ROTRL Advice

Rise of the Runelords

Hello everyone I'm taking over GMing for our group's Rise of the Runelords game since my friend who was GMing before doesn't have the time to read through the book due to his job. I'm open to any advice anyone would be willing to offer and questions on mechanics. I'll probably drop in from time to time with another question and any answer/advice would be appreciated.

For my first question what would the mechanics of the Hagfish Challenge be? I know it would require a fort save(s) but a DC isn't listed in the Anniversary version of it(as far as I know).

Again any advice for the question or just general advice would be helpful and appreciated.

I made it a DC 18 fort save - poison based giving dwarves a bonus to the save.

Consequently my dwarven PC now has a drink named after him... because he now likes it with a little 'slime' added rofl.

I sent my players a video of what a hagfish actually does to water (google it) so they'd understand just what the dwarf drank.

The Exchange

I begin a run of RotR this Sunday, and am scouring the boards for advice as well. The Burnt Offerings sticky has been immensively helpful, as have a lot of individual posts.

The one thing I'm doing, and I wonder if there is feedback from others that have tried it, it running Session Zeroes with each of the PCs, to introduce them to Sandpoint and a couple of NPCs on the day before the Swallowtail Festival. I've run one so far, with others scheduled later this week before our Sunday game. It went ok, but I'm loathe to run anything resembling combat before the PCs get together.

I too have someone who is going for the Hagfish challenge, and took that campaign trait. I'm considering making it two saves, one to get it down and another to keep from puking it up. It seems that the DCs people have used are all over the map, I'm considering the 18-20 range. If he doesn't make it, it will just give him something to shoot for, right?

For the Hagfish challenge I used three consecutive saving throws.

The first one was a Will save to even get it past one's lips.

The second was a Fortitude save to drink it all (at which point the character would win the current prize purse).

The third was another Fortitude save to keep it down (vomiting the stuff back up would give the winner fewer bragging points, but would not actually annull the win).

The DCs were high, with each successive one being higher than the preceding one. I'm AFB/notes at the moment, so I can't specify the actual DC values.

The two Fortitude saves were poison-based, so anyone with bonuses vs. poison could use them. (Dwarves and alchemists come to mind.)

Keep in mind the Hagfish Challenge is meant to be a locals trolling tourists sort of deal. While they're impressed when someone wins, it's mostly supposed to be a "Hah, look at what we got this rube from out of town to do!" sort of thing.

I think Bellona's system covers it pretty well, though.
