Question regarding upgrading after On The Horizon

Pathfinder Adventure Card Society

Ran through On The Horizon with a few friends this past weekend, and had a question regarding upgrading after completing this scenario.

First off, they played using characters they created from the Class Deck that they plan to use throughout our OP sessions. After successfully completing the scenario, just wanted to confirm, but are they able to do 2 upgrades? One based on the standard upgrade system (pick a loot/take equivalent from the class deck) and another for the special reward for completing a mini-chronicle sheet? We upgraded based on this.

A related question, if you were to play using the base set characters rather than class deck characters, can the base set characters keep the boons they picked up per normal play rules in the event they are going to be used for the normal Skull & Shackles adventure path?

Sadly, no. The reward section is pretty specific.

Whether you win or lose, you get one deck upgrade (and the rules are right there) and a mini-Chronicle sheet.

There is no standard upgrade. The reward is the upgrade.

If you're playing with normal characters then play that the reward is one you choose (based on the rules) and the rest of the cards can become normal deck upgrades.

EDIT: The demo is the same reward that you can apply to the class deck. Except that you can apply either the reward from the mini-Scenario or the demo but not both.

Thanks Theryon. When I read it initially, it sounded like it was in addition to the deck upgrade you get already described in the rule book. Will have my group reverse the second upgrade next time we play

We had this discussion in my group recently as well. While I agree with Theryon that with this specific scenario you only get a single upgrade, I don't feel that is not how it normally be. You should definitely read the reward section of each scenario carefully :).

The reason I say this is the next scenario - it gives a reward of a weapon or spell. The question came up should it just be the 1 reward card, or are 2 cards possible. I believe page 7 last paragraph of Earning Scenario Rewards says both are applicable- "If the party ran out of the allotted time for the scenario, players do not earn scenario rewards, but they can upgrade their decks."

This would indicate that players get the scenario reward + an additional deck upgrade from the loot you have come across in the scenario. Otherwise, you would get people "running out of time" the first time through just to get 2 rewards. It also makes sense that eventual rewards will be feats, but most players will still want to upgrade their decks weekly.

On the Horizon (0-0A) is the mini-Scenario which has different rules about rewards. It's just meant to introduce you some of the concepts like chronicle sheets and upgrades.

The others, 0-1x, have the normal rules on rewards and upgrades.

So to confirm: do you not get a skill feat for finishing this scenario?

No, the introductory scenario doesn't count towards anything, including advancing tiers (so it will never give you a feat, nor count towards letting you advance to the next tier).

Theryon is, as usual, correct. To play historian for a second, On the Horizon was released both to give people a way to introduce PACG in a more timely manner and to cover a small shipping delay with the first set of Class Decks. Thus, its wording is weird, because it was the first of its kind.
