Veteran of Battle (new class feature)

Verdant Wheel

i'm trying to avoid the word 'exploit'...
the talent-style options below intentionally avoid generalized bonuses to attack rolls and saving throws, etc. they are designed to either expand on the amount of options available to the fighter, or to compensate for low skills points. this is also designed to interact with Bravery mostly as written, by applying the rising bonus to more than just fear saves.
comments and contributions welcome. enjoy!

Veteran of Battle (Ex):

Spoiler:

At 3rd level, and again every three fighter levels, the fighter may choose one mettle from the list below, reflecting the collected wisdom of his continued survival of martial conflicts. He may apply his bravery bonus to the skill checks and other stats outlined in each mettle.

Arms Tinker - the fighter gains a bonus to crafting arms and armor. He may choose the Craft Arms and Armor item creation feat bypassing prerequisites, and without the help of magic, may craft weapons and armor whose enhancement bonus does not exceed his bravery bonus. The fighter must be 9th level before selecting this mettle.

Athlete - the fighter gains a bonus to all Acrobatics, Climb, Fly, and Swim checks, as well as Constitution checks to resist fatigue from strenuous activity.

Battle Scars - the fighter gains a bonus to all Intimidate checks, may add his CON score to his Intimidate skill, and never himself becomes demoralized from Intimidation.

Born Leader - the fighter gains a bonus to all Diplomacy checks and to his Leadership score. Once per year, he may permanently negate a penalty to his leadership score for one poor leadership decision or outcome. The fighter must be 9th level before selecting this mettle.

Horsemanship - the fighter gains a bonus to all Ride and Handle Animal checks, and may teach his mount an additional number of tricks.

Know Thy Enemy - the fighter gains a bonus to all knowledge checks to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of his enemies, and may use any knowledge skill untrained in this way.

Discerning Paranoia - the fighter gains a bonus to all Perception and Sense Motive checks, as well as to saving throws to disbelieve illusions.

Survivor Man - the fighter gains a bonus to all Heal and Survival checks, and to all saving throws to resist deadly weather, and may use the Heal skill to treat his own deadly wounds.

...

01- Bonus Feats
02- Bonus Feat, Bravery
03- Armor Training, Veteran of Battle, Mettle
04- Bonus Feat
05- Weapon Training
06- Bonus Feat, Mettle

Sounds fun. A few of the ability names need work. ;)

Verdant Wheel

take 2 totally different.
incorporates accrued knowledge and being able to make preparations ahead of time.

Veteran of Battle (version 2):

Spoiler:

Fighters who live this long have seen it all. A 5th level fighter never becomes frightened or panicked - treat him as shaken instead for any such duration. He adds half his fighter level to all Knowledge checks to determine enemy capabilities, and may use knowledge skills untrained to this effect. Once per day, after a full nights rest and 10 minutes of preparation, the fighter may retrain any feat occupying his 4th, 8th, 12th, 16th, and 20th level fighter bonus feat slots. The new feats remain permanently set until the fighter chooses to retrain them again. He must meet any and all prerequisites of the feats he retrains into, and may pick up an entire feat chain so long he does. These are extraordinary abilities.

...

(meanwhile everyone else is getting spells)
(also, instead of half level, i am probably going to do 'equal to his expertise bonus')

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

Some of this sounds familiar :)

Note the Arms Tinker means he can't craft a +5 sword until level 16. I'd just use his BAB as his caster level for the check, and let him add weapon or armor training as appropriate. If he has Expertise, he can add that bonus as well (it's effectively enhancing his Intelligence bonus).

I'm going to check this out later!

Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes. This is the kind of thing the fighter needs - some OOC utility. I like the feat retraining, it's perfect.

Rainzax, as usual your stuff is pretty interesting. I like the first version of Veteran of Battle better than the second. Out of curiosity, how would this fit in with your rework of the Fighter that you came up with?

I can see it going pretty hand in hand with the Professional ability you created. I especially like the idea of Arms Tinker. And I disagree with Aelryith on that, I think it works as is because the Fighter shouldn't in my mind be as good at creating enhanced weapons as a magic-wielding blacksmith.
