Well.. that's true of any game. If you don't like the genre of game, you're probably not going to like a specific game within that genre.

Liberty's Edge

Does this have any kind of single player? Bot matches?

It has a vs Bots mode. Though it's not terribly much fun, and the xp gain is halved.

Been playing on Xbox One actually. After all this build-up, I am a little excited and a little disappointed.

The backstory remains interesting and lots of little details in the maps are cool; the characters are interesting; and visually it's great.

That being said, it is team-PVP focused combat and your mileage may vary on that. I can't say I was expecting something revolutionary, but maybe something a little more unique and less mechanical in that manner.

But Warcraft started as an RTS game with an interesting backstory and not much else and look how much it has evolved. So, maybe there's more potential in the future for the game. Given that this was the Beta run, there could be more features that will be added as the game develops.

My only issue with the game, so far, is how much lore and background is withheld. I hope it makes it into the game somehow. Blizzard has, apparently, released character bAckgrounds somewhere, as they are on the Overwatch Wiki, but none of it was in the Beta. For example, the full name of the characters, age, nationality etc.

A lot of the characters are interwoven, for example, Soldier 76 used to be the Commander of Overwatch, whereas Reaper was once his best friend but turned bitter and jealous as he helped form Overwatch and got passed up for the Commander position. This turned sour and lead to a division in Overwatch resulting in a battle inside the headquarters, causing an explosion. Both Soldier and Reaper were presumed dead, and the explosion was attributed to an accident, though rumors of the battle surfaced. Afterwards, both Soldier and Reaper adopted their new identities.

Or how Widowmaker was once the wife of one of the higher ups of Overwatch, before being brainwashed into killing her husband by the Talon mercenaries (the same people who attacked Winston with Reapers help in the animated short). Then they subjected her to more brainwashing and experiments, completely stripping her of her personality and emotions, and slowing down her heartbeat, turning her into the person she is today.

I hope they don't do the Destiny thing and keep it out of the game, I'd love to learn more about the history and setting of the game, along with the characters. I just don't want to have to go out of game to do it.

Out of game is best IMO, just like TF2 did it. Maybe unique voice lines like that game did for Soldier and Demoman when encountering characters with relationships.

Just curious, what do you think that would look like in a game that's entirely designed around PvP matchmaking where matches last about 10 minutes?

The game doesn't have a single player mode, there is no story mode. The game is entirely built around PvP.

Well, and I may get some flak for this as, apparently, the Overwatch community despises Battleborn, but Battleborn let's you unlock lore and background as you play each character more with specific types of challenges.

For exa m please, there might be a challenge for Soldier and Reaper to kill each other in combat 10 times and then you unlock some of the more about the two. Or after healing X amount of damage with your Cry ability as Mei, you unlock some information about how she was part of a research team that got stranded AnTarctica and used Cryostasis to survive. But due to failures in the facility, Mei was the only survivor and woke up in a world greatly change from the one she was a part of decades before. Or after Hanzo kills Genji so many times, you unlock why Hanzo was originally forced to kill his brother. Or after Genji is healed for X amount of damage by Zenyatta, you learn Genji is the disciple of Zenyatta and Zenyatta helped Genji come to terms with his new robotic body.

They could also drop little paragraphs or lore in the loading screen, and each but of lore, once viewed for the first time, unlocks for permanent viewing in a separate tab. They designed it so you can browse your hero gallery while searching for matches, so why not be able to browse the Lore as well?

Ah, that sounds good. I thought you meant like story missions and whatnot, which would be weird.

Sundakan wrote:

While I wouldn't mind story missions, at all, I also know that's completely off the radar. At least, at this point. I dunno about the future or sequels to the game. I can't help but think we may get a prequel game with story and PVP dealing with the formation of Overwatch and overcoming the Omni Crisis.

Usually, yes... But there are some games that I'd say are worth checking out even if you're not a fan of their genre.

Here is a series of articles with summaries of the Lore for Overwatch so far.

Had enough fun in the beta that I preordered it (the $40 version, which was kind of hidden behind the $60 one).

This is my first time using battlenet, is there a paizo boards community on it that I could join (sort of like steam groups)?

Maybe it's just me, but that one may be the best one yet. Of course, hints are the last one involves the old Overwatch teammates - Reaper vs. Soldier 76 taking place in Dorado.

It's lore to set up the characters. Unlike Warcraft, there isn't going to be an ongoing evolving storyline. The lore and videos exist only to get you in the mood for those random 5x5 shootups. And it really seems that only a few like Tracer, Winston, and Widowmaker really get the intense treatment.

What I think they're doing is focusing on the 'major' stories, ones that set up the backdrop of Overwatch, and ones th as that are major issues between characters.

Most of the characters don't have a ton of interaction, so I doubt their stories will be animated, at least, at first. But Soldier/Reaper's no doubt will be. Others I could see is a confrontation between Symmetra and Lucio, and a path of carnage featuring Junkrat and Roadhog.

I have really enjoyed their animated shorts. Alive with Window maker was the first short that highlighted a "villain" although Tracer was there as well.

Sadly, I am not that interested in the game. I prefer co-op and single player games these days.

This is incorrect. The original Diablo has a multiplayer capability. I still own the game and play it from time to time, though since I don't have a 14.4k modem anymore, the multiplayer aspect is a thing of the past!

-------

Overwatch is amazing. I've played quite extensively in a couple of the betas and I'm very excited for next Monday! (yes, Monday. The launch date is Tuesday but a recent developer stated the game will be available to play in the US as of 4pm Pacific on 4/23/2016)

I've been enthralled by Blizzard games since about '95 and this one is pretty unique compared to their other endeavors. I'm still trying to get my hands on a SNES Lost Vikings cartridge that doesn't break the bank...

Blizzard recently updated Diablo 2 for use on modern Windows.

I'm not sure why but I didn't play Diablo II when it was current, and so playing in retro doesn't hold a lot of appeal to me.

I wish Blizz would update the code on Diablo I and Warcraft II so that they could be played through Battle.net. (I know the original Battle.net was for WC2...I wonder if it is still functional? I'm certain it was still functioning a handful of years ago because I saw active games still being played there when I dusted off my old copy.)

Is that a downloadable version, and if so where can I get it?

I bought the treasure chest a few years ago, but it was still XP.

Also, does anyone know how to fix a bug in Act II. Ever since Microsoft 7 did an upgrade 2 years ago, the game crashes every time I get to a certain point while looking for the black soul gem. I have reported this problem to Blizzard, but there has been no word or fixes. I have uninstalled the game and reinstalled it, but no joy.

I have the same problem with Torchlight 2 BTW.

New short is out: Hero

Soldier 76 deals with Los Muertos gang (not Reaper like it looked initially).

Yes it is downloadable and you can obtain it from battle.net. I think it's like ten bucks.

So who's playing it on the PS4? I'd love to get a fun crew running :)

I'm playing on the Xbone myself.

Well I'm on the Xbone, for Tels and anyone else. Send me an invite: Zeer0c00l

Just for a laugh: Conan plays Overwatch

Also, playing on XBone - although haven't really done more than test it for a little bit due to work, etc.

This game is a blast. Moving objectives, 21? different characters, and a gorilla with a jetpack beating on a cyborg ninja. Wheeeee!

The different abilities lend themselves to a lot of strategic and tactical options depending on the make up of the teams. Its the closeest I think i've seen to a real time Dungeons and dragons brawl.

Is this just a PvP and/or shoot-em-up, or is there a storyline that goes along with this?

The shorts have a lot of story and background info (as well as some truly epic fight scenes) but in play its just shoot em up (or zap them up, or smash them in the face with a rocket powered hammer em up)

Try patch 1.13 (I think that's the one).

It makes your game like the downloadable one. It means you don't need the disc to run the game, and it runs (or should) on Win 8.1/10 easily.

I've applied the patch, but haven't played DII recently to check it all out.

I am immensely enjoying Reinhardt. He can be a real team playing throwing up the shield to block for everyone, rocket past people to snag objectives, or on a good day stun the entire team set them on fire pile driver someone's head into the wall and then smash them ALL TO PIECES WITH A ROCKET POWERED HAMMER! Its incredibly strategic

Trbjorn needs to be stuffed down a vent shaft though. Trobjorn just sets up a turrent and its PLAY OF THE GAME! Trobjorns turrent kills opposing team. Trbjorn in bathroom whole time..

If this game is as much like TF2 class balance wise as it always seemed to be, the Engineer getting all the kills is the fault of the enemy team dying like lemmings to a stationary turret instead of strategizing, not the Engineer/Torbjorn player.

Get your Demoman equivalent and toss some bombs on he f@!*er.

The main issue with Torbjorn is the incredible range of his turret. Even snipers can have trouble not taking heavy damage from them at times. That isn't to say things can't be done about enemy turrets in general, but considering an entire team of just that one character can set up an insta-kill zone on a defense point (turrets lock on immediately), it's a telltale sign that the character needs some tweaking.

It has the range of a sniper

It deals enough damage to take out a tank in lag time

Doesn't miss: you cant dodge or evade it

Locks on instantly in 360 degrees, you can't evade or sneak up on it.

has a butload of hitpoints (at least 200?)

Will eat through 2,000 hit points of shield in 6 seconds (most characters have 200 hit points. Tanks have 500 hp)

And can't be charged: its stuck in the ground.

I don't know if there's a good one person counter to it at this point.

It has a 40m range, after which it can't lock on. It's trivially easy to poke the turret down and take only minimal damage, if any. I do it all the time with Soldier, Mei, Hanzo, and Pharah. Winemaker is great too, but I never play her.

It has 150 hp, upgraded to 300 at level 2, and 600 during his ult. Tracker does 160 DPS, Pharah does 120 damage per rocket, Soldier has 170 DPS, Widowmaker does 170 damage on a fully charged shot. So it takes only 2 seconds to bring it down at level 2, 4 seconds during his ult.

The turret deals 14 points of damage, and 2 shots per secondst level 1, 4 shots at level 2 and 5 shots during ult, plus 4 rockets fired per second during ult. So at level 1 means 28 DPS, 56 DPS at level 2, and during his ult it's 70 DPS from his barrels and a further 56 DPS on the rockets in a small AoE. So, I highly doubt he's shredding a 2,000 point shielding 6 seconds. Hello, it takes Bastion in Sentry mode 5 seconds to do that and he has the highest DPS in the game.

Quote:

Which is pretty far in this game. Its trivilally easy to put it in a room so that there isn't a greater than 40 line of sight to it.

These are the same gripes and counter-arguments aid down for literally every FPS game I've ever played.

You as a human may not aim perfectly, but against a stationary target you should be damn near close to it.

Your perception of how long it takes something to kill you sounds fairly skewed if the numbers posted above are accurate. A lot of people underestimate how fast these sorts of games move, exactly. 10 seconds is an eternity in game time, most 1 on 1 battles are going to end in under that time period regardless, unless you have something silly like two tank classes using peashooters to chip damage the other.

Sundakan wrote:

Which is why I'm using the in game cooldown timer.

If YOU're a stationary target too. Which you better NOT be if you want to be an alive target.

Whatever arguments are made about easily defeat-able turrets, this is pretty much the real problem. With even just a couple of Torbjorn's providing cover fire for each other, any team can run into a hail of auto-lock fire on a defense team.

You put them in bottleneck map like Hanamura or Route 66, and that can be extremely hard to overcome.

BigNorseWolf wrote:

...No. You have complete control of your camera. Set it on the target. Adjust as you move. It ain't goin' NOWHERE brother.

Basic of the basic of the basics of any FPS, you can move, control the camera, and shoot all at the same time. If you can't, you're making the game a lot harder than it really is (see: Polygon plays Doom).

Area denial in itself is a controversial topic as far as objective based games go, but there's a difference between "This mechanic is frustrating and serves to do nothing but slow down and stalemate the game" and "This tactic is nearly insurmountable".

Indeed there is a difference but in this particular instance, the area being denied is the area that the game requires you to go and it is dangerously close to insurmountable. We're talking six turrets each doing 56 dps with most characters, apart from tank characters (500-600 health) having about 200-250 HP. When you consider that turrets will often lock on to the same character, that's literally instant death for anyone but a tank who instead have just under two seconds to get the heck out. This isn't even taking into account the dps from Torbjorn himself who can deal 140 dps with his single shot fire or anywhere from 79.8 - 199.5 dps with his shotgun fire mode. Also if even one Torbjorn activates his ultimate, the team pushing is pretty much guaranteed to fail and will be forced to fall back until their entire team is ready to push again. Due to the damage he deals, his ultimate builds up very rapidly as well.

That (for roughly the hundredth time, though to a different audience in this case) is a problem with map design, not character design.

A good map has multiple routes to go through, so you can flank the enemy and take out their turrets and other stationary defenses.

To continue the TF2 comparisons, it's not that the Demoman is overpowered, it's that Dustbowl's straight hallways, cramped spaces, and few routes is hilariously bad map design. Change the map to something actually GOOD (like Badwater), and that overwhelming power disappears.

Maps with no routes are an Engineer-type and any spam class' wet dream.

I'd be willing to bet there are huge issues with classes like Hanzo and Pharah on maps like that as well, single corridors where projectiles can be spammed ad infinitum to create a wall of death.
