Wow, this thread exploded since I last checked. I can't wait to see how one of the cooler concepts for magic grows. In some ways, it reminds me of Garth Nix's charter magic from Sabriel. Very cool stuff awaits.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I like the name Warspeaker better than Knight-Scholar. Knight-Scholar feels more like the name of an archetype or prestige class. Maybe an archetype that returns the Warspeaker to Int?

With a name like Warspeaker and abilities like Warcries, I think the idea going in should be less 'motivational speaker' and more 'sergeant telling the universe to what it's told or else'.

I like the name Advocate. It gives me an idea of someone that either convinces the universe through rethoric and debate or through some sort of bargaining. Can the Advocate have a lawyer archetype? Maybe a writer or storyteller archetype whose edicts are him telling the universe that the story should go this way instead of that. Maybe a bard archetype?

Also What Tzocatl really needs IMO, is a third class. PoW I and II and Akashic Mysteries both have three classes, it seems to me the perfect number for showcasing a system. Maybe a medium BAB skill user? Split focus between Int and Cha with abilities to use these two instead of phisical scores so they don't get too MAD. Someone in the playtest documented suggested Poet for a class name. A mixture of word artist, conman and motivational speaker. Where the Warspeaker orders the universe to do things and the Advocate reasons with the universe, the Poet could be the guy that lies and charms so well the universe believes and changes to accomodate.

Definitely leaning more towards drill sergeant than motivational speaker on the Warspeaker, was just trying to find a good example of the differences between use and mastery of the language between the two classes. Also, I am already at work on a Bard archetype :)

As to the third class - I originally wanted the same thing. I had it in mind that the third class was going to use Edicts and Litanies through inscribing totems or tattoos, but after some discussion with the DSP team, we're going to try and work that idea into an archetype or two first, rather than creating a 3rd class just for the sake of creating a third class. Now, if archetypes turn out to not be the right medium for what I'm trying to do, we may very well revisit the idea of a third base class.

Eagerly looking forward to an update on this! I like the direction the OP was taking skill (I know it's not really a skill roll) based magic.

Regarding the name, one of the things I have loved about DSP is it's using of actual real words rather than amalgamation names for the classes. I disliked the over abundance of them in 3E (and 4E with its Shardmind Battlemind). I believe the only one currently used is the Soulknife, and that was just for legacy reasons.

I'm still leaning towards Warspeaker, but let's assume that Knight-Scholar is off the table and explore some other options:

Declaimer
Proclaimer
Wordsmith (technically an amalgamation name, but one with real world use)
Death Metal Lead Singer

....

I'm open to suggestions.

Declaimer does sound cool admittedly.

Ssalarn,
I'm really thrown by the wording of the emphasized Imperative of Deflection... just what is the max AC that it can grant you? I realize I am probably just too dense to parse the power ... so could someone explain please.

Looking forward to the update making a playtest character for tomorrow... any chance of an update soon?

Eagerly waiting, but sagely realizing you are working on a bunch of different stuff...

Yeah, meant to have an update out already but parsing through the edicts is taking a bit longer than expected. Gonna try and get it ready by the end of the weekend, hopefully tomorrow.

It's unfortunate, but I can't even look at this without thinking of Escape from Monkey Island.

Ssalarn is there any ETA on the updated playtest document?

It got a bit delayed due to... Actually a ridiculous number of factors, but I'm working on getting it cranked out and in your hands ASAP.
