Carrion Crown HELP

Carrion Crown

Hello, I plan to visit this site much more actively and I do hope I have posted this is in correct area. I need some questions answered and as a long time lurker in the background here I know you'll be the perfect people to ask.

~

LvL 1 PARTY COMP: (All our followers of Pharasma except the Wizard).

-Infiltrator Ranger: (Archery/Undead killing focused)
-Detective Bard: (Buff/Anti-fear focused uses staff)
-Necromancy Spec' Wizard: (No raising undead only necro spells)
-Order of the Star Cavalier: (Trip/reach/melee)
-Preacher Inquisitor[me]: (Melee/Anti-Undead Focused, De-buff/Damage-wise)

I am extremely excited to play Carrion Crown as I love horror themed games, but among the questions I need answered are as follows:

1-Is it viable to have my character take multiple enchantment spells without taking Threnodic Spell, or is non-undead very rare? I plan to stack Spell Focus, GSF, and Spell Bane for +4 to my DC's by level 7 for a total of 19-22 DC.

2-I have invested in diplomacy and knowledge skills heavily, I don't want to step on any toes with the bard but I don't feel confident relying on one roll to diffuse a situation or gain key knowledge. Should I rely on the bard or not?

3-Is our party viable in this campaign *BOTH* combat wise and roleplay wise*?

Thanks, any questions please feel free to ask, thanks for your time.

1. Different sections of the adventure path have widely varying types of opponents. It's hard to know how much detail to give you without spoiling things, and this might be a better question to ask your DM.

2. Like you, my personal preference is to have more than one source of information. Have you talked to the bard's player about toe-stepping?

3. If that's the party that your group really wants to play then it could work. A cleric would not be amiss, but you can get by without one.

Scarab Sages

Let me see....

With regards to your 3rd question when I played it our party consisted of an order of the shield cavalier, a black blade/blade bound magus and a wizard. We made almost through the entirety of book 1 by playing carefully and working well as a team. The only party healing was my cavalier with the first aid kit and a few healing potions that we found (which we rationed for emergencies).

Towards the end of book 1 my fellow party members both perished and were replaced by a dhampir bard and an urban barbarian. Again we fared fairly well although by 5th level my cavalier was multiclassing into cleric as things were definitely tougher than in book 1 (mostly due to our party makeup).

Having a bard or any other kind of social skills & knowledge related character along in book 2 can really help out - especially if you've got more than one of them. Unfortunately we never got to book 3 as the GM became too ill to continue running it but I'd say your overall party build doesn't look too bad. You should be able to manage okay :).

Thanks for the early response tbug and Balgin. GM said there would be other enemies besides undead. I'm just asking for a percentage. Like is it 90% undead and 10% non or what?

Also I forgot to add, the domain I took is Repose-Souls, for flavor purposes, I hope to use the anti-incorporeal ability that comes with it hopefully. The bard is a friendly guy and we are all actually very good friends but I think you're right. I will let him roll first and if he fails i'll try to fix the failed diplomacy or actually make the knowledge roll. Also I have invested in a silver weapon/morningstar.

We all talked as a group and we felt like having a paladin or cleric would make this easy mode as we are all pretty good roleplayers and veterans.

Welcome! Be careful on this Carrion Crown subforum--most of the folks posting in here are GMs sharing ideas, so spoilers abound.

You’ll be fine. Inquisitor enchantments like Command, Compel Hostility, Forbid Action and Litany of Sloth will be useful in many places without causing as many headaches as a well-placed Suggestion can. You might want to give your GM a heads-up if you plan to be taking a lot of prisoners to interrogate with Hold Person.

There will be many fights where mind-affecting spells won’t help you, but as an inquisitor you’ll have other tools in your toolbox you can rely on. If you don’t want to grab Theronodic metamagic, you will eventually be in a city big enough to give you a chance of purchasing a lesser rod of it.

The Souls subdomain will be quite useful.

Double up, and if necessary soothe your detective bard’s feelings by offering lots of Aid Another actions rather than rolling first. Roleplay being a detective/inquisitor tag team, perhaps drawing inspiration from a good crime procedural...have you seen True Detective? Have one of you take lots of Intimidate and one of you take Diplomacy, and play good cop/bad cop.

Certainly it’s viable. You’ll find some sections much easier and some sections much harder than would the generic fighter/cleric/wizard/thief party, but that’s all for the better.
