1 person marked this as a favorite.

Inspiration:
One of my favorite candies is Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Like them, I hope to combine two great tastes that will taste great together: Pathfinder & superheroes.

I'm thinking about running the 3rd book of the Adventure Path Curse of the Crimson Throne with superheroes. The idea came from the Korvosan vigilante Blackjack. I plan to start recruitment after my Fairhaven campaign finishes. The PCs have started the last crazy encounter, that may last a month in real life. We'll see.

Making good characters takes time. Making great characters takes time and inspiration. This interest check thread is to provide an opportunity to develop great characters and test my creation rules. Please get creative.

WELCOME TO GOTHAM KORVOSA
This third book of the Curse of the Crimson Throne is the debut of Korvosa’s first team of masked vigilantes, the PCs. Each PC has been cultivated and trained to varying degrees by Blackjack who is Korvosa’s original masked vigilante; however, Blackjack’s identity remains a mystery. While Blackjack behaves like Zorro, the situation of Korvosa appears more like Gotham City at the end of the movie Batman Begins. Field Marshal Cressida Kroft plays the role of Commissioner Gordon attempting to make things better with both hands tied behind her back.

CHARACTER CREATION
PCs in their masked personas have individually operated in the city sporadically without coordination over the past several months since the death of Eodred II. Blackjack began test running the new heroes, because the burden of Korvosa’s need during the blood veil plague was overwhelming for him. They certainly know of one another’s masked persona and their shared connection to Blackjack but have yet to be formally introduced. They each discovered some evidence that Blackjack integrated linking the queen to the introduction of the blood veil plague. Therefore, they are all minor enemies of the queen; however, they know that Blackjack works closely with Field Marshal Cressida Kroft. Each PC has met Field Marshal Cressida Kroft in persona with Blackjack.

PCs need superhero names as well as secret identities. Backgrounds should clearly explain their motivations and reasons for the secret identity. Don’t connect your backgrounds with another player’s submissions. Feel free to use knowledge of the first two books of Curse of the Crimson Throne to inform and illuminate your background.

The adventure begins a couple days after the failed assassination attempt on the queen.

Starting Level: PCs will start at 5th level with 1 Mythic tier
Alignment: Must be good alignment.
Ability Scores: 25 point buy.
HP: Max HP for all levels
Traits: 3 traits, one of which must be a Curse of the Crimson Throne campaign trait from the Player's Guide.
Base Starting Money: 20,000 gp. Make it easy for me to audit.
Races: Any race from the Core Rulebook is preferred. Players wishing to use additional Paizo-created races must request approval.
Classes: All classes from Paizo products.
Firearms: Firearms operate under the "early guns" rule.

cheers

Dotting for interest, and I'll be coming up with something a little more substantial later. XD

Edit: Are templates permitted?

Liberty's Edge

I'll need to rebuild, but here's the chassis. :-)

I have a question. In the Advanced Class Guide they published brawler and the archetype sacred fist. It gives your wisdom to AC as an extraordinary ability. Then monk gives you wisdom to AC as a supernatural bonus. Currently, as per RAW, they stack (for the likes of Pathfinder Society etc). Would you allow that to run in your game? If so, I totally want to play a rip off of the green arrow. Except more based off the Arrow TV series. He'd be a sacred fist of probably Abadar mixed with zen archer monk.

If PFS says the RAW stacks, that's good enough for me.

cheers

Given that it is intended to be a 'superhero' type game, are Synthesist Summoners allowed?

I have a Halfling Synthesist with the Childlike & Pass for Human feats that might fit rather well in this...

Yes, Synthesist Summoners are allowed.

Dotting for interest.

New Question; You say one of the three traits must be one of the Campaign traits from the CotCT player's guide. Varisia, Birthplace of Legends included a couple new Campaign traits for all the AP's set in Varisia, including CotCT, would one of those two be acceptable? On a related note, it has been a while since I read through that guide, but I thought I remembered all those traits being somehow or another tied to Lamm, is he still an active NPC?

Dotting for interest. ;)

I haven't thought about Lamm, but he's a plot hook. I could relax the campaign trait req.

We've a month to build potential characters so have at it. I initially had the campaign to have at least one plot hook. But you could always reflavor something.

I'm really interested to demonstrate if the 1 mythic trait is enough to emulate superheroes. Some people gestalt which I detest.

Cheers

For a truly superhero-like character? I'd say... proooobably not. Gestalt would emulate it, but failing that... *Indicates question above* Templates might work as a good substitute. Lycanthropy, elemental-infusions, possessed-by-whatever, metal clad... there are lots of options there, at least.

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Lost Omens, Rulebook Subscriber

Mythic tiers can emulate superheroics, fairly effectively; but you will likely want to determine what events might qualify as Mythic trials that will advance the PC's mythic tiers.

With enough tiers, yes... but with only one, it might not give that true superhero feel (though taking Legendary Item and having a lot of support from that might do the trick).

Giving us a month to build heroes, let's us see how super the heroes will be with 1 mythic tier and without gestalt, templates, or funky racial builds.

Cheers

Got it! ^^ And goodness knows that should be more than enough time to come up with something workable. XD

Liberty's Edge

Awesome here is my masked vigilant I built for council of thieves game (that died) it'll take little work to convert her.

Here is at least the basic outline of Irnk's character idea. The original idea came about in preparation for a Reign of Winter Campaign that then died.
It does bring up the question, does Korvosa permit Slavery? If not, that simply means his time as a slave remains in Cheliax, which affects the Campaign trait chosen.
This would be Grey's 'nom du Heroique' as-it-were.

Both will require a bit more work to bring up to your Character Creation speqs, considering they are presently built using 15 pt buy with no Mythic, but I will make those adjustments tonight or tomorrow, along with the background adjustments to bring him more accurately into this Campaign.

Besides character builds, what kind of heroes are you emulating?

* Jelani is building a Green Arrow (TV version)

How would your comic book read or TV episode show?
* Alex Ritous
* Xeno the Black Widow
* Grey, the Lady's dog

The setting is gritty like Gotham devastated after Batman Begins. Your characters don't have to be dark and gritty. You could make Thor or Captain America, too.

cheers

I've yet to decide! All I've really got is "More Batman than Superman" for this campaign - as in, heroes using skill and intelligence to thwart foes, rather than being a Flying Brick or having other kinds of utterly outrageous powers (like, say, Wolverine's regeneration). Personally, though, I'm definitely leaning "Legendary Item" as a focus of my character's power... I may still go for something a bit mystic, but I'll have to be very careful to seem truly heroic. XD

Liberty's Edge

I have a precognitive 'danger sense' like Spider-Man (aka a ridiculously-high Initiative) and fight with a rapier. Personality-wise, I'm excitable and not too bright but have a real heart for the downtrodden. I also have a glowing Clockwork Spy companion. :-)

Build: Diviner (foresight) 1 / Swashbuckler (mysterious avenger) 4 / Champion 1

I'll work on my guy as I have time. Not sure exactly how he'll end up, but parkour, the Arrow and martial arts heroes in general are my inspiration.

Jubal Breakbottle wrote:

DC's Captain Marvel, by way of Rudyard Kipling's Kim, with a splash of Ben 10 and Valiant Comic's XO Man-O-War.

There is an actual degree of disassociation between Grey and Great Mastiff.
Grey survived his enslavement and subsequent life by kind of emotionally 'pushing away' at life, which kind of presents as 'child-like', which aids in him seeming more like a human child than an adult Halfling. He's quite intelligent, but he conceals it by acting like a kid.
Great Mastiff, on the other hand, is very much a kind of 'four color' figure. Good for good's sake, so-to-speak. He is much more active, tends to get 'stuck in'. He is pretty much a brick.

I'm too full on games to throw in for this, but just wanted to say that I think it's a brilliant idea. I'll be watching the gameplay thread.

I made Blade for a bit higher power Gestal game and came up with a Dhamphir race for him as the paizo one I don't think fits what Blade is as a Daywalker. Would you be willing to look at custome races? For the game We were allowed up to 20RP, But I could nock him down to 10-13RP no problem. Here is the 13RP Version.

Day Walker:

Half Undead: 5RP
Medium Size 0RP
Normal Speed 0RP
Advanced 4RP (+2Physicals, +4wis, -2cha)
Standard Language 0RP
Advanced Strength 4RP

Moon-Touched Damage Resistance (3 RP): Prerequisites: None; Benefit: Members of this race gain DR 5/silver.

Resurrection Vulnerability (–1 RP): Prerequisite: Half-undead subtype or undead type; Weakness: A raise dead spell cast on a member of this race can destroy it (Will negates). Using the spell in this way does not require a material component.

Thirst (Blood Dependency) (-2RP) User must drink the blood of a living creature once a day or suffer 1 point of Strength and Constitution Drain per day. If he has not yet fed for the day he must make a DC 15 Will save to resist feeding at the sight of blood. The DC goes up by 1 each round.

I think I will try making up a Doctor Strange type guy. I think he is pretty doable sense it's magic and such. ;P

I would prefer no custom races at the moment. If we can't find 5-6 interesting hero characters with pizzazz, I'll consider custom races and templates.

cheers

I've got most of my crunch done now. I guess I still need to do mythic and a couple more traits.

Masked Hero of Korvosa

What did you decide about campaign traits, Jubal?

I'm open. Frankly, this interest thread is to verify if the creation rules can create fun heroes.

So what do you think about traits?

cheers

I think that we should just get two traits as normal probably. With the option of a third by drawback. Campaign trait is probably pointless at this stage in the plot.

Hmm, what about a Gambit?

Magus (Card Caster / Staff Magus & maybe Hexcrafter)? Perhaps with a dip in cartomancer witch (if only to get the non-destruction of your cards and the returning property)..

This is the basic crunch of the character I have in mind. No gear yet as that tends to take me the longest. Wish speedy summons did not have a 3rd mythic tier requirement. x)

DM:

I chose missing sibling both for RP purposes and crunch benefit. I used the updated version from the pfsrd. Was wondering if instead of gaining diplomacy and sense motive as class skills it could be diplomacy and bluff.

Dark Archive

I know someone has already mentioned a synth summoner, but I want to build Iron Man as a Synthesist Summoners. Should be a lot of fun.

I am not an expert in Mythic rules and do not own the book. Luckily I have time to read up. What does 1 Mythic tier actually mean. I note hat Slarus submitted a 6th level character, not 5th. Does it mean 5 regular levels and one mythic level?

Mythic tiers are not levels. They do not increase your HD, BAB, Saves, etc etc. So this guy is for all intents and purposes a level 5. You gain mythic tiers based on certain events, judged by the DM. They are not tied into level or experience, you can find a level 20 with only one mythic tier or a level one with ten mythic tiers. Even if that would be very loopy. Think of them more as bonuses as they act like it IMO. You get bonus abilities, feats, and powers based off tiers that stack on top of your levels dependent mostly on what path you choose. Maybe find someone better at explaining then me. :)

A Mythic Tier is about half a level's worth of power - though, as Slarus said, it's true that it doesn't give you things like bonus HD or BAB (although you do get bonus HP), so two mythic tiers together aren't a true "level" in the game. In general, though, it's probably easiest to think of them as an extra selection of powers - helpful at all character levels - that give you new options for overcoming problems... right up to and including changing fate itself.

Cool I love the idea. When we ran through COTCT I did Heromachine versions of the whole group of PC's in their BlackJack homage uniforms. I can't find them Probably on my old hard drive. It was cool cause no one really had the duelist feel so it was very different looks but all black hoods and masks. Like Assassins Creed but all variants in black.

I played in a PBP with this alias a couple months back it never really got off the ground. I would seriously need to tone DD back and have his back story that he never left Korvosa (that campaign has us gather in Abosolam). That GM like you said used Gestalt he also allowed 10 extra race points to emulate "super powers." Hence he has blind sight and the crazy billy club.

I will likely scale him back or build something similar that is straight slayer or slayer/monk.

I've played some mythic, and each tier increases APL by about 1.5 IMHO. The extra action economy and spells that are available make a big deal, especially vs. non-mythic opponents. This is why I want to see some builds of 5+1 mythic and 25 pt. buy, because the original AP wants 7th level and 15 pt. buy characters.

cheers

Alright here is my version of Batman. What do you guys think. 4 attacks a round seems good if I can trip them.

So I guess this monk and sacred fist is the new thing now to replace crane wing.

I'm actually going to withdraw. While the crunch of this game sounds really fun, I'm already in a Curse of the Crimson Throne game and I don't really want the spoilers. We're only on book one, so yeah...Good luck with this guys, I'm sure it'll be fun!

@Ashe, would you please map out those feats for me. I haven't seen so many classes taken in one character since 3.5

Sure here you go Trip and Reflexes were in the wrong order

Arcane Strike 1st
Improved Trip Bonus for Blood Conduit, Gives up fast movement and changes bloodline feats.
Combat Reflexes Bonus Fighter 1
Improved Unarmed Strike Bonus for Sacred Fist and Monk
Pummeling Style 3rd
Pummeling Bully Bonus Master of Many Styles

Vicious Stomp 5th

Mythic Feats:
Mythic Arcane Strike

There you go. I hated to break batman up so much but felt it was needed not being gestalt. This guys is capable of attacking someone 4 times in a round with a free trip and can parry an attack a round if he keeps regaining panache, and with Kata master he regains panache by criting or dropping an someone with an Unarmed strike. I would have liked him to be a little smarter for batman but I think it turned out good. I am running a 4th level version of this in a pvp capture the flag game Jelani is running and it kicked some but the first round, but that had a lot to do with things I bought. I think the plan would be another level of warpriest, 2 more levels of fighter and then the rest bloodrager.

The Exchange

Dotting.

Crunch wise Slarus is complete. Going to work on the backstory now. ;)

OK folks

I'm having second thoughts about running the standard AP. What would you think about an adventure built around the PCs? More homebrew but I would try to get the story arc done in a comic book length so to speak. In order to have this type of adventure be successful, we would need to have a colorful origin and nemesis for each character.

So, in other words, besides creating a character, we need your secret identity, origin, and nemesis submitted. I wouldn't mind building nemesis but feel free to sketch them out. It would also be better if you would provide a thumbnail scope of your character to frame the type of hero that he will be. For example, Batman without gadgets, Green Arrow without Trick Arrows, Hulk using alchemy, etc.

Lastly, how did it feel building the first round characters? Was 25 point buy, 5th level, and 1 mythic tier enough? I wouldn't want to go higher than 9th level, but this non-AP approach would make me more flexible to starting power level.

cheers

.

You...

May have opened up a can of worms...

Runs off giggling madly into the night.

Well, as long as the characters feel heroic within the world, I think it would be possible to do. XD I might at least go for one more Mythic Tier, perhaps with the idea of it representing heroic training/ability instead of an innately legendary nature (a small but subtle distinction), but it is your choice in the end.

More thoughts: I'm not looking for Avengers, Golarion's mightiest heroes. More street level like Batman, Green Arrow, or low level Xmen.

Also, your characters don't have to have been trained (like taking classes). They could have had something happen to them to give the 5th level powers over night, like being bitten by a magical spider...
