Shaman and their Spirit Animal

Rules Questions

I knwo that the Spirit Animal follows the rules of the Wizards familiar. However, I am uncertain about how much of the rules it follows.

Does the Spirit Animal give the Shaman the Alertness feat when close by?

Anyone?

I think not, the spirit animal is not in fact effectively a familiar but in fact an animal companion, it advances in strength according to the animal companion table, otherwise it is a normal animal of its species. Albeit a glowing one. The animal you pick comes from the Druid animal companion options, should it die or you release it, you can summon a new spirit animal

I think that TLaughingMan was talking about the ACG Shaman, while Dukeh555 was talking about the Open Design/Kobold Press Shaman (that's why I said that it would be confusing to have two classes with the same name) :) To answer the first question, I think yes. The ACG Shaman's spirit familiar (and the Houngan archetype's spirit familiar for the OD/KP Shaman) work like familiars in all respects.

Thanks
