Complete Noob Questions

Pathfinder Online

I just stumbled onto this game today and I'm blown away by the vision. I read over everything on the website and have a couple questions if someone can assist:

1. How do I play? If I understand correctly, it'll cost me a cool $1000 if I want to play today. I doubt my wife and six kids would approve that level of extravagance :) If I wait a couple weeks, it will be $100, correct?

2. Is there any trial/demo/buddy key access so I can give it a whirl before plunking down a large handful of dollars?

3. Please dear God tell me I can invert the mouse Y-axis. I know this makes no sense to many and even some developers, but is a deal-breaker for me.

Thanks!

1 : 1000 to play in the alpha, so not really necessary. Especially because you will not have a hard time getting a free invitation, I think. You can always pay 50 bucks, to wait for October, the game will have a few updates then, and you will not be behind everybody else in a significant way.

2 : If you get an alpha invite.

3 : Not for now I think, but only devs can answer that. I completely understand, I am heavily disabled, and a lot of things I ask make no sense to a lot of people.

1. No problem paying the $50/$100, particularly since it includes game time. The $100 will start later in September, right?

2. How do I get my greedy noob hands on one of these suckers?

3. Bleh. I haven't seen an MMO without invert in years until I messed with another big MMO that is releasing right now. A game has to be freakin amazing for me to fight with my mouse while playing.

100$, 22 September for now, but we can't be sure. A lot of players would like a 1 month delay, to have a neat launch, but it's up to GW.

Well, you must convince someone, to give you one. :p I already distributed my 12 invitations, but I know there is still a lot of invitations around. You can always create a thread to ask, if you are convincing enough, maybe you will get lucky. :p

We got so much invitations, in some companies, that all our members and friends are already in the alpha. I myself gave my 12 invites to perfect strangers. So honestly, you really have your chances.

I can't verify now about to the invert axis, but you can always create a thread to talk about it, we have very responsive developers.

1) Yes as of now late September is when at least the 100$ EE package is slated to start.

2) Check out a few Alpha invite threads here, there have been more invites going out as of late than users begging for them, and every week more invites are being generated.

3) There currently is VERY little customization of controls, but I imagine in time all the various features you'd expect will get packaged in and made available.

Thanks for all the help guys. I'll scour these boards looking for an invite. Assuming I can get in and mess around, I expect to pony up some dough for the EE package and harass developers about controls soon.

Welcome to PFO, GrandpaDJ! Here's the most-recent thread with a lot of activity in giving away Alpha Access.

Welcome/Aloha GrandpaDJ.

Just curious, where did you stumble by PFO, first? And bonus question, what in particular concerning the vision caught your eye?

I ask, so as you can contextualize the questions, because it provides me with an idea of who is drawn to the idea of PFO at this early stage any what about it they feel compensates it's vestigial current state of development.

3 people marked this as a favorite.

mmorpg.com had a thread concerning the latest news on PFO. First time I had heard of the game. I love gaming, but work full-time and more, am married, and have six kids between ages 20 years and 10 months. Free time is often fleeting.

Vision - a true sandbox that I can be part of as it grows. Earlier in life I spent a few years in software development and still love the idea of creating a world and being able to do anything inside. I no longer have much interest in the actual work, but am glad to play a game and share my thoughts while others do the hard stuff.

Bonus comment: so far, the community seems top notch. No one in a WoW forum ever used the term 'vestigial'.

Welcome DJ, may I call you DJ? :-)

You seem to be well informed. if you have other questions, these boards are much better then others so you should be able to get a good and quick response. The Devs are also quite helpful and free giving in information they feel comfortable giving out that isn't subject to change much.

As other said, I wouldn't suggest the $1k investment simply because alpha is nearing it's end and you would be very limited to get your money's worth (IMHO). Instead look at the $100 and $50 packages. They get you in game for the EE "launch" and give you some prepaid play time.

Just a heads up if you do get into alpha, make sure to read the most recent blog for an update as to what is going on in alpha. exp is currently being earned at 50x the normal rate, so don't get used to it LOL. Achievement points are handed out so no need to get them currently, but in EE you will need to go kill stuff and whatnot. Also, there are several bugs and issues that are being addressed and worked on. Things like recipes that are bugged and can't be learned, as well as drop rates for some items not working correctly.

Basically....it is alpha. I know some people get frustrated with it because they forget it is alpha and things aren't finished and I didn't want that to happen to you.

Last piece of advice: join a settlement. Once you have an idea of the type of character you want to play and what alignment you wish to emulate, you can look at the land rush, as well as the various recruitment threads here to find a home. You will want to join a company and a settlement to best support yourself. Besides, this is an MMO, go make friends. :-)

Adding to that, there's no non-disclosure agreement for PFO, and here's the link to a lot of available spreadsheet-type information: PFO Public Data

For future reference, though, Goblinworks's said they intend to keep the $1000 package available, and to add value to it to make it an on-going proposition for folks who want to spend that kind of money.

Welcome! I think you'll find there is a fair number of us here who have similar personal lives :)

In regards to Question 3, there is this thread about reassigning keybinds, and includes mouse buttons bit further down than the comment linked to. Not sure whether that allows changing Y-axis or not, but might be possible. It involves editing a file but seems pretty straight forward; no graphical UI for it at this point in the alpha. At some point i'll be changing to esdf.

Goblin Squad Member

Thanks, Daeglin. I forgot to look in that file.

Keybinds are in \Pathfinder Online\Pathfinder Data\Keybinds\default.player_settings.ini. I don't see anything in there about axis-swapping per se, but it seems a reasonably generic keybinds file, so perhaps someone who knows he needs to swap axes (hint hint) might have learned, in the past, how he can give the Unity engine that command?

Thanks OP, such feedback is worth knowing, I'm sure there's a successful market segment for PFO and it's a question of where to scan for it.

My bros are married with young families and they are always asking me over to "visit". :)

What do you mean by "invert Y axis"? Do you want your mouse cursor to go up when you move your mouse down?

Goblinworks Executive Founder

He wants to look up when he moves his mouse down, like in a plane.

Goblin Squad Member

ARGH I need this option to, did it get added? I understand from other games that it's a simple option to add in? (I recall requesting it on another beta and it was added that day in the next build just for me)

HELP! :-)

Daniel.

I cannot play without having the Mouse Y axis inverted. My wife's the same way. I'm just wired that way - looking down when I meant to look up gives me terrible motion sickness.

It's frustrating that this feature, which has been in every game I've played with a mouse since DOOM, isn't in the game.

It would be easier to take during a free testing or trial period, but unless I'm mis-reading something I am now paying to play and physically can't.

Sovereign Court Goblin Squad Member

The only way to currently change keybindings can be done following instructions found here. I don't see anything about inverting the mouse axis though.

Try posting a request here.

There seem to be native mouse-inverters: here is a question someone asked about that: Windows 7, how can I reverse mouse movement

Here is the page of the inverter software: Mouse Inverter.
Be sure to push on the correct download button (to the right) since this is a page where they hope you push theother download buttons first so you get to see another product/add. Not a fan of such website but usually you get your piece of software NP.

I think this could work in PFO, possibly windowed mode, or it could cause all sorts of problems and blow up your computer so use at your own risk. :)

Just wanted to say that your problem is not unique and people are looking for these inverters since some games do not give the option.

Here is another such question for a person who wants to play Prince of persia: Another question.
That brings you to another piece of software but that is only for up to WinXP.

I did not search for long so I am sure there is a lot more out there.

Goblin Squad Member

Thanks, Tyncale, but that won't work. I don't need the mouse inverted for all things all the time, just the Y axis for camera control.

If I push the mouse away from me, I expect the pointer to move "up" towards the top of the screen, just like everyone else. BUT, when I push the mouse away from me, I expect the CAMERA to tilt "down." For people who need Y inverted, it's like the controls on a plane: stick forward = nose down. We're just wired this way, and computer games since 1996 have been accommodating us.

I guess someone at iD software used their mouse the way I do, but no one at Goblinworks does.

It IS possible, though. I bought a weird little Myst-alike called Kairos that's built on the Unity engine, and one of the very few options it has is "Look Invert." If that can do it, Pathfinder On-line really ought to be able to as well.

Goblin Squad Member

Ah, yes, I understand. I have the same, first thing I do in a new game is "Invert y-axis".

I am not sure why, I think I started doing this in Everquest, back in '99. I am thinking maybe this was the default in Everquest back then?

In any case, your description of the plane-controls is exactly how it feels for me. But I have been playing with an un-inverted y-axis more lately so I guess I managed to adapt to it.

Hope that other thing works for you.

You actually get the same problem in real life if you convert from 3 axis (pretty much any conventional aircraft)to a trike ultralight. Pushing the bar forward on a trike has you climbing which can be rather counter-intuitive at first.

To be honest (and being an occasional recreational pilot probably factors into this) I have always found the push forward to look down more intuitive. For me pushing forward is like leaning forward which in real life has you looking down and pulling back on the mouse is like leaning backwards and hence looking up.

Regardless though - the game really should allow Y axis inversion becasue if you are entrenched in one control system it can be very hard to change.
