So things I need to know about. Golgotha, PVP, Looting, Settlements

Pathfinder Online

My son and I are wanting to play this game together, so far Alpha has been amusing, however I still have some unclear information on this game.

My son is adamant on Golgotha or something or other... Weird he wants to be a partial crafting role too.

1. What is Golgotha all about, and their allied settlements? If you're not a member of either of these, please don't answer this question.

1a. Where does Golgotha & their allies plan on making their settlement?

1b. What types of Settlements are they going to be? As in what trainers can we expect to have, will there be a Marketplace/AH, and is it very crafter friendly?

1c. I hear from both my son and seen some things mentioned about Slave Trades in game. How does this work? What's the benefit to the player or settlement? and Will Golgotha participate? (note I'm not opposed)

1d. How do we join a settlement or a company?

2. Alignments? Are there alignments in game? I see some alignments listed on a map that was floating around weeks ago.

2a. Will peoples reputation effect their alignment if that is a thing?

3. PvP... So this world is a open world PvP. How will this work?

3a. How do you know who you can attack? Is there going to be some kind of faction style flags that you can identify yourself with so you're not attacked by members of your settlement or their allies?

3b. Player looting... Wow. Sucks if it happens to you but awesome if you're the winner. Not entirely sure how I feel about this. So in theory you can be hunted down for your loot constantly then? Does this include equipped items or just items in your inventory?

3c. War of Towers spans what 6 months? What exactly does this do for your settlement?

4. Reputation and how it pertains to me.. So if someone wanted to be an MMO bandit and repeatedly wanted to hunt my toon to loot him, what happens with his reputation?

4a. If your reputation is too low or your alignment isn't right or if you're not affiliated with another groups settlement, are you allowed to go there? What happens when you do?

4b. I see there will be someplace called Rotter's Hole for poor reputation characters. I need to get some more info on that to know whether its someplace to avoid or what.

5. How many characters can you have? How many accounts can you have?

5b. Is there a mail system? Will there be?

5c. Banks and how many slots can they hold?

5d. What will your encumbrance be based off of?

5e. Will there be ways to increase storage? Like bags/backpacks etc.. I see there is recipes for those types of items.

I'm sure we have more questions but these are the ones we thought of so far.

Oh and here is another. What is the meaning behind a low level recipe that calls for ingredients that can only be made from a high level crafter? That's some crap right there.

I remember in Star Wars Galaxies, a great sandbox MMO in its early days, that as soon as you found the mats you could craft your own stuff right off the bat. This crafting is complex and interesting, but will really turn off some people not being able to make most of their own stuff independently of another.

There is no design currently for slaving in the game.

Quote:
1d. How do we join a settlement or a company?

When the feature is implemented you will ask someone to send you an in-game invite to your character and then accept it. The functions are currently not enabled.

Quote:
2. Alignments? Are there alignments in game?

Yes, but Law/Chaos, Good/Evil not yet implemented.

Quote:
2a. Will peoples reputation effect their alignment if that is a thing?

Reputation is a part of the alignment system. It is orthogonal to the existing 2-axis tabletop system. In Pathfinder Online your alignment will have 3 dimensions.

Literally thousands of words have been written on this topic. The following is a very, very brief summary, just for Alpha/Early Enrollment. Many of our planned systems are not yet implemented.

You can attack any character anywhere.

If your target is not a criminal, you will suffer reputation penalties after you hit your target twice, and the reputation penalty is worse if your target dies. You will become a Criminal for a period of time when you are the aggressor and you kill another character.

Guards will kill you on sight if your reputation is negative. Individual guards will kill you on sight if you ever attacked them. They never forget and their hate is eternal.

Because the guards attack negative rep characters on sight negative rep characters have a very hard time moving around Settlements full of guards.

Most Feat Trainers won't do business with people with negative reputations which means you can't improve your character when you have a negative reputation.

Most Crafting facilities are closed to characters with negative reputations, which means you can't make new stuff when you have a negative reputation.

Your reputation slowly increases as long as you are playing the game and not doing things that reduce your reputation.

You are considered to have "attacked" anyone hit by your area-of-effect (AoE) spells. Even your friends.

The higher the reputation of your target, the more reputation you lose for attacking them.

Characters with red names are criminals and can be attacked without reputation penalties.

Quote:
3b. Player looting...

A blog is being posted today that describes the system that is going to be deployed in Early Enrollment.

Quote:
3c. War of Towers spans what 6 months? What exactly does this do for your settlement?

I don't think we've put a firm date on the end of the War of Towers.

During the War, the number of Towers controlled by Companies that are affiliated with a Settlement will determine how advanced the Feat trainers in that Settlement will be.

At the end of the War, there will be some meaningful value to having controlled a lot of towers at the end but I don't think we've been very specific on what that benefit will be.

Quote:
4b. I see there will be someplace called Rotter's Hole for poor reputation characters. I need to get some more info on that to know whether its someplace to avoid or what.

There are no guards in Rotter's Hole and the Feat Trainers only know very low levels of Feats.

Sucks to be a criminal.

Quote:
5. How many characters can you have? How many accounts can you have?

At present it looks like 3 characters will be active per account but that is still a work in progress. Only 1 character will gain XP at a time and you can switch XP earning at will. Logging in characters you are not gaining XP with is TBD.

You can have as many accounts as you want to pay for.

Quote:
5b. Is there a mail system? Will there be?

No. Probably not.

Quote:
5c. Banks and how many slots can they hold?

Your storage will be very large. "Slots" is an undefined term in Pathfinder Online.

Quote:
5d. What will your encumbrance be based off of?

When implemented, encumbrance will be on a per-item basis. Some small objects may weight more than some large objects.

Quote:
5e. Will there be ways to increase storage? Like bags/backpacks etc.. I see there is recipes for those types of items.

There will be ways, yes. Specific rules TBD.

Quote:

There's no reason that the harvesting -> processing -> crafting loop has to be symmetric. That's some not crap awesome game design right there if you think about the potential implications.

Yes, it will. That's ok.

EDIT: I feel silly now :P

1. No idea about Golgotha. Someone else will no doubt direct you to information there.

2. Yes yes and yes, basically. Settlements and companies have an alignment that indicates what types of characters will get along best there as well as how the settlement or company may function in the larger fabric of PFO.

3. Right now, it kinda doesn't because (as a PvE person) the reputation hit for killing or even attacking another player is too massive to be meaningful. That said, Ryan et al. (and the community supports this wholeheartedly) are all about making sure common PvP ills like ganking and grieving are thoroughly detered.

PvP is meant to be at both the players killing players level as well is the overall politics and economics of the game. Competition! Most PvP combat is intended to be meaningful- feuds, wars, faction rivalries, even banditry. Senseless slaughter is not going to be tolerated by the community or GW- it is a major reason many other open-world PvPs have failed. (EDIT: Or so I have heard on the forums.)

Flagging, etc. is partially in but should see fuller implementation as EE develops. EDIT: This may also be invalid based on what Ryan said???

Player looting will look like this: If you die, 1/4 of your inventory stuff is destroyed, period. The rest is available to be looted for a short time after your death EXCEPT any weapons, armor or other items you have threaded to your character. What is threading? I'll let someone else explain it. EDIT: But apparently the forthcoming blog will have current and solid information on this.

4. Probably go to the pits and stay there.

Yes'ish. The guards in some settlements will not attack low rep characters. Likewise, the trainers in some settlements will not serve low rep characters. Some settlements may even have a "kill on sight" policy towards certain known "criminals." The intention is for a world of possibility to be open in that regard. EDIT: I think Ryan's comments perfectly contradicted and invalidated this. Oh well!

Ryan D got there first, but here is the info on Golgotha.

Golgotha, Callambea, Mystical Awakening, and Bernstein are all part of the same Nation... the Empire of Xeilias. www.xeilias.com You can see where we will be located HERE And we are also part of the Northern Coalition.

Callambea will be primarily trade focused.

Don't forget... www.xeilias.com

Howdy, I'll try to tackle as many of these questions as I can. I'm one of the officers of Golgotha, and it's a pleasure to see such interest.

1. Golgotha is a Lawful evil settlement whose goal is military might and through strength of arms we bring peace. We are filled with a variety of different characters and stories, such as necromancers lead mostly by Deacon and House Karnath, to assassin's lead by Phyllain and the Bloody Hand, or the strong military that incorporates even Orcs! [Note: Orcs and Half Orcs aren't in the game yet, but we have a couple of members excited about playing orcs, The Iron Tusks lead by Guurzak]

1a. Golgotha is part of the Empire of Xeilias, and there is a wonderful Map http://aeonianleague.com/pages/PoliticalMap That shows who is in in that Empire. We also have a Non aggression Pact Known as the Northern Coalition.

1b. With our allies coordination, we expect to encompass all trainers, so whatever you needs are, you can be sure that they will be met in spades.

1d. To join Golgotha, visit our website at http://www.xeilias.com/index.php?threads/joining-golgotha.43/ and apply

I don't really know much about them.

I don't know whether they will participate. We have only speculative posts from the developers about the slave trade. I'm pretty certain the folks at Goblinworks haven't worked out any mechanical details yet. What we do know is that slavery is one of the few things that unites the various small nations of the River Kingdoms. They hate it. The game will reflect that, by giving slavers the Heinous status flag. Last time that flag was discussed, the idea was that anyone could attack someone with the Heinous flag, without fear of losing Reputation points.

1d. How do we join a settlement or a company?

Easiest way I can think of: You just did it. I'm sure someone will be contacting you soon.

2. Alignments? Are there alignments in game? I see some alignments listed on a map that was floating around weeks ago.

Alignments are supposed to be in the game eventually. Right now, they're not part of the game yet.

2a. Will peoples reputation effect their alignment if that is a thing?

The interactions of alignment and reputation look to be kind of complicated. Attacking other characters without surging that the game considers "just cause" costs you reputation points. Right now, there aren't any just causes in the game. Later on, feuds between player companies and wars between player settlements will be occasions when you can kill someone without losing reputation. There may be a few others, but they're still up in the air (bandits who have demanded money before they attack, individual characters who belong to factions like the Pathfinder Society or the Aspis Consortium).

Attacking people for no good reason seems like a great example of a chaotic evil thing to do, but anyone can attack people and lose reputation, and it should be possible to be chaotic evil and have a pristine reputation, if you only attack people when the game believes it's okay. Definitely complicated.

3. PvP... So this world is a open world PvP. How will this work?

Anyone can attack anyone at any time, but if the game doesn't see that they have good reason to do so, it will lower the attacker's reputation. Right now, a character with a low reputation score cannot train any skills until their reputation (very slowly) comes back up. Later on, the idea is that people with low reputation scores won't be able to train their abilities as much as people with high scores, and most player settlements will actually suffer mechanical penalties if too many of their members have low reputation scores.

3a. How do you know who you can attack? Is there going to be some kind of faction style flags that you can identify yourself with so you're not attacked by members of your settlement or their allies?

We don't know all the details yet. There will be some visual cue, like a flag hanging over the character, that signals that you're clear to attack that person without losing reputation. These flags aren't in the game yet.

3b. Player looting... Wow. Sucks if it happens to you but awesome if you're the winner. Not entirely sure how I feel about this. So in theory you can be hunted down for your loot constantly then? Does this include equipped items or just items in your inventory?

This is another thing where we don't have all the details yet. You'll be able to tie some things to you with mystical threads of fate. A threaded item can't be looted or destroyed when you're killed (unless all of its durability points are gone? One of the unknown factors). You'll only get so many threads, and more advanced items will tie up more of your threads than less powerful items. Eventually, you'll have to decide whether it's worth more to you too take all your best gear into combat, and risk losing some of it, or thread a couple of really powerful items, and equip stuff you don't mind losing in your other item slots.

3c. War of Towers spans what 6 months? What exactly does this do for your settlement?

4. Reputation and how it pertains to me.. So if someone wanted to be an MMO bandit and repeatedly wanted to hunt my toon to loot him, what happens with his reputation?

4a. If your reputation is too low or your alignment isn't right or if you're not affiliated with another groups settlement, are you allowed to go there?...

Edit: Looks like Ryan is helping out here, so I'll stop editing and go read his post (and scour it for any new tidbits of info).

Thanks for the quick response and answers!

Didn't mean to offend with the "crap" statement... I was just frustrated about how I could learn a low level recipe around level 2 and it required a level 7 crafter to make an ingredient for it. I had another that required I think a level 5 crafters ingredient for that one as well.

It's just going to take me forever to get to where I want to be is all.

Eigengrau, one key thing that should help with absorbing it is that it's not intended that anyone "get to where they want to be." We should always be reaching for more.

Its kind of a neat thing. Pathfinder Online has a number of subtle and a few not-so-subtle things that emphasise the design importance they are putting on this being a social game, and your dependency on others. There's a good mix of people interested in this game, some with a lot of experience across multiple MMO's. My experience is limited primarily to WoW. I'm not exaggerating in saying i've had more meaningful social interactions with fellow players in the last 2 weeks of alpha of PFO, then I've had in 3 years of a 400+ person active guild in WoW. As a person who designed characters previously to be independent and do a lot of soloing, I have found this new style to become quite addicting. Things are only in a rough state right now, but the potential for the future is really quite exciting.

Yeah, you also got to keep in mind that what may take an eternity in Alpha (because Alpha builds are short and quickly reset) will take a flash in EE and OE. Two-weeks to be able to make Coarse Padding is ridiculous for Alpha. Two-weeks in EE is perfectly acceptable. And a few days? A blink of an eye.

Plus the whole reliance on others thing.

Daeglin is right this game has many social aspect to it you are not meant to go it alone. Many games where you craft your low level stuff is never used beyond getting to the next level in pathfinder so many level of people have to interact with each other to make a product. In the beginning it be rough as we try to get the first group of crafter high enough to help the lower levels build what they need to. But think what it be like down the road a month or two were the synergy of various people will keep the economy going. Where it not just the top 10% of the crafter have something of value to sell every one else is racing to get there. I am really looking forward to my level 2 or level 5 resources being used by another player not just vendor trash.

What they have in minor excites me and I am so looking forward to it that all the little bumps in the road are just a minor annoyance. I have faith in Goblin Works and PFO.
