Pathfinder Society slow progression and half XP

Pathfinder Society

The Exchange 3/5

I started playing PFS Organized Play back in June or July of this year. Already my primary character, Trade Prince Velarrio Ileor-Blakros the Faceless is 1xp away from 8th level and a total of 4 levels away from his retirement.

I've heard of people talking about the slow progression and was wondering just how does it work? When many of the sheets I've seen are usually 1xp gain, how do you get half xp? I've had a GM tell me that there are no things like half xp (as I had another GM I game with regularly give me a 1.5xp on an Emerald Spire level because I missed half of the level).

I would like to play Velarrio a bit longer, and if it means that I could potentially play other characters I enjoy just as long, I would like to learn more about it.

You are playing older scenarios and that why you are not seeing the boxes with out of tier gold and slow progression check boxes at the top right of your chronicle sheet. Let your GM know that you are going slow progression. He will adjust accordingly. You can only start slow progression at the beginning of a new level and must level out. Then next at 9-1 you can decide if you are going to go another level at slow or normal. Congrats on making 8th with your first character by the way :D

Taken from the players guide to pfs on page 21.

"At character creation and
each time your character gains a level, you decide if you
would like your character to be on the standard or slow
advancement track for the entirety of that level."

"Slow Advancement: In the slow advancement track, for
every scenario that your Pathfinder successfully completes,
you receive 1/2 XP.
The choice of advancement track is personal to your
character, so it is entirely possible to have characters in
the same adventuring party advancing at different rates.
In both advancement rates, your Pathfinder levels up
each time he acquires 3 XP. You may not continue to
play your character at the lower level once he has earned
enough XP to gain a level."

The answer to this and many other PFS questions lies in the PFS guide to organized play. (A Free download)

Page 21 might be helpful to look at.

Silver Crusade 2/5

For a normal scenario on slow progression, you will get .5 experience, and if you succeed at all missions, 1 prestige point. You will also get 1/2 of the gold awarded for the scenario. Day job checks will be normal, and typically, you will expend about as much consumables as normal.

So, you get to play six scenarios at each level, each giving you half the prestige and gold as normal. It's really that simple, and the GM who told you there was no such thing as half an xp was incorrect.

You do have to start it when you first play at a level. No starting in the middle.

All of this is in the Pathfinder Society Guide to Organized Play.

The organized play guide is a free download under player and gm resources.
Scenarios are 1 xp, .5 xp for slow progression. Modules are 3 xp, 1.5 xp for slow progression.
Slow progression -- you decide on slow at beginning of a lvl. Cant switch to slow if already played once or twice at the current lvl.
There are adjustments for xp Depending on how much your pc made it through.

"Playing a module or sanctioned content from an
Adventure Path from beginning to end earns a character
3 XP and 4 Prestige Points if that character is on the
medium advancement track, or 1-1/2 XP and 2 Prestige
Points for characters on the slow advancement track.
If a character dies and is brought back to life, the
GM must determine the rewards for that character.
The minimum possible reward is 0 gp, 1 XP and 1 PP
on the medium advancement track or 0 gp 1/2 XP, and
1/2 Prestige Point on the slow advancement track. If a
character participates in more than 2/3 of the module, she
should receive the full rewards. GMs and active players
are encouraged to hasten the return of any characters
waiting to be raised from the dead.
Players who do not complete each game session earn 1/3
fewer gold pieces, 1 less XP and 1 less Prestige Point for
each session missed. This also applies to players who join
later sessions; they receive 1/3 fewer gold pieces, 1 fewer
XP and Prestige Point for each session missed. In both
cases, players earn a minimum of 1/3 gold pieces, 1 XP and
1 Prestige Point. If a character earns more XP than she
needs to reach her next level, she may not choose to switch
advancement tracks at the new level earned."

Please ask your GM to adjust the XP to a whole number since it was ran on normal. Or you can ask a VO to do it and explain. More than likely he is a newer GM and may not be aware of the rules

Check over the prestige and gold and see if you have gotten the correct amount. Make sure you include the GM that ran this for you so he is not blind sided. Any help with Rules-Fu is appreciated and encouraged. We all forget at some point :D
