I'm one who, as far as I can tell, never moves much beyond FOO strategies. "Practicing" enough to become good at a game has usually been a self-defeating idea; I lose interest in most games for a while, and then come back (rinse and repeat), but my return to skill-requiring games has rarely been successful.

My skill atrophies, I return to the game, quickly discover I no longer have a clue how I used to do whatever-it-was I was doing at the time I quit, I can't keep progressing without skill, and I've no interest in going to an earlier--easier--part of the game to re-learn. It's probably that I've never been able to think of games as much more than distraction/relaxation/escape, and thus they've not been something I'm willing to "work" at; work is what stops when I start playing.

FOO strategies have almost never disappointed enough to drive me from a game by themselves. I understand they can reach a point where many consider them "cheap" or "repetitive", but those descriptors fail to bother me :-).

I'm not sure but it seems to me that opportunities should not appear in the quickbar if we are supposed to be noticing details in the opponent. I imagine it hurts nothing to have the tell-tale in the quickbar until we habituate reliance on it. If I'm forever focused on the cool-down indicator and opportunity tell tales down there it is like encouraging the hunt and peck method of keyboarding. Yet lighting up the opponent with particle effects would look pretty hokey... so I'm not sure of a solution.

It's probably worth noting that neither the Basic Attacks nor the Basic Exploits apply any Effects.

Are you sure? I thought Basic Attack with Longbow put Opportunity on pretty much every mob I hit. Followup shot with Basic Exploit then allows +50 damage with Opportunity resulting in 2 shot kills vs. most white level mobs. At least, that seems to be my experience so far. If they are getting Opportunity from another reason, I'm curious what it would be?

Edit: does the act of mobs trying to distance close cause Opportunity?

Yes. Movement causes opportunity, so as they close in, they are getting opportunity on them.

Most longbow and other ranged attacks also cause opportunity on the attacker, not the target.

Ah. Thanks for clearing that up.

I like that we get an opportunity and flat-footed marker on ourselves and the targets. I don't think having us look for tell-tale signs would be appropriate. Then the game becomes about "who can find the information" instead of about "who can effectively use the information."
