Advice

Hey all

Does the silver spindle Ioun stone satisfy the need for "spontaneous arcane spells" to become a Dragon Diciple?

Hoping to find a way for full BAB human to become a DD...

A bloodrager can do it without any shenanigans. It is not entirely clear if you have to have the draconic bloodline, but this class does qualify easily.

Or if DD can even increase the bloodrager's bloodline level...

See, I'd really love to see a Crossblooded (Abyssal/Draconic) Bloodrager 4/Sorceror (Draconic)1/DD 8+ with Improved Eldritch Heritage (Abyssal).

Put on a cloak of arcane heritage and you've got +8 strength raging and +4 strength inherent and +4 strength from dragon disciple...and enough sorceror casting to get a +6 size bonus to strength and enough money for a +6 enhancement bonus to strength.

It's only +28, not enough to hit like a truck just yet.

Our group does not allow ACG, so I would still love an answer to my question...

It's not clear. As a GM I don't think I would allow it. At the very least you would be losing out on the spell casting increases without at least one level in an arcane spell casting class.

RAW yes it does (as long as you pick a spell from the wizard list), but i (personally) don't like this FAQ and i don't follow it for my home games.

No.

The requirement is that you have the ability to CAST 1st level arcane spells without preparation.

So - if the ioun stone had 5 skill ranks in Knowledge:arcana and knew how to speak Draconic, it could start leveling in Dragon Disciple, but you still couldn't.

Otherwise anyone with a Cha of 8+, a rank of UMD, & a wand of magic missile would qualify since they could occasionally roll a 20 on UMD.

Edit: Even if the item does count as you casting - spell-like abilities don't qualify (otherwise tiefling/aasimar would get in super easily) and the silver spindle ioun stone lets you use the spell "as a spell-like ability three times per day".

Actually based on FAQ, having SLA does allow you to count. But I'm unsure if SLA granted by an item should count, though I think they probably do.

I had thought that ruling was to allow you access to classes that just needed casting. But DD's prereqs are a bit more steep. I do not believe it works.

The faq says that creatures with spell like abilities are good to go, but the designteam may change thus if it turns broken...

Humans does not get sla , but the Ioun stone does grant sla.

So I guess I'll ask my gm if 24000 gp is a decent price to get access to DD. to the gold the is an extra price due tonot be able to use DD's spell progression...

All other prerequests are ofc. met...

It would really be better if you can take just one level of an spontaneous arcane spell casting class.

Is anything allowed from the advanced class guide? Or just the new classes forbidden?

If other things are allowed then there is a spontaneous magus archetype which would work. As a worse case scenario 1 level of sorcerer really isn't so bad to get access to everything else in Dragon Disciple if that is what you are set on.

Keep in mind a 24000 gp item wont likely be available to you until you're around 10th level or so. WBL for 10th level is 62000 gp, and this would represent about 40% of your wealth by level. You'll really be missing out if you horde all your wealth to acquire that single item. It's probably not feasible to have the item until around 12th or 13th level, and at that point your campaign is mostly over anyways (for most groups). You might get in two or three levels, but that would be it.

We use the rule that to limit computer need, and limit options we can only use books we own IRL . At the moment that's CRB, APG, UCombat, UM & UE.

If we want other books we need to buy them, and finances doesn't allow that for now...

We are lv. 14 now, and are above wbl.
