When are mermaids and centaurs coming?

I can't wait for the mermaid and centaur playable race options. Could we also get a way to change your biological ancestry to one of those (be it through an elixir or a ritual)?

Ariel got a magic potion to give her legs, perhaps we could have an elixir that does the opposite? (In a way that is lasting, unlike in the movie!)

wait wut

I'd be down for it, but it's really up to Paizo's stance on polymorphing. They've done some interesting things with it in the conceptual arena, but it feels like they're very... careful, when it comes to implementing them mechanically.

No Polymorphs! Bad Polymorphs, shoo! Shoo!

Polymorphs are anything BUT lasting. I am sorry, but transforming for 1 min/level feels closer to a costume, than a character transformation.

I want to stay human/mermaid forever and ever and ever!

As I said, mechanically careful. It isn't very exciting, is it?
Unfortunately, filling a similar space tends to lead to splash damage.

I had a player ask me if her witch could use spell research to make a spell that "aimed" the Reincarnate spell. I thought it was cool, and it wasn't that far off from the spell Reincarnate Spy, so I gave her the go ahead.

A bit morbid, but those poor, unfortunate souls might be up to helping advance our understanding of magic. I'm sure it's perfectly safe.

I used Reincarnate Spy a lot in PF1. It didn't feel right to kill people just to revive them story-wise. My character went through a 'burn out' phase because of that. I am hoping things get better for her in PF2.

Centaur is one of my favorite races in any game. In PF1 they got kinda OP :P, hope they are more middle level and common now in PF2.

One could consider including deviations from the standard biped in core materials for the same reason as the alchemist: so that systems (looking at armour and magic item types) can be designed with them fully in mind.

I could see the polymorph lasting until a condition like dispel magic or a being hit with a bucket of salt water were met. LOL

Similar to a 'fairy tale' curse. Traditional curses have a built-in removal clause that requires no magic. ;)

Seeing how niche it is, I'd not hold my breath waiting.

The first thing I intend to do after reading the official playtest in August is start building PF2E Races/Ancestries of my PF1E favorites. One of those is the gillfolk (gillmen). I hadn't really thought about merfolk, but mechanically they wouldn't be too different from gillfolk. PF2E Centaurs shouldn't be too difficult to do either.

Dispel Magic, Wish and Miracle were the three plagues of PF1.

If hindered this way I wouldn't even bother.

Hey, if we can get fish-people and horse-people, what about a little bit of love for us bird-folks, eh, eh?

:>

Agreed.

I have a feeling an "Elixir of Race (Ancestry) Shifting" would cover all of our needs. :)

I'd be surprised and disappointed if merfolk weren't in the Bestiary... and since it's rumored to be twice the normal size, they should be able to spare us a few pages for ancestry feats and such. ^_^

As for centaur, I'd be extremely in favor of making them (along with gnoll) a valid monster ancestry. They're a classic ancestral fantasy archetype, and it'd be nice to get to play one properly. (Though I did find a late-era PF1 option that worked well enough.)

Please allow us to get wild and crazy with player races as per Starfinder.

Monstrous races are where its at.

Something I thought about was how humans, oddly enough, are the second biggest ancestry in core, and that feels kinda weird as they're typically supposed to be more average? (Okay, by height, they're fourth after half-orc, elves, and half-elves, although if somebody wants to play a larger race, the latter two likely won't really be what's desired).

In any case, having centaurs can help with more diversity.

Perm monkeyfish? Yeah sure add merfolk and centaurs. No tengu tho.

Tengu are edible ... merfolk are edible ... centaurs are edible ... works for me.

If you've got sharp enough teeth and a cast iron stomach, anyone is edible if you're daring enough.

What about Mer-Cent-Pig? Half merfolk, half centaur, half pig.

I bet if I swap the pig to goblin, I’d be on to something, especially if it was a Paladin...

Maybe for a Disney expansion/campaign setting book.

They will soon own D&D, unless Richard Branson gets there first...

I've been running Disney-themed Mutants & Masterminds games at GenCon for four years now.

Doing it in Pathfinder wouldn't be much more difficult.

A weird thing about PF merfolk: the picture in the ARG and the deep merfolk in B5 have eel-like tails. This actually implies a completely different evolution than the standard depiction. Most times you will see a picture of a merfolk, the fins on the tail are horizontal (likely owing to the original sightings being confused sailors encountering aquatic mammals like manatees). There is no evolutionary reason why all the tail muscles would rotate 90 degrees, and the intermediary stages would not be the best thing either (and if the aboleths or whoever performed magical fusion, why go through the effort for something pointless?). If merfolk are of fish descent, we would expect vertical tailfins like actual fish. Even if they would be lying on the seabed frequently, we would expect vertical but asymmetric tailfins like these guys have. The only reason to have horizontal flukes is if they evolved from legs (which would be built to move vertically because it's required for walking).

Maybe if we get merfolk as a core ancestry, we'll get more details on the distinction between the eel-tailed ones that have always lived in the water, and the ones whose ancestors got far enough inland to produce feet before returning.

What about family guy mermen?

Considering that we created the Book of Heroic Races: Advanced Compendium with merfolk as a playable race, it would not be a bad idea to watch JonBrazer.com for the month or so after the playtest goes live. Just saying.

Amphibious special quality/racial feature ... maybe they choose gender when the need or moods suits them after certain amphibians IRL. :P

I would rather keep such abilities in the realms of Elixirs, Rituals and Potions which are available to everyone and not just members of the "lucky race".

So long as the effect is instantaneous, should be good to go.

I was wondering about mixed ancestries as well, maybe not for the CRB but doesn't the term "ancestry" implicate some possible mixing? (Which seems pretty usual looking at all the optimized sorcerer builds, with two race unrelated bloodlines and some eldritch heritage for good measurement.)

You could choose one ancestry and gain another as an "Archetype" to add additional ancestry feats. That wouldn't work for Tengu, Kitsune and so on or all the other full blown races.

But again some races make this idea intriuging like Drow (as an option for Elves and Half-Elves), Aasimar (Gnome, with some Elysian Ancestry would be very nice and flavorful), Dhampir, Tiefling and so on.

According to the twitch.tv interview, we learned and inherited ancestry feats will be separate (you can play a dwarf raise by elven parents for example).

That's why I feel like giving us an "Elixir of Ancestry Change" is something Paizo could do to make me very happy
(or at the very least an "Elixir of Fins/Hooves/Legs" ^_^ ).

I was referring to the movie Splash were Daryl Hannah's mermaid could walk around as a human but once she was splashed or sprayed with salt water she instantly reverted to a mermaid. Eugene Levy's scientist did this to prove the existence of mermaids

Nice, of course Eugene Levy and John Candy (drinking beer and smoking while playing racquetball, remarkable) are the only excuse for watching that movie.
