0-2C: Defeated by Hirgenzosk on a technicality.

Pathfinder Adventure Card Society

So, my group tonight lost at 0-2C... not because of bad dice rolls or anything; hell, we took down a freaking Owlbeartross successfully. No, we lost because Krelloort went and hid at Pinnacle Atoll and someone rolled a 1.

Can't fight Krelloort if the deck isn't otherwise empty. Can't get Hirgenzosk out of Pinnacle Atoll without someone having a Fear spell, short of a villain/henchman early location-close. Krelloort will always hide behind Hirgy, and Hirgy will never clear out so we can get at Krelloort.

Kinda left everyone with a sour taste in their mouths. Hopefully better luck next week...

That. Sucks.

First... that sucks! Sorry you experienced it.

While what you experienced was a very niche case... I again wonder if this was a design intention or a design oversight. i.e was the intention to have the players uncover this snag and deal with it by making sure they close Pinnacle Atoll asap so this can't happen. If so then you unfortunately fell into the trap and know better for the next time. If not then maybe Pinnacle Atoll isn't the right location for scenarios with Krelloort.

Either which way it certainly wasn't fun but I appreciate you're sharing your experience so I don't make the same mistake when I get to 2-C.

Sovereign Court

So... close it ASAP and keep someone there 24/7 for temp closes if you summon the most evil thing ever to curse grace PACG with his presence?

Huh. That does indeed suck, and is a corner case I didn't uncover in testing. I'll push a fix shortly.

This was bound to happen once there was an undefeatable monster in the game. A similar situation occurs in 0-1D Salvage Operations if you fail to acquire the special boon at Pinnacle Atoll and along the way you summon Hirgenzosk. You have to close the location to win; there's no villain or henchman to fight to close the location; but you can't close the location with Hirgenzosk in it.

But you have at least one chance at avoiding the situation by acquiring the special boon; in this case, if Krelloort shuffles into Pinnacle Atoll and you roll a 1 on any encounter there, you lose.

There's the rub, though. Krelloort shuffled into Pinnacle Atoll at the start, he didn't run away to there. The only way to close the location was to defeat Krelloort... which means all nine encounters had to get sorted out.

That's nine rolls of the d12, potentially plus one for running into Krelloort early, and plus one more for each failed bane encounter that has to be dealt with again (which also potentially adds another early Krelloort). I don't like those odds.

In any case, I'm playing a few solo runs over this weekend to finish catching my 1002 up to the 1001s in the rest of the group, and fully intend to use my adventure-1 card feat to add an extra spell slot and do my best to get a Fear spell into my deck.
