Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2008 Top 4; Contributor; Publisher, Legendary Games

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, so rather than Wormy's usual inquiries into the terrible and terrifying, let's take a moment to think and to thank our favorite fantasy authors, moviemakers, and other creative folks out there. What are some of YOUR favorite fantasy media that you are thankful for?

You could list them by category:

Movie

Book

Comic

RPG adventure

Other RPG product

and, of course, 3rd party product!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Fox News...but Seriously Books ..first and greatest love

Liberty's Edge

Tim Burton's 1989 film "Batman."

Sovereign Court

Movie: The Dark Crystal
Book: The Magic Cave (children's book, but it had an impact on me!)
Video Game: Myth: the Fallen Lords. The narrator before each mission had a haunting voice that still gives me the chills.
RPG Adventure: The Living Greyhawk campaign. It's when I really started to appreciate all the work that goes into these games.
Other RPG Product: West End Games Star Wars (D6). I ran a huge campaign all through college and although it is most certainly sci-fi, there are plenty of parallels to The Force and magic.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Movie: LoTR/Hobbit.

Book: Oz - that was my gateway to Fantasy, followed by LoTR/Hobbit, Stephen R Donaldson's work, Dresden files.

Comic- Kurt Busiek. He showed everyone that you could have interesting personal stories focusing on characterization and adult writing, while still maintaining the "Superheroes are bright and shiny" semi silver age feel.

RPG adventure- to be honest nothing comes to mind

Other RPG product: Hero System 5th edition - had a long running Fantasy game, and is just such a great system. Pathfinder is #2, by a hair.

3rd party product- not picking out any specific product, but in a lot of ways Paizo's support of 3rd Party Publishers is wonderful (praising them, and featuring them on store blog) - then add to that the community here that work with each other; The Mythic Mania Kickstarter as a prime example, but Cerulean Seas using DSP Psionics as another. The respect for each others' product, and working together to just make a better game experience for everyone. This is a lot of what I think Ryan Dancy was looking for when creating the OGL. Of course all the wonderful stuff that the different publishers do - Legendary's stuff that build from Ultimate Campaign, and AP plug ins, RGG Crunch, especially things like the Talented line, the old Archtype books and Magisters - sort of deconstructing Pathfinder and opening up options. Dreamscarred bringing back a lot of beloved sub systems and improving them (Psionics, Incarna, Initiators) Kobold's excellent work all around - just to name some off the top of my head. Really this community of publishers and fans is part of what makes the Pathfinder experience such a good thing. And really that is what I am most thankful for when it comes to gaming.

This.

1. Books (a primary love): Lord Of The Rings is and always will be my favorite. Runners up: Zelazny's Amber Chronicles (Corwin is my favorite fantasy character ever, although...), Dresden Files (a current favorite, but probably one that will be re-read many times, Harry has possibility of beating Corwin for No.1).

2. Movie - The Gooonies (forever and always), then Labyrinth, then LotR

3. Comic - Asterix. I find superhero comics not interesting, but Hellboy is definitely a love at first horns.

4. Computer Game - Baldurs Gate (1 for nostalgia, 2 for the best game ever), Diablo (all 3) and Heroes of M&M 3.

5. Gaming stuff - no real favorite books but two worlds - Forgotten Realms and Kobold's Midgard

I'm thankful for a lot of these (many that started me off when I was younger):

1. Books: The Prydain Chronicles

2. Movies: Lord of the Rings (but also stuff my Dad showed me when I was young, including such wonderful schlock as Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger, Red Sonja, The Sword and the Sorcerer, Conan...)

3. Comics: was never a comic fan...

4. Video Games: the Final Fantasy series and Chrono Trigger

5. Gaming stuff: GDQ1-7 Queen of the Spiders

6. 3rd Party Product: Necromancer Games (and Frog God Games), with Rappan Athuk figuring prominently

There are way too many to list, so to give just a few...

Movie - "The Yellow Submarine" - surreal horrific fantasy

Book - "American Gods"

Comic - "Hellblazer" and everything by Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman

RPG adventure - I write my own adventures.

Other RPG product - The Holmes version boxed set of D&D that got me started way back in the late 70s.

Video games: Fire Emblem, Zelda, Okami, Halo, Assassins Creed, ect
