Are there any good expansions to the wordcasting system?

Product Discussion

The wordcasting system, as interesting as it is, seems to have been slightly left to rot by Paizo. This gives me a small thematic problem in a campaign I wish to run.

I want to run a stone age campaign, I haven't decided on paleolithic (old stone age) or neolithic (new stone age) yet, but I believe paleolithic.

I want to give the idea that arcane magic is as of yet very unrefined. Spells, except those crafted by higher powers or earned through intense focus (bloodline spells, witch's patron spells, do not exist as they have not yet been created. Wordcasting seems very good for giving this idea, but I do not know if I want to use the system RAW in its current state, as I have seen recommendations against ever using it by some people, and it has not been revisited since its creation. Are there any good third party expansions for the system?

President, Jon Brazer Enterprises

My company, Jon Brazer Enterprises, released two supplements for the wordcasting system: Book of Magic: 10 Undead Spell Words and Book of Magic: Energy Words Revisited.

Before producing these, I played a wordcaster. Upon reading it, the system may not sound like a good idea, like it should be tweaked heavily, but it really does work well and is fun to play. Give it a try before deciding to modify it heavily.

IMO, the only real modification I thought was required was more standardization for the damage words. Specifically, a number of damaging spell words felt like they were at a certain spell level or a damaging spell also granted a certain condition so someone could make an exact vancian equivalent, which annoyed me. Book of Magic: Energy Words Revisited was what I felt was the fix the system needed. This is optimized the damage on its own merits and does not grant any conditions letting the player add on whatever they want.

Book of Magic: 10 Undead Spell Words, I created because I felt that there were not enough words that targeted undead creatures. If you're in an undead heavy campaign, there really is not much in the wordcasting system that really caters to you.

Interjection Games has Words of Power Unleashed. This, along with the aforementioned Jon Brazer Enterprises works are pretty much all I found when I went on a similar search a few months ago.

Which is unfortunate, since the system has a great deal of potential.

A section of Kobold Press' Deep Magic has some Words of Power; I wouldn't buy the whole book just for the Words of Power content, but the rest of the book is pretty good.

[Also, the Words of Power stuff isn't open content; rant, rant rant.]
