So i am building my first cavalier in PFS an i am doing the rare Cavalier.... that is to say i am not small.
Thanks to the new undersized mount feat this a medium cavalier is now more doable.
To that end I have been trying to determine which beast he beast rider will ultimately use and i am stuck
I like both he Tiger and the Allosaurus
Both get pounce and 3 attacks, both have grab
Generally speaking the Allosaurus is tougher, better AC and it is stronger.
Tiger has a slightly better dex, and gets rake eventually, not a bad thing.
Same speed
From what i can tell the big advantage the Allosaurus has is in its available slots.
It can get rings, a belt (being able to have a belt of strength is huge) and in general looks to have the better slot options..
but... then again this is my first time running a animal companion in pfs. So ADVICE..... what have people experienced out there. Thoughts......etc...

going to make it easy for you, Allosaurus used to be legal, but not anymore.
When did that change?
Allosaurus are from bestiary 2.
The list of pfs allowed animal companion from bestiary 2:
Animal Companions: baboon, compsognathus, gar, hippopotamus, manta ray, ram, giant snapping turtle, stingray;
...and that's it.
So they got rid of the most popular options, but made sure you still had not one but THREE choices for an aquatic animal companion - in a season with absolutely no aquatic environments. Yeah, that's just brilliant.
Hmm |
About the animal magic item slots -- since your animal has to use the "Extra Magic Item Slot" feat for every magic item it takes in PFS aside from the armor and the neck slots -- most of the quadrupeds come out pretty equal in that respect. Horses get a few more free magic item slots than most critters (saddle and horseshoes) but they're the only ones.

unfortunately quads cannot where a belt. They have the belt (saddle) denotation which means the only items they can where are magical saddles, not say a belt of strength. To me at least..thats a pretty big minus. I was hoping to find out what others have done since the belts were out for quads.
