So someone else can't play a card like Caltrops if you encounter a monster. Nor can they play a card like Crown of Charisma if you are making a Diplomacy check.
Other than that, follow the instructions/limits on the cards.

I hope that helps. Have fun.

Excellent gentlemen. Many thanks.
