Axanar looks very, very good. It helps that they got several experienced actors for the project.
Horizon looks very bad. Not only is the trailer ineptly done, they also went with the temporal cold war background, which killed Star Trek: Enterprise.
I'm very impressed with Axanar, though they use the FASA RPG chronology. The Four Years War was, if I recall, only barely mentioned in TOS, but FASA expanded on its history. Also, I think Richard Hatch's portrayal of "Kharn The Undying" is amazing.
I don't think Horizon is really bad, but it could've been done a little better. And yeah, the Temporal Cold War thing was a waste of good tv.

The trailer makes Horizon look bad. I will probably watch at least the first 10 minutes, though. I'm also not a canon hound, so if Axanar works and Paramount doesn't block it, I'm fine with it, FASA or no FASA.
As for good fan movies, I recommend Star Trek: Phase II. They have done tremendous work with the scripts for the scrapped second TV series.

I'm a big fan of Star Trek Continues and Star Trek: Phase II both, though I think I like STC more. Vic Mignogna has got Kirk down to an art.

Axanar and Aurora are both brilliant, in their way. I consider the latter even more impressive because it's the brain child of one person, if I recall correctly.
Star Trek Continues is unquestionably superior to Star Trek: Phase II, in my opinion. Cawley's Kirk always felt like a borderline caricature even at its most effective, whereas Mignogna seems to be channeling the first season Kirk rather than the out-of-control latter-stages guy Shatner imposed on us in later episodes.

I finally watched the trailers via YouTube. I was actually somewhat impressed to tell the truth. Fan Films have changed in quality quite a bit recently it seems.
(The websites don't load all that well for me, so youtube was what I had to see the trailers on finally).
From youtube...
The opening scene of "Horizon" is available, as well. It's about 6 minutes long.
