How does the Scarred Witch Doctor's mask work?

Rules Questions

Grand Lodge

It is my understanding that a Scarred Witch Doctor's fetish mask acts in all ways as witch's familiar. Does this mean that the mask grants Alertness when worn? Does it have the Empathic Link? Any of the other special abilities? Does it have intelligence? Can it communicate?

You missed the 'for the purpose of...' bit of the quote. It only emulates the spell stuff about a witches familiar, none of the other things (alertness, link, etc). It is not intelligent and cannot communicate.

Grand Lodge

yep. just reread it again. bummer.

What item slot properties can I add to it using Craft Wondrous at level 5? Does it count as a Eyes, Head, or Headband slot?

Masks are in the Head slot. So I presume it can mimic any Head slot wondrous item.

So for the purposes of the mask learning spells, what int score does it use?

It appears you always use the Witch's int score, not the familiar's, so the scarred witch doctor is no different in that regard.

Grand Lodge

Well, in this case, it would be the Witch's Con score.

A bit more vague, as is the part where the mask is supposed to eat the ashes of a scroll to learn a new spell.

most people i've seen comments from say that the mask can only do the basic spell stuff, but this last line seems to suggest that it should be able to do at least some of the others as well.

i think maybe RAI is that the mask's special ability is the boost to healing and intimidation (where it would be +3 fly for a bat) and that the other abilities should level with the witch.

this makes me think that the mask is in the process of becoming an intelligent item as a result of being constantly used to channel magic and will learn to communicate with its master a little at a time. the one that seems the most difficult is "animals of its own kind" which could be other intelligent objects.

as a GM i'd probably rule this was okay, as a player of the witch i'm definitely in favour of adding those bonuses.

BTW, anyone know what the hardness of a mask is? the entry talks about it potentially being destroyed, but there's no hardness or HP listed.

Until it's actually upgraded to become a magic item it's likely either bone (hardness 5, hp unknown I'd guess maybe 3/inch since bone is fragile), leather (hardness 2, 5hp/inch thick), or wood (hardness 5,10hp/inch thick). Of these, the wood mask is the only one likely to be a full inch thick.

"a scarred witch doctor forms a bond with a wooden mask". So it has to be wood. I suggest Greenwood as it repairs itself if you water it.
