Magic jar and target hit dice

For the purposes of spells and effects with hit dice limitations, such as deep slumber, does a person using magic jar count his normal hit dice, or his host body's hit dice?

Take my 9th-level wizard, for example. Is he effected by deep slumber whilst in the body of a 12 HD giant?

What if it were a 16th-level sorcerer in the body of a 6 HD troll?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Since it is mind effecting I say that it targets the caster and not the body.

What? Magic jar is necromancy. It doesn't have the mind-affecting tag at all.

EDIT: Oh, you mean deep slumber? So you would have it vary based on whether the GM thinks the spell is targeting the body or the mind then? Seems like a slippery slope seeing as most spells simply target the creature as a whole.

We have always varied based on whether the target was the body or the mind.

I think that only makes sense, since the mind in this case is the only constant.

For HD dependent effects, use the HD of the body. You can always shift back to your own body if the host body is put to sleep or otherwise incapacitated.
