Hey Guys
So over at Geek and Sundry they are having themselves a little fundraiser!
now i hear what you are saying
Why should i Care ?
I think you should and here is why
Wil Wheaton and team at TableTop are doing an amazing Job at building up the board gaming community (look at Tabletop day as a small example of this) and exposing a wide audience to the fun of what playing a board game can be.
Now Imagine the effect they might have if we let their talents free on the RPG industry. They are a true entry point for a hobby which we know has a very large potential to grow!
As a community we want people to discover and fall in love with Tabletop Role-playing, and we as a community have a great opportunity to get behind a group who is able to give fantastic, enthusiastic, professional exposure to the games and technologies we love.
If they hit the Million dollar mark they do this! they make this happen!
Have a look at www.ilovetabletop.com and see if you agree
Also watch the Syrinscape videos and see what you think
Let's support the TableTop Season 3 Fundraiser - with a special message from Know Direction
Let's support TableTop - with a message from the Dicestormers
Please discuss i want to hear what you think
Thanks and sorry for the long post

I thoroughly enjoy Tabletop and they do a great job with board and card games explaining the mechanics and you get a good feel for the way a particular game flows. I find the banter between Wil and his guests quite entertaining myself.
I liked the two part episode they did with Chris Pramas where he ran a short adventure for the Dragon Age RPG. I'd like to see at least one or two RPGs get reviewed per season to give a good feel for the mechanics of the game, how characters are created, the game setting and so on. Games I'd like to see them do are: Star Wars from FFG (either Edge of the Empire or Age of Rebellion), Call of Cthulhu, DC Adventures/Mutants & Masterminds and Shadowrun 5E. Although depending on timing, they clearly should get Mike Mearls, Chris Perkins or some of the other D&D Next team to run a game with the final product.

I really, really hate Wil Wheaton.
Wow, that *is* harsh. Wil Wheaton is a very cool guy and is very much 'one of us' if you will. He's a D&D fan, he's a Pathfinder fan and he's very funny, honest and down to earth dude
I think you might want to consider reserving your hate for people that actually deserve it ...

Some people hate him forever for Wesley Crusher. He was pretty annoying and hammy on the PAX shows to be honest, so I pray he doesn't act like that. I think everyone who games and their mother already knows about Tabletop and they're fundraising for Season 3.
He has not announced what game he wants to play, but for some reason I really don't think it will be Pathfinder. It's a more complicated system and his storyteller type stuff is usually more basic. He shys away from too complicated simply for viewer ease. He already has an association with WotC so I'm kind of skeptical it would be PF. It would probably be some odd, horror/Cthulhu game.

I've heard of Tabletop, but never watched it, since I tend to just pick up any boardgames I see that spark an interest anyway.
I don't really have any opinions on Wil Wheaton one way or another, I just don't come across him that much. Wesley Crusher annoyed me, but that was a long time ago, and I don't hold the character against him.
Based on what I've heard though, it sounds like he is doing a lot to help get gaming culture more exposure, which can only be a good thing. The more new blood we have the better. I know I was surprised when a few of the guys at work actually knew what I was talking about when it came to some games the other day (I'm basically the only tabletop gamer in my team), turned out they'd seen it on tabletop, and were actually interested in giving some games a go at some point. So, you know, pretty positive success there.

It is widely reported (and verified by Wil himself) that he spent 10+ years after TNG basically being a terrible, pretentious, snotty brat. Coincidentally, he totally projects that image in all of his characters. Plus his voice is super annoying.

Moving back onto topic do you guys see this having an impact on our community?
Not measurably, no.
Would you watch it
Absolutely not. Watching people play board games (or RPGs) could not possibly be more boring.
and could see people being introduce into rpgs through a show like this?
I am constantly amazed at the loony things people out there on the internet get amused by, so I have little doubt that some people would be introduced into RPGs by this. But, not measurably, IMO.
In any case, I would never donate to such a thing (not that they need me - they already passed their mark) as I have zero interest in "promoting" the hobby or industry (that's business' jobs, not consumers).
Glad other people will find it interesting, though.

I watch it occasionally. I do think it will have a small impact on RPG's.
Tabletop delves into that area of games that crosses over from board games to RPG's. They played Resistance on an episode, which is a bluffing game and certainly has some roleplaying elements (you literally have to take on the role of a character if you're a spy as you lie to your friends). They also played Fiasco, which I think is a pretty easy introductory game for roleplaying (very light rules, can play a game in a genre that's familiar to whoever is playing).
Their International Tabletop Day isn't huge, but it is a thing. I didn't go to my local game store this year, but I went last year and there was a good turn out. It had a nice mix of board games and RPG's, so there were definitely people there who hadn't played RPG's who at very least got to see other people play them.
It's not going to be a huge explosion of players, I really think RPG's will forever be a niche market, but it is helping provide exposure, so the people who are interested are having an easier time finding it.

Necroing the thread to point out that, not only is the TV show coming out, but there's going to be a game and setting sourcebook associated with it.
And if you check out the press release for that game, you'll see a couple names that Paizoans ought to recognize...
