When an order is placed or we are preparing it for our shipping queue, an authorization may be placed on the payment method. An authorization is a transaction that lets your financial institution know, "Hey, we're about to charge the card for this amount! The card information is correct and money is there, right?" The bank gets this message and since they expect us to be charging the amount we authorized for, places a hold on those funds so they can't be spent elsewhere by accident. When we ship the package, the authorized funds that are being held are settled. This process doesn't always go perfectly smoothly though. During a busy time when we can't physically ship all the orders we have quickly enough, the temporary authorization might expire before we can ship the order and settle the charge. The hold is lifted and the amount that was being held becomes available. As long as that money is still there when we go to process the order again, everything should be fine.
