PFO voice overlay apps?

Pathfinder Online

Goblin Squad Member

Does anyone know how to configure Overwolf or any other voice overlay apps so that our group can speak to each other while playing Pathfinder Online?

Thanks

I don't know overwolf, but ts3 doesn't conflict at all.

Overwolf is an add on to teamspeak. You get a little fox head icon in the channel.

Goblin Squad Member

Is Overwolf one of those apps that shows you who's in your channel, lights up when their mic is open, and overlays a portion of the game client so you can see it even when you're running the game full-screen on a single monitor?

Goblin Squad Member

I think so, but you have to manually add PFO to a file it uses because PFO is not supported.

Help please.

Sorry, no can help here. I use vanilla TS3 these days.

Did TS3 pretty much win the battle against Mumble and the other voice chat programs?

Goblin Squad Member

I believe Cheatle was attempting to use both Mumble and Teamspeak simultaneously earlier tonight, but with different folks on each. I know he kept asking the TS-folk whether they wanted to come join Mumble, possibly to simplify his incipient split personality :-).

Juggling multiple voice comms is a pain in the ass, I understand his pain.

KarlBob - TS3 is best product in class imo, but Ventrilo still has a foothold and Mumble exists for peasants who don't want to pay money for a better solution :P

Kadere - Good to know. For a while there, Mumble looked like a serious contender.

I found Mumble has the best voice quality of any voice chat software I've used. It also has probably the most technically challenging client-side configuration setup. I expect these two things are related.

TeamSpeak has the best features - by far.

Ventrilo seems outdated to me.

I had the same experience when I used it a couple of years ago.

I agree - Mumble's voice quality is very good, better than Ventrilo, though I'd be more likely to call it not as good as TS3. Maybe that is a reflection on the servers I have been though, perhaps my experience is with the less impressive codecs.

But Nihimon has hit the nail on the head - I value usability very highly, because trying to get a player unused to such things to login to TS3 is hard enough. For mumble, it is practically impossible.

Ventrilo hasn't changed appreciably since the days of Call of Duty 2, so there's that.

Goblin Squad Member

Having used both vent and TS3 extensively, and admittedly mumble just a few times,

I'm a huge fan of Team speak, and prefer it over the others for a very good balance of usability, customization, and quality.

Bringing us back to the OP's question, has anyone configured Overwolf for PFO yet?

Goblin Squad Member

A configuration file for Overwolf is mainly what I'm looking for.

I found these instructions, but not sure what to do next.

If you want to test it out by yourself, scroll all the way to the bottom of the game list file, and you will see a block that looks like this:

<ID>9999999</ID>
<GameTitle>Dummy Game For Testing</GameTitle>
<ProcessNames>
<string>ExeThatShouldNeverBeFound_OW.exe</string>
</ProcessNames>
<LuancherNames>
<string>LauncherThatShouldNeverBeFound_OW.exe</string>
</LuancherNames>
<GameRenderers>D3D9</GameRenderers>
<InjectionDecision>Supported</InjectionDecision>
<LauncherDirectoryRegistryKey>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Valve\Steam \InstallPath</LauncherDirectoryRegistryKey>
<XPSupport>NotSupported</XPSupport>
<Input>DInput8</Input>
<FixDIFocus>true</FixDIFocus>
<FixRCEx>True</FixRCEx>
<UseMH>True</UseMH>

You need to change the following:
Dummy Game For Testing - Replace this text with the name of your game.

ExeThatShouldNeverBeFound_OW.exe - Replace with the name that appears in the task manager Process page that' associated with your game.

LauncherThatShouldNeverBeFound_OW.exe - Replace with the name of the launcher (sf2,exe for example).
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Valve\Steam\InstallPath - Change to the path that goes to your game in the registry. This is not the C:\.

If filled out correctly, that "might" give you proper support for your game. It also might not and could cause crashes. Do this at your own risk.

I don't like Overwolf, it lagged the hell out of me, and I don't like bundled software.

Try this.

Goblin Squad Member

I've been using Teamspeak while playing, but without Overwolf, and it does a fine job. Could you please tell me what Overwolf brings to the party?

Goblin Squad Member

It has recording services(they didn't impress me, I use Fraps) and facebook linkups, along with teamspeak integration and some other junk. They also have potential for custom plugins.

It's really useless to someone with 2 screens or the ability to alt-tab.

Goblin Squad Member

I've seen several folks looking for alternatives to alt-tabbing from PFO. I've had no trouble with that, but have others, then?

Scarab Sages Goblin Squad Member

Yes, alt-tab definitely gives some computers grief.

Goblin Squad Member

My personal solution to this problem is a Logitech G19 keyboard, with a little screen on it that can display the sort of info that Overwolf overlays.

Obviously not a viable solution for everyone, but I love it.

Goblin Squad Member

If PFO is running in windowed mode, you can mouse over to other windows with no problems and no alt-tab needed. It's just if you're running fullscreen that it starts to behave badly if it loses focus.

Goblin Squad Member

Ah, yes, thank you. I didn't mean to be unclear.

PFO installed itself, on my machine at least, to run windowed as default, so I still have access to all my other windows via the taskbar. I meant only that I was using Alt-Tab to switch among them, and that was indeed bound to cause confusion.

I knew folks were asking for solutions that didn't involve switching windows, and my question was really "why does one need to avoid switching windows?"

Any problems with it? I'm dissatisfied with my Razer Lycosa.

Not particularly. The logitech software that runs the backlighting, macros and screen's apps are suitably lightweight, and in terms of reliability it has been pretty good. My spacebar lost a lot of its tactile push recently (still works, but it doesn't rebound quite right), but I've owned it for 6+ years at this point so that seems fair.

One point to note though - it does need its own power socket. I /think/ it operates as a keyboard without it, but you will get zero fanciness without the power cable.

Most major chat programs ship with an applet that interfaces with the screen, though you usually need to dig through the options to turn it on. Not too many other options beyond stock, and most 3rd party stuff is built to be G15 compatible (black and white + smaller display space).
