Umpteenth Dragon's Demand Campaign Recruitment

Recruitment

We'll use this to discuss character creation. Participation is by invitation only.

The adventure will begin in the heavily-fortified, dwarven city of Maheto, in the primarily human empire of Taldor, along the northern foothills of the World’s Edge Mountains. Here is a map of the area.

The PCs will have been hired by a caravan master named Silas Gribb to escort a shipment of famed Maheto blades and saws to the gnomish town of Wispil in the heart of the Verduran forest.

This game will use the Pathfinder rules, most of which can be found here for free. You need not own a single rulebook to play, and beginners are welcome.

For character creation, use standard Pathfinder Society organized play rules found in the current Guide to Organized Play here and using the approved rules from the campaign's additional resources, found here.

If you wish to vary from those character creation rules, send me an email at artseverance@yahoo.com with the rule you wish to use and the name of the source (and a link, if you can provide one). Exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Game play will start sometime after October 12, 2014. We will work on character creation in this thread until then.

Dragon's Demand is a multi-part adventure designed to take characters from 1st through 7th level. We will play with whatever characters we make, and you will earn chronicle sheets that you can apply to characters in the Pathfinder Society organized play campaign. There are three normal chronicle sheets that will be distributed at various points during the adventure and a fourth sheet if you participate in the entire adventure. The official blurb for the adventure is here.

If you agree to play, you commit to trying to post about one time a day and to inform the rest of us if there will be any periods longer than a day or so in which you will not be able to post due for some reason.

If you need help creating our PC, either with a concept or the rules, holler!

The Exchange

I'm in, Art! Still thinking of character concepts. Perhaps a non-combatant cleric, or a swashbuckler.

The Exchange

For those of you who don't do Pathfinder Society, the Pathfinder Society organized play creation rules start with a 20point ability score buy. Most Pathfinder classes are allowed, though a few are restricted in some way. For instance, no wizard item creation feats.

I'm actually going to enforce the no item creation rule in this campaign. Item creation has really caused a lot of balance problems in the home campaigns I have run and played in.

how does one get invited?

Invites have already gone out, Oddr. I'm trying to get some old friends from across the country back together for a game.

The Exchange

Are there campaign traits for Dragon's Demand?

Nope, no campaign traits.

Does this mean That i cant't join ?

Most likely. I've moved around a lot since college and I'm running this for friends in various cities with whom I don't get to game anymore.

Here is Professor Taldus Bellerophon, caravan chirurgeon.

"My good caravan master, OF COURSE a rival turned me in! Inter-collegiate politics are truly cutthroat. You have no idea! My paper on the anatomy of the Osiriani Ouat dwarf was going to be truly breathtaking in its depth and discernment!" says Professor Bellerophon when asked about his banishment from the University.

He scratches at his beard with his neatly trimmed fingernails. Really quite odd to see the neatly trimmed, perfectly groomed fingers scratching the wild, unkempt beard. Gribb, the caravan master, recognizes a new tick in the making when he sees one. Clearly Professor Bellerophon hasn't worn a beard for long and is uncomfortable.

"That, of course, is the genesis, oh... yes, sorry, sorry. That is the beginning of my problems. The dwarf happily surrendered his body to the scientific arts anatomae upon his death. He signed the normal consent forms the University uses for such donations. I had it with me in my notes, but it went missing! Along with the draft of my paper and the accompanying anatomy sketches."

Gribb steps back as the Professor begins to pace in circles, oblivious to the caravan master. This is a longstanding habit, thinks the master. Bellerophon raises his right hand in a professorial mien, pointing at the sky with his index finger, whenever he makes a (to him) key point.

"It is not my fault that the ouat hadn't told his mage employer of his plans to donate his body to the Arts. But that is just an unfortunate coincidence, really, attendant upon and resulting from the pilfering of my work by one of the staff at the school. And the entombment cloth! THAT shows that this was perfidious sabotage! Why would I have entombment wraps? They are only used today when embalming and infusing the body with the energy of unlife -- uh, not that I would know anything about that really. Hehe, just, uhhh, something I've read in a book. Heh, yes, uh."

The chirurgeon scratches his beard again.

"The mummy wrap was planted there in my laboratory! PLANTED, I SAY! I will find out who did this! I will investigate this until Golarion ceases to exist and we all ascend Pharasma's Spire, I tell you! I shall discover the perpetrator and have my good name back, by Pharasma and Zohls!"

Jim Bob reporting in.

So far it looks like it is just me, Derek Lane, and Brett Turney in here. David Rooney, David Gloss, and Joe Chora, are you there?

What are everyone's character ideas? I anticipate getting started as soon as you each have a character finished. I will also shoot out a reminder to the two Davids and Joe, in case they don't see it here.

Grand Lodge

Jim_Bob is registered to David Gloss, not Brett Turney. Not sure if David G is going to create a new character and alias for said character or if Jim_Bob is it. No data in the Jim_bob profile.

Arcanist?

Dark Archive

Greetings to you all. allow me to introduce myself (he says in smooth unctuous tones as if comforting the berieved templing his fingers as he speaks).
My name is Rafaelis Reeves. I have been hired by our good caravan leader, based upon the recommendation of my dear patron Paracountess Zarta Dralneen, of whom you might have heard, and by the grace of "The All-Seeing Eye," to act as advisor to the caravan in matters arcane, historical, and religious. Matters of which I have no small acquaintance.
But almost as important, I am by profession what every caravan needs, nay, what every man needs in the end, a competent morturer. For I have found in my studies that the most important question for every animate thing in the multiverse is the question of "Life and Death," whose mysteries I will plumb to the core by the grace of "The All-Seeing Eye." (He bows his head in reverence.)

"My good man, well-met! I am Professor Taldus Bellerophon, lately of the Great University of Oppara!" says Bellerophon nervously to the rather sinister (to Bellerophon's eyes) wizard. "I assume, uh, you are in the business of destroying the walking dead, as am I." Bellerophon touches the incredibly obvious holy symbol of Pharasma adorning his chirurgeon's robes.

"You have heard, of course, of Pharasma, the enemy of all undead, in Cheliax? I assume you are from Cheliax, if you are a dedicated member of the paracountess' retinue. But, as I was asking, I'm not very familiar with Cheliax, never having been there. No doubt, The Lady of Graves and her church are present there, her being on civil terms with the Fiend."

Professor Bellerophon shifts his feet.

"You aren't a... practitioner of the necromantic arts, are you?"

Holy cow! The Occult Adventures playtest starts in 6 days! http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/occultAdventuresPlaytest

You could play a kineticist, a medium, a mesmerist, an occultist, a psychic, or a spiritualist! If anyone is interested in doing so, you have my blessing!

This looks cool!

I feel like they're pulling out all the stops to get people to stick with Pathfinder (or convert to it) in the wake of the release of 5e and the Adventurers League. Cheese for everyone! First robots, now kineticists and mesmerists and mediums? There aren't enough hours in the year to play all the good stuff that's come out in the last few months!

Scarab Sages

OK. I'm in. Not sure what I'll bring, Arcane, or crazy DPS Barb. With my time constraints I'm think high DPS low AC great welcoming committee.

I will have something by the end of the weekend if that is OK Art. If not I can pull something together faster.

Joe, this party is screaming for a spiritualist with a phantom. Who could be a better companion for a cleric of Pharasma whose experiments with anatomy have gotten him into trouble and a wizard fascinated with life and death but a caster who is in communication with the spirits of the dead? So long as everyone has a healthy anti-undead bent, just curious, the combination would be terrific!

My dear sir perish the thought of my violating the laws of Taldor or add insult to the former homes of intelligent souls by making them into macabre puppets of my will! Indeed what trust would my clients have if they were not sure I would ensure that their all too suddenly departed family members, business associates, or rivals did not remain remains? I do, however, through my studies have a versatile power over the formerly living, to either cause them to flee or bow to my will. Rest assured I would only use this power at need to turn the devices of an enemy against themselves. Once victorious, the unfortunate unliving thralls may be put down and the souls that formerly occupied these poor husks may have their well deserved eternal rest.
I am afraid you are quite mistaken in the assumption of my having any connections with Cheliax. I hail from a land that is a little further afield whose rulers are, shall we say, disinclined towards spiritual diversity. Point of fact, it is very unhealthy to participate in spiritual pursuits other than that of the state religion. Which brings me to why I am now an expatriate. You see in my studies I happened upon, "The Book of Magic," and was immediately overcome by an awakening to a wider world! I wanted more. In my quest for more, I became an undercover agent of the Pathfinder Society. Paracountess Dralneen was my handler. May I say on a personal note that she is every bit as competent a handler as they have back home. Such gusto! Such joi de vive! Anyway, operating in my land, nay living in my land is very dangerous! It became apparent that I would sooner or later get revealed. That and the neighboring lord of the manner had become more and more insistent on having me for dinner. My family has had to deal with his former dinner guests from time to time. Power over the undead comes in handy then, that and some stakes. He was not one to be forestalled long, and it put a crimp on my undercover activities to only operate diurnally. I became well acquainted with garlic.
Zarta managed to get me extracted and in a coffin no less! Delicious irony isn't it? She suggested that a traveling life would be best at the moment sending me here to this sunny realm far from the long shadows of my former life. Yet I keep up a healthy correspondence with her. Best to keep abreast of things.

Denge walks up to the group and plants his walking stick firmly into the ground and leans heavily on it, but it is obvious he does need it to support himself, it appears to be more of a conversational stance, as there is no need for this lean and spry individual to use this stick for support.
"Well met fellow travelers, my name is Denge. I am a simple traveler I am headed to the town of Belhaim, the destination of this very caravan. Working my way over seems the best way to travel."

"I could not help overhearing your discussion of eviscerations and "life and death", I think I have happened upon like minds."

" I too have a keen interest in the occult, but in a strictly spiritual, contemplative vantage. It is not destination that matters, but rather the journey, those ON the journey,"

(whispering loudly) "Denge. Denge. Can I speak to a moment."

So now we have a cleric of Pharasma (Derek), an arcanist necromancer (Brett), and a spiritualist (Joe). David and David, have you decided what you would like to play? Once everyone has a character, we can get started.

"Aaah yes, speaking of travelers. Allow to introduce a fellow traveling companion. She has been the victim of a terrible incident, of which we will not speak, suffice to say her appearance and methods may seem odd, but do not fret, she is a friend to all I call friend.

Penelope glides forward and nods to each party member in turn and to the ones who arrive later. It is apparent she afraid and confused, but determined to put on a strong face.

If asked questions she will rarely answer and will move closer to Denge, offering an apologetic smile.

There is something odd about Penelope, she appears translucent at times, and her eyes always have a far away look to them.

When you turn away from her and then immediately look back at her she is often in a different location having moved impossibly fast(if only a few feet), without any apparent effort.

Grand Lodge

"Ah, so nice to meet you, Mr. Fevor. And you, Ms....?" says Professor Bellerophon, obviously at a loss and not wanting to embarrass the lady or her gentleman companion.

He unconsciously grabs his holy symbol of Pharasma, staring at the ghostly woman.

Now would've been a good time to have listened to the deacons during their demonstrations of Turning Undead, thinks Taldus. His eyes watch the ghostly woman carefully and he can't help but wonder about this Denge fellow, polite though he may be. Consorting with undead...

"I, uh... I seem to have left something back at the, uh, cathedr-- i mean, my inn, yes, my inn, that's it. Left something at the inn. I shall surely return in all haste. No no, don't mind me. And don't go anywhere. No, huh huh, just, uh stay right there."

Bellerophon backs away, preparing to head back to his "inn."

Professor Bellerophon and Rafaelis Reeves, you may each make knowledge(religion) checks regarding Denge Fevor's travelling companion

DC 15 Knowledge (religion):
The companion is a phantom. It was once a sentient, living creature that must have experienced great turmoil in life or during death. The power of its emotional trauma ripped it from the flow of spirits rushing toward the Astral Plane and the fates beyond, pulling it through the Ethereal Plane and toward the Negative Energy Plane. During the decent to nothingness and undeath, the spirit was able to break free from its pull toward the nadir, and made its way back to the Material Plane to find and hide within the consciousness of a powerful psychic spellcaster. That fusion created a spiritualist.

Phantoms sometime retain some of their memories from life, but not many. Some phantoms wish to unburden themselves of their emotional shackles, while others just wish to continue existing while avoiding the corruption of undeath. Others still wish nothing more to inflict their torment upon the living—taking their revenge on life for the horrors they faced during and after death. Phantoms are powerful beings, but they are far more emotional than they are reasonable. Phantoms are still shackled by the emotions that created them, and the spiritualist must take strong control over her phantom to
keep its often-violent emotions in check.

Official Pharasma doctrine regarding phantoms is that they are not undead. They are strong spirits that, when confronted with forces that would otherwise have caused them to become ghosts or other forms of undead, resisted and fled to the Prime Material plane. Phantoms are objects of particular interest to the Church of Pharasma, as they occur rarely and may offer clues as where the borders between life, death, and undeath lie and how the creation of undead such as ghosts might be avoided.

Official Pharasma doctrine regarding spiritualists is that they are not necromancers. They are conduits for the manifestation of phantoms and students exploring the borders of life and death.

Pharasma is the shepherd of souls as they make their way from the Prime Material plane to the Outer Planes. Phantoms are such souls and worthy of the Church's protection. Spiritualists are the shepherds of phantoms and therefore are accepted and even sheltered by Pharasmins.

Secular authorities are less understanding of the nuanced differences between phantoms and undead and therefore often, mistakenly, assume phantoms are undead. Moreover, for the same reasons, in their ignorance secular authorities treat spiritualists as necromancers, even though any educated person knows otherwise.

"Yes, uh, don't go anywhere," as Taldus' blood runs cold at the thought of the ghost sucking the souls from the other caravan members.

Must get to the church immediately and get an inquisitor back here to banish this hell-thing, he thinks.

Grand Lodge

"Master Bellerphon, please do not go, there may be a misunderstanding here, and we will need your help and understanding should the caravan staff be less than welcoming."

Still whispering "Denge I would like to rest now, would that be ok?"

Grand Lodge

To penelope. "Yes, child.

Denge closes his eye and breaths deeply, Penelope fades, and with a barely audible pop, disappears.

When Denge opens his eyes there is a sadness in his eyes that was not there before, and possibly a slight twinkle.

"Master Bellerphon, let us talk for a moment, I believe you may have mistaken my travelling companion for a creature of undeath, which she certainly is not."

If Taldus allows, Denge will do his best to explain his understanding of his Phantom, explaining she is neither evil nor undead.

Dark Archive

Rafaelis watches the apparition Penelope and then the interchange between Prof Bellerophan and Denge Fevor intently. His look is cautious but not hostile. Rubbing his right eyebrow where one of his many piercings used to be before he removed them so not as to scare the locals (the visible ones anyway), He thinks to himself, “My are all these scholarly types this high strung? I thought university types were more agnostic in outlook? This one seems ready to throw a tent revival or burn something/one. Has he completely forgot I can turn undead? Still, healers are good to have around. Best to keep him happy. And what is this fascinating creature this Denge fellow consorts with?!? Is it indeed a ghost or some kind of spirit? Obviously “she” is not hostile, yet all my experience is with corporal undead, mostly of the ravenous variety, not the disembodied kind. Life has gotten more interesting! ‘Travel broadens the mind,’ said Zarta. Words to go by.”
He stops rubbing his eyebrow, then gestures with his left, which has a large signet ring upon it bearing an eye within a triangle,

Dear Mr Fevor, would you be so kind as to please include me in your instruction? I am quite at sea as to what to make of your companion.

Grand Lodge

"Yes, yes master Reeves, come. Let me tell what I know, offer what I hypothesize, and discuss what has yet to be discovered."

Denge moves some small rocks to form shapes and stand as markers in his discussion, and draws circles in the sand, explaining what he believes is the nature of his phantom and the path that lead her here, to be with him forevermore.

"I assure you she is quite harmless. Although, she is quite capable of defending herself."

Grand Lodge

"And you say she isn't a ghost?" asks Professor Bellerophon nervously. "She's a spirit who is lost, derailed from her rightful journey to Pharasma's Spire and the afterlife? What stopped her?"

Grand Lodge

"And more importantly, how do we send her onward?"

Guys, I don't want to sound rude, but you are posting in the recruitment tab of the campaign: thay way, your post are ending up on the recruitment forum. That is a little misleading, as you have already a complete party: could you switch up to the gameplay and discussion tab?

Again, it's not my intention to be annoying, just wanted to let you knoe that your posts are ending up in the wrong place. :)
