Does a penalty to hit from a buckler apply to CMB / CMD?

Rules Questions

Self-explanatory subject.

CMD, no. That's just affected by bonuses and penalties to AC.

CMB, yes. "Combat maneuvers are attack rolls, so you must roll for concealment and take any other penalties that would normally apply to an attack roll."

But, only if that CMB roll used the arm wearing the buckler.

So, Grapple checks? Yes, because grappling requires both hands (usually).

Disarm checks? Not if your weapon and buckler are on different limbs.

Etc.

Presumably, the CMBer is wielding a buckler, and using a two-handed weapon, so doing a trip, disarm or sunder with a two-handed weapon while wielding a buckler would take the penalty, just like taking a normal attack would.

Sczarni

Indeed.

Of course, I am still confused as to whether an archer takes the buckler penalty or not. Now, it is fairly obvious that they lose the buckler shield bonus to AC when shooting their bow, until their next turn, but do they take a penalty to hit, as though wielding a two handed weapon?

Sczarni

No.

And neither do gunslingers.

It is a bit confusing because of all of the language following this entry, but no. There is no penalty when using a bow while having a buckler equipped.

You can also use your shield arm to wield a weapon (whether you are using an off-hand weapon or using your off hand to help wield a two-handed weapon), but you take a –1 penalty on attack rolls while doing so. This penalty stacks with those that may apply for fighting with your off hand and for fighting with two weapons. In any case, if you use a weapon in your off hand, you lose the buckler's AC bonus until your next turn. You can cast a spell with somatic components using your shield arm, but you lose the buckler's AC bonus until your next turn. You can't make a shield bash with a buckler.

So, does firing a bow or musket constitute using a weapon in your off-hand for losing the buckler's bonus to AC?

Also, even if you didn't fire on your turn, would taking an AoO with Snap Shot/Improved Snap Shot lose you that AC bonus, as well?

Yeah. Basically, if you do anything with your Buckler that doesn't constitute trying to protect yourself with it (cast a spell, make a melee attack, make a ranged attack), you lose the AC bonus until your next turn. This would include making AoO.
