That's not the test, you're looking for. You need to find something that enables what you want to do.

There's nothing in the rules that says dead people can't talk normally either. So you can see the weakness in the logic you're using.

The Speak With Dead spell only mentions it having a language. The Circlet gives the animal a language.

It works.

So... who's wearing that circlet? 'cause Dead creatures can't - they're objects.

The "creatureness" of dead creatures is a bit fuzzy. I couldn't say whether this would work at a particular table.
