We find ourselves in Sandswept Hall, the Pathfinder Lodge in Sothis, Osirion, where Venture-Captain Norden Balentiir briefs our heroes on their upcoming mission.

Balentiir shutters of the windows in his second-story office overlooking the lodge’s tranquil gardens and seats himself behind his writing desk. He nods and introduces a thin, aging Garundi man in an ornately bejeweled and feathered turban. “This is Amenopheus, the Sapphire Sage. I trust most of you know of him already. If you don’t, know that he has served both the Ruby Prince and the Pathfinder Society for many years, uncovering vast troves of lore from Ancient Osirion and mentoring some of our finest agents. He recently approached my colleagues and me with a request for assistance, and the Society has agreed to step up and aid its ally. The arrangement is, in fact, rather mutually beneficial.” He nods to Amenopheus, signaling the elder man to speak.

“Faithful servants of the past, I bid you greetings,” the wizened sage says with a shallow bow. “Our esteemed ruler, the Ruby Prince, recently released me from his service, which has freed me to learn more about a little-known organization to which I belong: the Jeweled Sages, protectors of Osirion’s history and chroniclers of its past glories. Quite by accident, I found myself initiated into this group, and have long believed myself to be its sole surviving member. Each sage in the group possesses a unique jewel—a priceless artifact that contains memories of Osirion’s golden age.” He pauses as if considering how to express his thoughts “For many years, I have sought news of any other members of the Jeweled Sages. My agents recently learned of the Diamond Sage, whom they traced to the city of Eto in the Osirian Desert. At the same time, I received word from a reliable source that several other jewels in the vicinity. I ask that you travel to Eto, negotiate with my contact in the city for his assistance, and then use what you learn to find the Diamond Sage and these lost jewels.”

Venture-Captain Balentiir frowns and adds, “This contact has tried to remain anonymous, but we suspect he is none other than Grandmaster Torch. If you’ve heard of him—or worse, met him—you may know trading favors is his signature. Regardless of Torch’s past treacheries, we need you to deal with him fairly for the information. There is a caravan leaving for Eto in a few hours, so don’t delay.”

You can still ask questions to the VC

Annalísa stands and listens carefully to the description of her first mission. As Balentiir speaks, she eyes both him but looks more carefully at Amenopheus. When the old man gives his description of the task at hand, she slowly nods, trying to remember as many details as possible, although she thinks to herself I know absolutely nothing about these people who they keep mentioning. I'd better not ask about them though, I don't want to appear completely clueless in front of the Venture-Captain and these other agents. I am professional and I must show it to them! Once both men finish, she looks around to make sure no one else wants to ask anything, and then asks a few questions somewhat hesitantly:

to Balentiir:"Venture-Captain, you mentioned that our assistance to master Amenopheus would be mutually beneficial. May I ask how does this quest help our cause? Why are these Sages - and their jewels - so important?"

to Amenopheus:"Could you tell us more about the jewels and their connection to their namesake sages? And how did you enter the group by accident? It might be relevant for this quest or contacting the Diamond Sage."

The sage are the warden of the knowledge of ancient Osirion. Without their work, all this knowledge would be, and may still be, lost forever. I think the value of recovering all this knowledge on Osirion speaks for itself. Balentiir says.

Amenopheus then adds I will not thread into detail on how I entered the order, for it is irrelevant for the task at hand. The other members have remained elusive to me, up until now.

Amenopheus pulls a weathered stone from his robes and strikes it once against the wall to break the stone into two crystalline geode halves. He hands one piece to Race, instructing him, If you find one of the jewels of my order or the person known as the Diamond Sage, I ask that you contact me. Concentrate on the stone and speak a message of a few dozen words. I will hear you and respond with further instructions. It will only work once, so keep it safe.

Balentiir has arranged transport on a caravan travelling to Eto, The journey overland passes without incident.

The immense rock walls that ring Eto rise from the horizon like a shimmering mirage that gradually sharpens into focus. The city sits inside an elevated crater with sheer, weathered sides broken only in two places by heavily guarded gates. Long lines of caravans wait in a meandering queue awaiting entrance as officials search their cargos for contraband and calculate taxes. Water sellers, food vendors, and guides march up and down the lines peddling their wares and services to the visitors. Beyond the gates, the main thoroughfares fan out around the various districts of the city before dwindling into the dozens of pathways that flow through the bazaar like the delta of the great River Sphinx.

Customs, standard procedure the caravan driver says you didn't bring any illegal goods, did you?

There's still some time to make preparations before inspection.

When the caravan approaches the inspection point, a brief conversation goes off between the inspector and the caravan driver. You're travelling with a lot of folk. These passenger of yours? an inspector asks, to which the caravan guard replies yes, they are. We came from Sothis, and they paid for passage.

All in order then. the inspector says. You drive your wagon over there, your passenger will have to come off for a separate inspection.

The party is guided to a small building, in which a bored Garundi man has seen it all. Anything to declare up front? Contraband, drugs, explosives, Osirian artefacts?

If you want to hide the geode, roll a sleight of hand check

As the journey has progressed, the tiefling, Insidion, has been mostly quiet. Despite his efforts to avoid speaking with the others, he seems a ferocious, possibly mentally unhinged tiefling with wild, bestial eyes. It is obvious that he has some draconic features, as well as his infernal characteristics.

He is trying to pay attention to the assignment, but seems to be having some difficulties.

Listen to me, and you will take power from others...beyond your wildest imagination...revel in it!

No...there is another path...one where you control your own destiny...

The tiefling appears, at times, to be possessed. He seems to be having an episode now. His erratic behavior and shifty eyes stare at the guard for a moment.

Manu the inspector lets out a sigh Aah. The ignorance stance. Surely you must be aware of the taxation on Osirian artefacts, now that the Ruby Prince has opened the borders to treasure-hunters.

So you came from Sothis, then? the inspector changes topic, as this seems to interest him more Where else did you go? You don't look like you're form Sothis.

"Don't mind my friend, here. He gets grumpy sometimes. " He tapped Insidion on the shoulder.
I hope he really comes to his senses and plays along, or else we will have lots of troubles here

"Well I understand the logic of taxing the artefacts, but I assure you that we don't have anything like that. You are a wise man, I see, and you surely understand, that smuggling Osirian artifacts to Osiron is pretty much nonsense. Don't you agree? Eather way, we understand that you have work to do, so let's get this over with and we will be on our way." Reinor gave the inspector the friendliest smile that he was capable of.

I'm too old to travel around much, but I've seen my share of the country. What you think? Sothis is quite the sight, isn't it? Out here, things are quite a bit calmer. The old inspector seems to cherish talking to travellers.[/b]

I understand it makes little sense if you came in from Sothis, but this place is a trade hub, and people come here from everywhere. It may feel like moving something into Osirion to you, but it feels like moving out to a lot of people.

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26 I'd be very surprised if Race managed to beat that in sleight of hand

What's this then the inspector says as he find the geode hidden among Race's goods. I think you just forgot to declare this, hmm? No matter, but you'll have to pay the appropriate tax, which is 20 reals for this item.

Annalísa moves in on her turn and begins to empty her backpack for the customs inspector. "As an inspector here you must have heard lots of news and rumors from all the caravans and travelers passing through. Have you heard anything particularly interesting lately?

As the inspector finds Race's geode, Annalísa tries to defuse the situation. "Surely my friend here did not mean to smuggle anything; this is hardly a precious artifact and more like a personal souvenir he picked up on the long road at just forgot all about it. It's a pretty hunk of crystal, and no more an ancient artefact than the sand in my boot, and there's enough of that that taxing it would beggar is all. There's plenty to see around town, you won't be bored.

There was a heavily scarred man that came in lately, seems to wield quite the influence. Maybe I'm prejudiced because of his looks, but he seemed to have an odd demeanour to him. Seems to stay at the house of the white Uraeus these days.

Reiner takes some time to gather the local rumours, and then finds out that Torch - quite the sight with his scarred face - is currently in the house of the White Uraeus.

Some time off... exactly what I wanted. Let's find out more about this contact Torch. The Venture-Captain seemed to suggest that he was a famous individual in this area. Annalísa leaves the inn and tries to learn more about who this Torch is and what kind of "past treacheries" are tied to his name. She first goes to the major taverns around, then asks a few knowledgable people on the street. Luckily, she finds some good sources of information very quickly.

Race goes out with Annalisa, acting as some muscle, keeping an eye out for cut purses.

"You make a great couple, Race. Enjoy the day, we may not get another." Swayaah chuckles as Race and Annalisa leave the tavern.

Did any of the PCs actually run in a adventure that featured Torch? If so, feel free to fill in Annalisa in a spoiler-free way.

Annalisa finds the dark of Torch: he is a power broker, and used to be a faction leader within the society, causing quite the uproar when he started something of a 'worker's movement' in the society. Among many society members, he is a persona non grata, though his former followers still support his beliefs. His face is badly scarred, with some magical burn that never seems to heal.

I haven't been in an adventure with Torch. Can we assume we all meet up again at the end of the day?

Swayaah's getting drunk somewhere, probably, and I haven't met this Torch guy, either.
