Gems, Besmara's Tricorne and magic trait

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Let's say ranzak is exploring and he runs into a Ghost - Combat 13 or Wisdom 8 to defeat but it must have the magic trait or it is considered undefeated.

Poor Ranzak has no magic weapons in hand, but he is nothing if not resourceful- in his hand he has a Gem of Constitution and Besmaras Tricorn, but here is what we are wondering:

a) If he uses the gem to replace his regular D4 wisdom with his D12 constitution does the Gem (which has a magic trait) add its magic to the check?

b) If he uses Besmaras Tricorn to add a D8 to his wisdom check, does the Tricorn (which has a magic trait) add its magic to the check?

Our group has played RotR and now S&S and to our shame, we're still unclear on when those traits are added to checks besides when you use magic weapons.

Neither add the magic trait. There are 3 ways to get a trait on on a check.

1. The card you play to "Determine Which Skill You're Using" adds all the traits on that card to the check.

2. The skill you use (and any skills that skill refers to) are traits on a check.

3. Any power of a card or character that tells you to specifically add a trait.

The statstones* and Besmaras Tricorn both are NOT played to "Determine Which Skill You're Using", they are played during "Play Cards and Use Powers That Affect the Check." So unless the traits of the cards are not added to the check.

*The statstone might seem odd, but remember, they are just changing the size of the die you are using, they don't let you use the other skill. So they aren't determining the skill.

Poor Ranzak. But he probably stole those things anyway.

Those were definitely stolen goods. Thanks Hawkmoon!

So Hawkmoon - as far as you know is there any way to add the magic trait to a wisdom check such as would be required by the ghost to defeat him?

Or is that just in place so you have an alternate way of dealing with him and not getting hurt.

RotR Kyra (and RotR Seelah's Crusader role) had powers that added dice and the Magic trait to any check to defeat a bane with the Undead trait. That would work no matter what type of check you were making, even the Wisdom check.

Other than that, I can't think of anything off the top of my head that I've seen that would work. But you never know what might come next.

Darago from the Wizard Class Deck also adds dice and the Magic trait to his checks against Undead.
