A Special Recruitment: Can You Play a Level 4 Wizard?

Recruitment

Hello, please allow me a moment of your time.
I’ve been running a game for over two years now

[url=http://paizo.com/campaigns/PalaceOfTheVampireQueen]Palace of the Vampire Queen]

One of the players was playing a very special character, Princess Stephanie, a Gnome Wizard who is the half sister of Maelodakh, the Goblin Barbarian

In this campaign setting, Gnomes are the offspring of a Dwarf and a Goblin. Stephanie and Mealodakh’s mother, a Goblin Witch, was once in a relationship with a Dwarf. Stephanie was born just before the untimely death of the Dwarf, and her mother was chosen to marry the Goblin King, then she gave birth to Mealodakh. The sister’s are often critical of each others behavior, but fiercely protective of each other as well

Unfortunately the player had to choose to drop out of the game.

I would really love to see this dynamic character continue on in this adventure.

Is there a Player here who would be willing to take over the Character?

Using the core build, spells and ability scores of the existing Character, but I will allow a change in traits and feats to help you make the character your own. You can create an Alias using any new variation on the Name Stephanie, so that the other characters know it is the same character

stupid late night posting

Palace of the Vampire Queen

This is the link, fixed now. Sorry

Well I guess not?

I had been looking at her posts but I only have a minimal grasp of her personality... Maybe some mlre of an explanation would help.
Unless she is going to suffer terrible psychological trauma, get struck by lightning or have her personality altered some other way.

I am leery of trying to ghost write another players concept of a character. However, having a character in one of your games already I can say I do enjoy your style of GMing.
I feel that you would at least be willing to work with me, and that as the rest of your group is both ok with a new hand and grasps the realities of such a task it wouldn't be all that bad.

As this game has been running for quite some time I decided to look up the players posts specifically rather than reading through years worth of post history.
This has given me a decent idea as to how the player ran the character but I have not yet found the time to look up every GM post concerning her in order to get the full detail of information about her, her family and how that all ties together.
Understanding what you as a GM, the other players would expect when it comes to the style of this character would be good.
So to echo Sedoriku would you care to sum up the princess for me?

Mechanically I see she is a terrain manipulator, grease web and other things to entrap or slow her foes rather then slaying them outright. Playing into the merciful nature she seems to have.
Transmutation and Conjuration are very fun schools in Pathfinder and ones I have quite a bit of experience with having played many arcane casters in the system. (like Ritmush as an example.)
I'd ask for permission to change (or retrain in game) the wizard school to something I have not already played utterly to death, but she seems acceptably 'wizardly' in concept beyond that.

In the hope of finding at least one person willing to step into the character’s role, I tried to leave the personality vague, but I can see both of your points.

The first thing to know is that the player started off from a place of little experience playing a Wizard, and so it was a learning experience for the player that translated nicely into to the character as a fledgling caster (“Stephanie” expressed, as a character, the player’s inexperience with being an “adventurer” quite nicely).

Stephanie is not consciously aware of (or simply chooses to ignore) the racial prejudice she has had to endure for her life (being the offspring of a Dwarf and a Goblin in this setting is difficult).

She tends to act like a protective older sister, even though Maelodakh is often quick to take offense to this behavior. Both sisters have an unspoken, mutual respect for each other’s talents.

The most peculiar thing about Stephanie is her status as a Princess.

You see, technically she is not the daughter of the Goblin King, (Maelodakh is). But it is possible that she took to the role as a reaction, a sort of self preservation tactic. She intends to prove that she is worthy of the title of “Princess’ and demands respect, not for herself, but for the honor her family deserves (this obsession she has with “Royalty” is a bit misplaced, as she mostly doesn’t understand the Goblin situation on the island, nor is she well versed in Goblin history). Stephanie was raised by her father’s family (who also happened to have connections to the Dwarven King) and it proved fortuitous, when her mother became the wife of the Goblin King, that she was able to be the one to introduce the Goblin King and Queen to the Dwarven King’s Daughter, thus opening up a potential dialog toward improving the Goblin situation on the island.

It was while traveling with her mother and stepfather (The Goblin King and Queen) and in the company of the Dwarven Princess that Stephanie was captured (along with her half sister, and all of her family, in addition to the Dwarven Pricess).

Stephanie has shown a genuine sense of indebtedness to the Dwarves and Miagnik, for rescuing her, and has dedicated herself to helping them bring an end to the Vampire Queen, secretly she must harbor a hope to find and rescue the others who were captured with her group.

Stephanie shows a conflicted nature at times, being simultaneously filled with a sense of her own importance, and at the same time filled with doubts about her ability to be strong enough.

One last thing that has been a complication for Stephanie is that all of the rest of the adventurers have Darkvision, and she does not (though we have allowed her to have a limited form of Darkvision to prevent her from being treated as completely helpless in the darkness of the Palace of the Vampire Queen).

I would allow any reworking of the Character's feats, Schools of magic, and other character traits, as long as some core things do not change (Ability Scores, Hit Points, Basic Spell List, and Familiar).

*shrug*
Honestly with years to establish herself Stephanie already has a personality. You are not looking for a player to put a new personality in her but to act within the confines of an already established roll.

This information is helpful to know as it means I can try and build my own concept of how those already laid down set pieces can interact.
With the set pieces I've got so far there is some territoty I can play around with a bit. Not what she is done, but more how she feels about what she ha done already.
that right there is where I get to start making decisions as the big pieces of history and relation connections are already set up.
I get to fill in the spaces between those set pieces with the hows and whys for that being the way she is.

As to the information in general, a fledgling moving into the realm of actual responsibility as she realizes the greater dangers and threats hiding behind the gilded legends of 'Adventurers'. Questing to thwart a vampire and plenty of self-doubt to try and roll over while she is at it.
Seems amusing.

Not really sure what else to add here, if nothing else I'd be happy to hear from the rest of your group as to their opinions relating to Stephanie.
Along with any questions, concerns or other what not.

Thank you, Movin, you sum up the problem very well.

I don't want to ask anyone to play the character exactly as I have described her, and it is, a framework. The player made 147 posts as this character. That, in my opinion, is not a lot.

At this point, I think I am asking too much, and will probably just have to let the character go, and rethink where I was going to send the story as far as she and her sister are concerned.

The party has just finished a good sized encounter, and they may be leaving the dungeon to re equip themselves, (level up to 5th level), and then delve back in again to try and confront the main evil of the adventure. So at this point I don't know how much fun a new player would have jumping into this adventure anyway.

This was my first PbP adventure on these forums and I learned a lot. Mostly I learned that Baldwin the Merciful is a master at this format, and I, honestly, am not very good at keeping a game interesting. I cannot seem to manage maps very well, combats are often tedious and confusing (and take far too long). I’ve learned a lot about what players expect, and a lot of the time it is not what I like best about playing Dungeons & Dragons.

If that is your decision I wish your group well. I'd still be willing to give it a shot if you would desire it.
I would agree that 147 posts is not a terribly large number for such a long time.

As to your self-criticisms, I would not sell yourself short. The fact of the matter is that while play by post games crumble all the darn time your first on these boards is still here. Now call that what you will but from the number I see die on this board I'd call that something significant.
I do agree with you on combat for PbP though, combats on PbP are ALWAYS tedious regardless of the situation due to the nature of sequential posting and such. Definitely not something you can equate to some flaw in your ability at all, combat sucks the life out of PbP's its just a thing that happens.

Anyway, best of luck in finishing out the campaign, hope your players stake that nasty lady somethin' fierce.

Tsk Tsk Terquem. I had thought rather the opposite of your DM'ing. It is a lot to take on, and I think you manage it masterfully. The combats I have been in have been awesome, and fairly clear - clarity is as much the player's as the GM's responsibility after all.

Movin sounds like they have the right of what is required, and seems a good fit - merely being interested enough to take it on is a plus, and the understanding of the needed moving parts, both mechanical/tactical and flavor/personality is high.

And again, in contrast to your summation, bringing in a new player as we leave/re-enter seems a perfect juncture at which to join the game for a new player.

@Terquem: Oh, and I would agree - your first PbP is STILL GOING after years... This is an achievement in and of itself. I have been in plenty that either crumbled before reaching 50 posts, or just randomly disappeared with absolutely with no warning from the DM who also disappeared. A number of games. Plenty.

Thank you for the positive feedback. I really hadn’t given much thought to the number of games that end. I am sort of proud of myself that I am not a quitter, and that I’ve managed to keep the game going (then again, I love Role Playing games probably more than a lot of people).

Movin – first let me say that the way you play Ritmush is spectacular. Even when you are being deliberately obtuse (a fantastic role play by the way, you pull it off without being an obnoxious player, and believe me I’ve seen a few of those types in 38 years of Dungeon mastering) you stay engaged with the other player’s and true to the situation and your character.

If you are interested in taking on the role of Stephanie, I would be honored, and I will do everything I can to try and make the transition into the game as easy, and as acceptable to your interests as I can.

Oh, and yes I should not be so hard on myself, but if there is one thing that gets me down more than most anything else, it’s letting other people down, and if I promise to run a game, and feel like I’ve let the players down in some way, it really gets to me. I love this stuff!

*chuckle*
I am always glad to point out the positive qualities in others, makes me feel fuzzy on the inside and lets me ignore the crushing apathy of the real world for a while.

@Maelodakh I'm glad to see that someone else agrees with me, that means Terquem is clearly the insane one here, sanity being consensus and all.
Any nuggets of wisdom for a poor fool about to jump in at the final arc of this Dead Woman's party?

@Terquem Hear that boss man! ya's been outvoted, yer'awesome an' Ritmush agrees even tho he ain't here.

I should also mention that the long con of making people get accustomed to Ritmush butchering the Common tongue only to find out that he is entirely capable of speaking with all the proper syllables will be quite fun. *shifty glance* plus other things.

That tangent aside I will say that I make no promises to my ability at taking on another players PC as this will be the first time I have done such a thing. However I feel I can provide an interesting character working in the lines provided.

Reading your creation rules it seems no one really bothered to ask on third party stuff much. I'd like to know if you happen to have a copy of the Kobold Press book Deep Magic. I got a copy earlier this year and the Illumination school of magic (star/celestial wizard spells) is something I've been hankering to play with.
It would be a really easy fit as an offshoot of your wizarding guild The hands of the four winds.
Sailors having stars as lifelines so it would be a natural extension for mages associated with them to find methods of drawing power from those celestial bodies.
Though it could also be the purview of the fourth mysterious guild *shrug*
Lemme know if such a thing sounds workable with the time table you have for the end of the story line.

@Movin – I do not have that, but it looks like something I will pick up in PDF form if I can. I think that what you are suggesting sounds very good (I am impressed you had the patience to read all that recruitment thread and campaign info to become acquainted with the Wizard’s Guilds of the setting, thanks!). As long as Stephanie’s already cast spells remain in her spell book, I think we can change her spell book to accommodate what you want to do.
