Alchemists in Reign of Winter

Reign of Winter

So my group has been playing this campaign and we are just about to face Nazhena before entering the Dancing Hut and something has been bothering me ever since this campaign has begun. Now I know that the player's guide specifically says plan a character that can do some sort of fire damage because of ice creatures and the such so my group has somewhat followed that. We have a human magus, a human druid, an aasimar oracle, and a gnome alchemist. As far as the group goes they have been doing pretty well. A couple hiccups with certain fights like at the clock tower and the Pale Tower the magus lost his barbarian and rerolled the class he has now.

But this isnt about the magus or even the druid. The alchemist has been a certain focus on each of these encounters as his bombs have absolutely teared through anything in this groups way. The player cleverly took Pyromaniac as his racial trait and the group is now lvl 6. So right now hes throwing 4d6 damage bombs and this added to the fact he picked up Precise Shot and Precise Bombs (oh and his Targeted Bomb admixtures. It seems like there is absolutely nothing I can do to stop this amount of encounter destruction other than go after him with anything I got lol.

So am I the only one that thinks alchemists are completely broken for this adventure path or is there something coming up that will eventually be able to slow this alchemist down?

Alchemists are pretty strong, but after book 2 being focused on fire damage isn't quite as rewarding - far fewer opponents will be fire vulnerable, and many will actually be resistant.

Heh. The white dragon at the end of book 4 rolls with 20 pt fire resistance. Your alchemist might do a lot worse there than he expects.

I did skim through book 3 and book 4 so I did see they have some challenges ahead of them. I am especially looking forward to Artrosa and their choice for the siege in book 4. I have a feeling they might actually take the neutral path considering the choices so far.

This is my first time dealing with an alchemist player so I never expected I would have so much trouble making a challenging but fair encounter for him. I am just worried that he will be carrying the team too much with just the bombs.

The best way to deal with alchemists is with multiple targets that are dispersed (ie, five foot space between each one). Also summons. Nazhena, for instance, could summon several wolves that will be right on top of the alchemist. If he tries to throw? Several attacks of opportunity against him. ;)

How many bombs does he have? Surely a 4d6 bomb only takes away about half the hit points from an ice troll and there are lots of them

It is important to note that even the author thinks books 2 is potentially easy with its encounters. Especially the Dragon in the tower that is too weak for an end of chapter boss when the whole group is level 6.

It probably also doesn't help the whole group has found access to fire. I don't remember the guide specifically saying this, more that it would be useful. I would thinks once word got around about people chucking fire round in the winter city there would be extra guards added to patrols and they would come down hard.

I definitely would have nazhena have learnt about their powers, either through mirrors in the tower or messangers in town etc.
Give her some anti fire measures even if it is just a resist elements potion. Makes them think of another way...

The only thing im not too afraid of is the alchemist just one hit KOing things. The ice trolls had enough hp to survive a couple bombs it was just when my other party members went up to guard the alchemist there was little I could do to stop him from continuing to use them. Hes been playing really smart and so has the group so I am not really disapointed that they have been having little trouble with encounters. When hes conserving the bombs the battles are actually a bit more balanced which is nice. The dawn piper fights made them think a bit as to what they should do so that was a bit of fresh air from the typical "Throw Bomb-Tons of Damage" routine of some of the easier fights.

As for Nazhena I do plan something interesting as she has taken a huge interest in this party ever since they killed Radosek and then proceeded to destroy her tower cause they thought it would be the best way to send a message. I had hoped to get them with the mirror men but they proved to be pretty smart and attract little attention...at least until they got to the clock tower and decided to set fire to it after killing the dragon. So yeah Nazhena knows they are in the city now and what they look like (courtesy of Granny Nan having time to send a message to the current Witches in the city). With her status as a White Witch I am sure she could find plenty of ways to prevent fire damage or at least resist some of it.

Again just really looking forward to book 3 cause personally I think thats where it will slow back down and hopefully the other PCs can step up a bit as well.

Like I said just give her a potion as part of her gear. There is no way she wouldnt know about the risk of fire damage by now. Especially if a building was set on fire.

Even if no one told her I'm pretty sure the forest isn't enclosed overhead so she should be able to see it (can't remember about the forest tbf but if it is enclosed it should all be dark and this isn't mentioned )

The Wood where the Hut is kept is completely covered over. You can't fly in or anything.

To be honest, I'm surprised no group ever thought of that. Fly a half mile up with Extended Fly spells and then drop into the center of the city. When you consider how small a person appears even 500 feet away, I don't think there'd be much notice of four or five people dropping into the city that way. That said, they'd not get to the Hut that way in any event.

Oh ok I forgot about the wood part.

Are the pcs high enough level to cast several extended fly spells at this stage of the adventure? Again I can't really remember.

Neither of my groups wizards had or have the spell.

But regarding the alchemist if the concern is the group is performing tactically well then you should consider increasing the difficulty of all encounters.

Although I will note that book 2 is considered easy for the level of players and book 3 is considered difficult. The dungeon in book 3 is tough . Several potentially lethal encounters there (from my experience the hag cleric and upasunda (sp)). Also the shadows look horrible and there is lots of SR and resistances floating around. And things could get worse if they upset the warden

Well with my experience with this group they very much hate constructs cause they just don't enjoy dealing with them. The columns in the tower for example. The alchemist used a lot of bombs to try to do anything. And yeah I agree the shadows just look absolutely horrible for this group except for the oracle probably. If anything this campaign so far has showed me that I should really consider the class choices as well because I never expected the alchemist to be a huge counter pick to the majority of enemies in these 2 books.

I'm going to start GMing Reign of Winter in the New Year and this discussion is pretty interesting. We've been playing Rise of the Runelords and Skulls and Shackles, and one player has been pretty fire-focussed with his character choices. It wouldn't surprise me if he continues with the theme for ROW.

What happened when they came across the goblin alchemists when they got into the Howlings? Did you put any additional fire-resistant monsters in as random encounters?
