RPG System for kids?

Gamer Life General Discussion

Hi all,

I mean to introduce my 12 year old daughter to the vast world of RPGs soon-ish, but I'm not sure what system to use. Personally I haven't played anything but Pathfinder since like 2009 so I'm a bit out of touch with the "crowd".

Back in my days I started with the first edition of "The Dark Eye"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Eye
in german. It was really simple, a bit like the first D&D, so the perfect introduction to RPs. The need for more detailed rules grew slowly and the industry as such luckily met my pace nicely.

I was considering buying her the Pathfinder Basic box (in german).
Does anyone have any better ideas?

(yes, it needs to be german, but let THAT not deter you, for now, that's my problem mostly.)

Any and all feedback welcome.

There is Hero Kids in all its non-German, ages 4-10 glory.

Also of note is Faery's Tale co-authored by Christina Stiles (freelancer who has worked in various RPG systems for Kobold Press, Green Ronin, Misfit Studios, Rogue/Super Genius Games, Paizo)

There are others* - though these also tend to be for much younger kids. If your daughter reads and is interested in fantasy, I'm sure the Beginner Box is well suited to her level of comprehension and interest.

* Adventures in Oz by F. Douglas Wall

The Princes Kingdom by Clinton R Nixon

Mermaid Adventures by Eloy Lasanta/Third Eye Games

Fate Accelerated.

Hi,

thanks guys, there is some great stuff in there.
Might want to add, I'd not be the one running the games (i's logistics, we don't live in the same area anymore), but my stepdad would, who ran our games back in the days. So, essentialy, newbie GM running a newbie group for newbie players. :D
Makes the (german) PF Box look like a viable pick, does it?

Liberty's Edge

I'd recommend Icons Assembled. Everyone in the group (aside from the GM, who created the game) had never heard of it before. We created characters and played through a session with no trouble whatsoever.

If you can find a copy on eBay, there was a Pokemon rpg put out by Wizards at the same time they released 3.0 or thereabouts. It was supposed to be part of a line of such, but it didn't sell all that well.

is it kids friendly setting your looking for or simple rules system, cause I would suggest feng shui action movie roleplaying for a simple system, two different colored d6s is all you need.

Maybe, if you want something online, try the developing Storium storyboard game. This doesn't even need to be just for kids either, its what ever the players want. Just a suggestion.

QAGS.

Sovereign Court

I started with GURPS when I was 12. Then moved on to AD&D and then D&D, Alternity, CP 2020 and others.

Maybe you don't have to coddle your kids. Play pathfinder with them. Show them the good stuff right away.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

My son started with 3.0 at 6 and caught on right away. It's fine to start them off with a simpler system, but don't sell them short. They're often a lot smarter and more savvy than we realize!

Artist James Stowe made a game just for kids called Sidekick quests .

Some free character sheets and a 99 cents quick start guide. The artwork is really cute. It's D&D for kids.

Regardless of age, if you want to introduce someone into RPGs who has literally no experience with them, you want to introduce them into the tabletop concept itself, and let the rules be background. To do this, simpler rules = better.

Savage Worlds.

I love me some Pathfinder, but for newbies, SW takes the cake. It's just too frickin' easy.
