Feeblemind and Arcane Bond spell casting

Rules Questions

Silver Crusade

can a wizard who has been Feebleminded still cast a spell through his arcane bond? (player and I disagree)

It says in the core rules: "This spell is treated like any other spell cast by the wizard, including casting time, duration, and other effects dependent on the wizard’s level."

I think that mean he cannot cast it, because Int is too low, and it says the same rules apply. Player thinks he still can, because Feedblemind effects Int and Cha, but not level.

thoughts? official rulings?

Because of the Int score he can't.

"To learn, prepare, or cast a spell, the wizard must have an Intelligence score equal to at least 10 + the spell level. The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against a wizard's spell is 10 + the spell level + the wizard's Intelligence modifier."

1 is not higher than 10 + any spell level, so he cannot cast any spells from his wizard class ability.

Even if their lowered intelligence didn't already disqualify them, feebleminded creatures are unable to cast spells at all, regardless of what their ability scores are. A cleric or druid would still be unable to cast a spell despite their Wisdom score not being mechanically affected by the spell.

Shadow Lodge

The above are correct. "This spell is treated like any other spell cast by the wizard" and a Feebleminded character can't cast spells.

The phrase "including casting time, duration, and other effects dependent on the wizard’s level" is not meant to be exclusive - it's not meant to say that the arcane bond spell is only like a normal wizard spell in ways dependent on level.

Scarab Sages

Hmm... here's the relevant bonded item text.

"A bonded object can be used once per day to cast any one spell that the wizard has in his spellbook and is capable of casting, even if the spell is not prepared. This spell is treated like any other spell cast by the wizard, including casting time, duration, and other effects dependent on the wizard's level. This spell cannot be modified by metamagic feats or other abilities."

The line that makes me question the whole thing is the first line. A bonded object can be used once per day to cast any one spell...

That seems to imply that the bonded item is casting the spell effect.

The sentence that talks about the limitations starts with, "This spell is treated like any other spell cast by the wizard"

If feeblemind is preventing the wizard from casting spells, then those spells are no longer applicable thanks to the wording. The spell through the bonded item has to be treated like any other spell CAST by the wizard. Not any other spell the wizard normally has the ABILITY to cast.

As written it seems to imply that the bonded item is the caster, and would actually bypass that particular restriction for one spell.

"A bonded object can be used once per day to cast any one spell that the wizard has in his spellbook and is capable of casting"

You cut off the second half of the sentence. The wizard is not capable of casting the spell, because feeblemind prevents any casting.
